  • Surface of PEEK(poly-ether-ether-ketone) was modified by chemical etching, plasma treatment and mechanical grinding to improve the plating adhesion. The plating characteristics of these samples were studied by the contact angle, plating thickness, gloss and adhesion. Chemical etching and plasma treatment increased wettability, adhesion and gloss. The contact angle of as-received PEEK was $61^{\circ}$. The contact angles of chemical etched, plasma treated or both were improved to the range of $15{\sim}33^{\circ}$. In the case of electroless plating, the thickest layer without blister was $1.6{\mu}m$. The adhesion strengths by chemical etching, plasma treatment or both chemical etching and plasma treatment were $75kgf/cm^2$, $102kgf/cm^2$, $113kgf/cm^2$, respectively, comparing to the $24kgf/cm^2$ of as-received. In the case of mechanically ground PEEKs, the adhesion strengths were higher than those unground, with the sacrifice of surface gloss. The gloss of untreated PEEK were greater than mechanically ground PEEKs. Plating thickness increased linearly with the plating times.

  • Monodisperse PMMA/HDDA polymer particles were coated via electroless Ni plating using sodium hypophosphite as a reducing agent in an acidic environment. In this study, the effects of 1) the pretreatment conditions, 2) the plating temperature, 3) the plating pH, and 4) the initial pH, control of plating bath on the variation of plating rate, surface state of plated particles and plating reproducibility were investigated. It was observed that every pretreatment steps, especially conditioning and acceleration step, were very important for obtaining uniform Ni plating and the plating rate was increased with the increase of plating temperature and pH. Moreover, the initial pH control of plating bath was critical for the plating reproducibility.

  • In this study, electroless plating of copper was performed on PET film by using the blend of supercritical $CO_2$ and plating solution. The optimum volumetric ratio of supercritical fluid and plating solution was found to be 1:9 and dispersion property was poor at $CO_2$ vol% langer than 10%. Electroless plating of copper was best at $25^{\circ}C$ and 15 MPa. Role of added supercritical $CO_2$ is not to increase solubility but to disperse and maintain Cu-particles as the 1st particles.

  • A miniaturized lab-scale Cu plating cell for the metallization of electronic devices was fabricated and its deposit uniformity and profile were investigated. The plating cell was composed of a polypropylene bath, an electrolyte ejection nozzle which is connected to a circulation pump. In deposit uniformity evaluation, thicker deposit was found on the bottom and sides of substrate, indicating the spatial variation of deposit thickness was governed by the tertiary current distribution which is related to $Cu^{2+}$ transport. The surface morphology of Cu deposit inside photo-resist pattern was controlled by organic additives in the electrolyte as it led to the flatter top surface compared to convex surface which was observed in the deposit grown without organic additives.

  • Four kinds of PET fabrics were coated with Copper and Nickel by electroless chemical plating, and the electromagnetic wave shielding effectiveness for those samples have been examined. The shielding effectiveness showed between 90 dB and 70 dB, and it related to the fabric structure, such as cover factor and cloth density. The dense fabric structure showed the better shielding effect.

  • Metal plated plastics are becoming more prevalent in materials of communication parts. A new technique MmSH is a process of injecting plastics to produce innovated physical properties compared to the conventional injection process. This study involves two ways of coating plastics Ni by electroless plating and varying bath and plasma treatment for improved adhesion strength between plating layer and surface. MmSH injection processed ASS with plasma treated after neutralization showed a superior adhesion force and a gloss and rate of deposition when it was in pH 7.5. On the other hand, conventional injection processed ASS was in pH 6.5.

  • In chemical plating of nickel and chromium on steel, studies on various factors affect-ing the plating operations were carried out. The optimum bath compositions and operat-ing conditions were obtained. The structure and properties of the as deposits or deposits after heat treatment were investigated. (1) The most optimum conditions for the chemical nickel and chromium plating were; 〔Ni2+〕/〔H2PO2-〕; 0.5∼0.8, 〔Cr3+〕/〔H2PO2-〕; 0.6∼0.9 PH;5.0∼5.5, temperature; 90∼95$^{\circ}C$ (2) In the case of nickel deposition, the hardness of deposits increased with increasing phosphorous contents. Heat-treating at the temperature range 200$^{\circ}C$ to 600$^{\circ}C$, the maximum hardness of deposits was obtained at 400$^{\circ}C$ and decreased at temperature above 400$^{\circ}C$ due to growth of Ni3P. (3) Corrosion resistance of chemical nickel deposits was improved with increasing of p-hosphorous contents and heat treating temperature.

  • In this work, we employed an electroless nickel plating on glass fibers in order to enhance the electric conductivity of fibers. And the effects of metal content and plating time on the conductivity of fibers were investigated. From the results, island-like metal clusters were found on the fiber surfaces in initial plating state, and perfect metallic layers were observed after 10 min of plating time. The thickness of metallic layers on fiber surfaces was proportion to plating time, and the electric conductivity showed similar trends. The nickel cluster sizes on fibers decreased with increasing plating time, indicating that surface energetics of the fibers could become more homogeneous and make well-packed metallic layers, resulting in the high conductivity of Ni/glass fibers.

  • Electroless plating process as a solution deposition method is a viable means of preparing conductive metal films on non-conducting substrates through chemical reactions. In the present study, the preparation and properties of electroless Ni-plating on flexible silicone rubber are described. The process has been performed using a conventional Ni(P) chemical bath. Additives and complexing agents such as ammonium chloride and glycine were added and the reaction pH was controlled by NaOH aqueous solution. Ni deposition rate and crystallinity have been found to vary with pH and temperature of the plating bath. It was shown that Ni-films having the high crystallinity, enhanced adhesion and optimum electric conductivity were formed uniformly on silicone rubber substrates under pH 7 at $70^{\circ}C$. The conductive Ni-plated silicone rubber showed a high electromagnetic interference shielding effect in the 400 MHz-1 GHz range.
