Cr2O3-MgO-Y2O3 첨가에 따른 뮬라이트 세라믹스의 기계적 성질 (Effect of Cr2O3-MgO-Y2O3 Addition on Mechanical Properties of Mullite Ceramics)

  • Mullite ($3Al_2O_3{\cdot}2SiO_2$) has emerged as a promising candidate for high-temperature structural materials due to its erosion resistance, chemical and thermal stabilities, relatively low thermal expansion coefficient, excellent thermal shock and creep resistances, and low dielectric constant. However, since the pure mullite sintering temperature is as high as $1,600{\sim}1,700^{\circ}C$, there is an increasing need for a sintering additive capable of improving the strength characteristics while lowering the sintering temperature. Herein we have tried to obtain the optimal sintering additive composition by adding MgO, $Cr_2O_3$, and $Y_2O_3$ to mullite, followed by sintering at $1,325{\sim}1,550^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. With additives of 2 wt% of MgO, 2 wt% of $Cr_2O_3$, 4 wt% of $Y_2O_3$, A density of $3.23g/cm^3$ was obtained for the sintered body at $1,350^{\circ}C$ upon using 2 wt% MgO, 2 wt% $Cr_2O_3$, and 4 wt% $Y_2O_3$ as additives. The three-point flexural strength of that was 275 MPa and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) was $4.15ppm/^{\circ}C$.

골프장 연못의 생태적 관리를 위한 환경특성 분석 (Analyses of the Environmental Characteristics of Ponds in Golf Courses for Ecological Management)

  • Pond management is a critical part of overall golf course management, both during growth and maintenance modes of turf care. This study investigated 48 ponds in nine 18- or 27-hole golf courses to analyze the environmental characteristics of ponds. The research process had three phases: (1) inventory and analysis of grading plans and drainage plans, (2) field verification and interviews with greenskeepers, and (3) analyses of water quality and statistics. All data were collected from May to August in 2004. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: 1. It is desirable to site a golf course in a small watershed with high watershed eccentricity to control storm water runoff efficiently and to minimize soil erosion during construction. 2. The siting and size of a pond should be determined through a land-use analysis of the watershed for the purpose of ecological management. The bigger the forest-to-golf course ratio, the better the water quality will be. 3. The size and capacity of each individual ponds varied and there were many somewhat longish rather than round ponds. 4. There were many differences among golf courses in naturalness of the ponds, and the correlation between naturalness and area of aquatic plants was very high. 5. Analyses of pond water quality indicated that the degrees of Dissolved Oxygen, Chemical Oxygen Demanded and Suspended Solids were relatively low values but Total Phosphorus and Total Nitrogen were too high. Therefore a systematic approach is needed to solve e problem. Pesticide residues were not detected in all ponds. 6. Water depth and area of hydrophyte should be considered when designing an ecological pond. 7. All ponds used storm water as a main source of water supply and added underground water. Aquatic plants and physical methods such as water aeration and spray fountains were the main choices for maintaining a healthy aquatic environment.

Effects of Road Constructions on Soil Drainage from Paddy Fields

  • Bad drainage problems from paddy fields adjacent to roads are caused by higher constructed roads which change topography of paddy fields to concave topography and artificial pan to prevent road erosion when road constructions are occurred. This study investigated effects of topography changes on soils by road constructions. Soil samples were investigated by physico-chemical analyses and micromorphology analyses from representative soil profile of Sachon series and soil samples. The characteristics of Sachon series that were adjacent to roads were fewer redoximorphic features (RMF) and increase in grey layers than the original Sachon series. The characteristics of Yecheon Series were shown from Jeollanamdo - Suncheon > Chungchungnamdo - Cheonan > Gangwondo - Wonju. Mosaic speckles were shown from micromorphological analyses because of repeat of shrink and expansion by wetting and drying. The location of graying in soil clods were found from coarse stone blocks to fine stone blocks and color changes of composed particles were also found.

Biological Affinity and Biodegradability of Poly(propylene carbonate) Prepared from Copolymerization of Carbon Dioxide with Propylene Oxide

  • In this study we investigated bacterial and cell adhesion to poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) films, that had been synthesized by the copolymerization of carbon dioxide (a global warming chemical) with propylene oxide. We also assessed the biocompatibility and biodegradability of the films in vivo, and their oxidative degradation in vitro. The bacteria adhered to the smooth, hydrophobic PPC surface after 4 h incubation. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecalis had the highest levels of adhesion, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus had the lowest levels, and Staphylococcus epidermidis was intermediate. In contrast, there was no adhesion of human cells (cell line HEp-2) to the PPC films, due to the hydrophobicity and dimensional instability of the surface. On the other hand, the PPC films exhibited good biocompatibility in the mouse subcutaneous environment. Moreover, contrary to expectation the PPC films degraded in the mouse subcutaneous environment. This is the first experimental confirmation that PPC can undergo surface erosion biodegradation in vivo. The observed biodegradability of PPC may have resulted from enzymatic hydrolysis and oxidative degradation processes. In contrast, the PPC films showed resistance to oxidative degradation in vitro. Overall, PPC revealed high affinity to bioorganisms and also good bio-degradability.

  • The occurrence and pattern of tooth wear are related to cultural, dietary, occupational, and geographic factors, Excessive occlusal wear can result in pulpal exposure, occlusal disharmony, functional inability. Surface loss can be differentiated into 3 general causal categories: i) mechanical loss, which includes attrition, ii) abrasion chemical loss including erosion, and finally iii) a proposed biomechanical category described as abfraction. Considering that mechanical wear is frequently asymptomatic, patients may have parafunctional habit. Structured clinical decision analysis in fixed prosthodontics, as other branches of dentistry do, allows the practitioner to consider the patient's problems more thoroughly based on the clinical data and extenuation factors. This discipline of decision making is intended to complement the experience level and educational background of the clinician in assisting the patient through the decision process. Additionally, CDA helps the clinician define not only the pre-existing condition of the patient prior to irreversible therapy, but also better treatment strategies for the patient over an extended period. The systematic nature of decision analysis stimulates the dentists to pay further attention to those factors, which is germane to the overall complexity of the case, and exclude factors, which have little influence on its final outcome. Further implementation of computerized databases, procedural outcome probabilities based on clinical and laboratory studies and the clinical experience of those who use it, may provide quite a promising future in the field of structured and formalized clinical decision analysis.

Soil Mineral Nitrogen Upteke and Com Growth from Hairy Vetch with Conventional and No-Tillage Systems

  • Winter hairy vetch (HV) can be used as green manure with conventional tillage system (CT), in which chemical N fertilizer required for cultivation of sub-sequent com could be fully saved, or as cover crop with no-tillage system (NT) in which soil could be protected from erosion, control of weed, and the reduction of N fertilizer application. This experiment was carried out to compare the enrichment of soil mineral nitrogen (SMN) at corn root zone, and the changes of com growth and N uptake according to HV amounts (winter fallow, above-ground HV removed, intact HV, and HV added from aboveground HV removed) under two tillage systems in the upland field of National Crop Experiment Station, Suwon, Korea in 1996. HV cultivation during winter decreased SMN a little at com planting. HV incorporation with CT increased SMN rapidly during early growth stage according to rapid decomposition of Hv. SMN by HV cover with NT was increased slowly and its increase was higher in the surface soil (soil layer 0-7.5cm) compared to deep soil layer 7.5-22cm. Com growth and N status at corn silking stage, com yield and N uptake at harvest were increased in proportion to aboveground HV amounts regardless of tillage system. Average hairy vetch nitrogen (HV-N) uptake efficiency by com was 10% higher with CT than with NT in which average HV-N uptake efficiency was 43 %. Corn yields were not different between two tillage systems, but corn N uptake was increased by 33 kgN/ha more with CT than with NT due to the increase of corn N concentration. The increase of SMN and com N uptake from HV cover with NT could not be disregarded though those with CT were higher than with NT

  • ADSS(All Dielectirc Self-Supporting) cable installed under high voltage power cable line suffers a variety of environmental influence, rain, wind, snow fall, chemical pollution, salt fog and electrical stress. Its lifetime is required to be at least 20 years with this harsh weathering condition. The electrical stress under high voltage power line gives rise to dry band arcing and tracking, the severest damage, on the outer sheath of cable. Finally tracking might penetrate sheath and cause the break-down of ADSS cable. Tracking resistant sheath material, therefore, should be used to protect the core of ADSS from dry band arcing and to be sure long lifetime. In this work, we discuss various commercial tracking resistant material to investigate the way of track resistance and compare their mechanical, electrical, weathering and tracking properties through serial experiments. We found track resistant material is categorized into two main type : polyethylene with metal hydroxide and polyethylene with reduced carbon black. The Liquid contaminant, Inclined plane Tracking and Erosion test says the time to track of tracking resistant material with metal hydroxide has a little longer time to track in the high applied voltage than that with carbon black, but mechanical and weathering properties were inferior to.

인간간섭에 따른 변산반도 사빈해안의 지형변화 (The Geomorphic Changes of Sand-Beach Coasts by Human Impact in Byeonsan Peninsula, Southwest Korea)

  • 변산반도 사빈은 포켓비치로서 지형발달 양상에 따라 만입형 사주성 사빈해안과 파식대성 사빈해안으로 분류된다. 두 유형 모두에서 후빙기 해진 극상기에 퇴적되었던 실트 및 점토층이 만입지 내부 표고 약 10m에서 발견되거나 배후구릉에 풍적토가 형성될 만큼 과거에 모래공급이 활발하였다. 이후 자연 상태에서 결핍성 물질수지현상이 일어났으며 최근 새만금방조제 건설로 인해 인근 변산, 고사포 사빈의 인위적인 지형변화가 가속화되고 있다. 이 일대 사빈은 조류유속이 감소되면서 상대적으로 퇴적이 우세해지고 지표 노출 시간이 길어지면서 화학적 풍화도가 높아졌다. 변산 사빈은 동진강을 따라 공급된 세립사가 줄면서 상대적으로 조립화가 우세해지고 사빈침식으로 인해 평행개석곡이 발달하였다. 고사포 사빈은 가력 배수갑문을 통해 부유성 세립사가 늘면서 세립화 경향으로 변모되었다.

Screen of Green Manure Crops for Cultivation on Agricultural Land with Spring Season in the Central Regions of Korea

  • The green manure crops are returned to soil when the plants are still green. The green manure crops play a role in reducing chemical fertilizers, improvement of soil fertility, reduction of soil erosion, weed control, and landscapes effect. Typical green manure crops are barley green manure, hairy vetch, chines milk vetch and clovers. We sowed 49 species of green manure crops in upland soil to increase the usage of green manure crops. We searched the effectiveness of green manure yield, C/N ratio, soil mulching, and landscape effect. The green manure crops that have $5tonha^{-1}$ or more of green manure yield (fresh weight) were 6 gramineous crops, 4 leguminous crops, and 3 others. Green manures yield in a short growth period was higher in gramineous crops than leguminous crops. Among the green manure crops, 3 gramineous crops, 12 leguminous crops, and 3 others were under 25 in C/N ratio. Seven gramineous crops, 8 leguminous crops, and 5 others were over 50% of soil covering rate. Green manure crops that have beautiful flowers were in total 16 kinds, such as 4 gramineous crops, 6 leguminous crops, and 6 others. In result, based on green manure yield and C/N ratio, excellent species in the green manure crops were 4 species (triticale, 2 kinds of hairy vetch, and lupin). Green manure crops that were effective at soil mulching were 20 species, like hairy vetch, oats, sorghum, phacelia, buckwheat, etc. Buckwheat, crotalaria, mustard plant, phacelia, and etc. could be available for landscape crops.

하와이 화산회(火山灰)로부터 발달한 Inceptisols과 Aridsol 토양(土壤)의 표면전하(表面電荷) 특성(特性)에 관(關)하여 (Studies on the Surface Charge Characteristics of Two Inceptisols and One Aridsol in Hawaii)

  • 동일한 화산회로부터 발달한 세개의 하와이 토양을 사용하여 중요한 토양 물리화학적 성질을 결정하는 인자인 토양표면전하 (soil surface charge)의 특성에 대한 조사를 수행하였다. 높은 강우량(년 3050mm 이상)하에서 발달한 두 Typic Hydrandepts 토양은 pH 변화에 따른 음 양 전하의 발달이 대단히 컸으며 등전점은 각각 Akaka 토양이 5.0-5.5 사이, Hilo 토양이 6.5-7.0 사이에 있었다. 한편 낮은 강우량(년 500mm 이하)하에서 발달한 Ustolic Camorthid 토양은 pH 변화에 따른 음 양전하의 발달이 위 두 토양에 비하여 훨씬 낮았으며, 등전점 역시 4.5-5.0 사이로서 낮았다. 따라서 자연조건에서 Kawaihae 토양만이 -(음)의 ${\Delta}pH$를 나타내고 Akaka와 Hilo 토양은 +(양) 내지 0 근처의 ${\Delta}pH$ 값을 보여 주고 있다. X-ray 회절분석에 의하여 Typic Hydrandepts 토양의 주광물은 무정형 광물 (60 % 이상)이었고, Ustollic Camorthid 토양중의 주광물은 dehydrated halloysite(1:1 점토광물) (45-50 %)이었음이 밝혀졌다. 이같은 동일한 화산회에서부터 발달한 토양의 현저한 광물학적 차이는 토양발달과정중의 강우량 차이에서 기인한 것으로 추정된마, 세토양중의 점토함량은 최저 42% (Akaka 토양)와 최고 57% (Hilo 토양)로 그 차이가 크지 않았으나 이들 토양의 표면적 ($m^2/g$)은 289 (Akaka 토양), 268 (Hilo 토양) 그리고 93 (Kawaihae 토양)으로서 특별히 Kawaihae 토양이 현저히 낮았다. 이같은 토양간의 표면적과 전하적 특성의 현저한 차이는 토양중의 광물학적 차이에서 오는 것이며 1:1 광물이 주를 이루는 우리나라 대부분의 토양은 본 연구 중의 Kawaihae 토양과 유사한 특성을, 그리고 우리나라 제주도 화산회토의 일부는 Akaka나 Hilo 토양의 특성을 따를 것으로 예상되는 바이다.
