Septicemic polyserositis and navel ill associated with Escherichia coli were reported in a 14-day-old male thoroughbred foal. The horse died after showing 12-day history of anorexia, lethargy, lameness and endophthalmus. Grossly, milky yellow abscesses were occupied in umbilicus, umbilical vein and artery. Large amounts of turbid pale yellow fluids were seen in pericardial sac, thoracic and abdominal cavity. Yellowish fibrinous materials were also presented in thoracic and abdominal cavity. Sticky pale yellow fluid and fibrinous materials were filled in stifle joint cavities of both hind limbs. Histologically, fibrino-purulent polyserositis and arthritis were observed. Severe omphalophlebitis with intra-lesional Gram negative bacterial colonies were noted in umbilical vein. Most of mesothelial cells in serosal cavities were severely hypertrophied. Pathogenic E. coli was purely isolated from ascites, thoracic and synovial fluids. Based on the results, the septicemic polyserositis may be originated from the umbilical cord infected with E. coli in this foal.
This work describes an outbreak of strangles due to Streptococcus equi subsp. equi in 1 to 2 years old Thoroughbred horses. A total of 7 samples were collected from 5 horses in two different horse farms during 2003. Six ${\beta}$-hemolytic colonies selected from each sample were identified by biochemical tests using API STREPTO followed by PCR amplification which is able to recognize unique region of SeM gene of S. equi subsp. equi. All colonies selected from the ruptured lymphadenitis of 2 horses in farm A were identified as S. dysgalactiae subsp. equisimillis. It seems to be secondary infection because the sampling sites have been already opened and the horses have been treated with antibiotics for a week. All colonies from 2 submandibular lymphadenitis samples in Farm B were S. equi subsp. equi while the isolates from 3 nasal discharges in this farm were mixed with S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus.
A 5-week old Thoroughbred foal was presented with severe left carpal valgus. Radiographs of the dorsopalmar projections confirmed the deviation was 14 degrees. Surgery using a single-position screw traversing the physis of the distal radius was performed. The limb was almost straight (2 degrees) 3 weeks after surgery. Visual/radiograph follow-up 7 months after screw removal revealed no over-correction after removal of the screw. Transphyseal bridging using a single-position screw without lateral periosteal transection of distal radius was successful for the correction of foals with this condition.
The phylogenetic relationships between Cheju native horses and Tsushima native horses were studied by protein polymorphism analyses in 16 gene loci (Trypsin inhibitor: Ti, Chymotrypsin inhibitor: CTi, Albumin: Al, Esterase: Es, Transferrin: Tf, Hemoglobin: Hb, Catalase: Cat, Esterase D: EsD, Glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase: GOT, Glyoxalase I: GLO I, Acid phosphatase: AcP, Superoxide dismutase: SOD, Lactate dehydrogenase: LDH, Hexokinase: HK, Malate dehydrogenase: MDH, Malic enzyme: ME). All allelic patterns of the protein loci, except 5 loci (SOD, LDH, HK, MDH, ME), were polymorphic in both two populations. Gene frequencies of the polymorphic loci of the population of Cheju native horses were higher than those of Tsushima native horses. Average heterozygosity in Cheju native horses was 0.375, showing higher than that of Tsushima native horses (0.304). The Da distance and gene identity of two populations were 0.108 and 0.868, respectively. The phylogenetic tree constructed by these results and those previously reported in other horse populations, consisted of three clusters. From this phylogenetic tree, it could be suggested that Cheju native horses and Tsushima native horses had diverged from the Mongolian wild horse (Equus prsewolskii).
The animal bone-remains excavated with earthwares at Cheju Kimnyungri cave site were investigated morphologically and osteometrically. The number of bone remains were 1706 pieces by morphological criteria. Based on the classification of bony pieces excavated in the cave site, the important animal species in Cheju island during the early Tamra period (presumably between A.D.0 - A.D. 500) was as follows; wild boar(75%), deer(17%), cattle(6%), and horse in small percentage. The excavated bone remains imply that the major fauna of animal species are composed of three species, including Sus scrofa, Cervus nippon and Bos taurus. These data suggests that the archaeological remains such as bone pieces are good indicators of the fauna animals, and of zoological entity in the island.
The classification of bony pieces which were excavated from Jongdali archaeological site in Jeju was studied. The total number of bone remains were 81 pieces, in which 31 pieces were classified into animal bones. The animal species consisted of Cervus spp., Sus scrofa, Bos taurus and Equus caballus. This finding suggests that the major fauna in this peroid(B.C. 100 - A.D. 100) is wild boar, deer, horse and cattle.
Enzyme-linked Immuno sorbent Assay (ELISA) for the serological diagnosis of Brucella abortus was developed and compared with plate agglutination test. Cell wall antigen was extracted from Brucella abortus 1119-3 by sonication and with a sodium deoxychlate solution. Optimum protein concentration of coating antigen were $0.4{\mu}g/100{\mu}{\ell}$ protein on each microtiter plate well. Horse radish peroxidase (HRP) labeled protein-G was used as a tracer of reacted antibodies. ELISA confirmed the agreeable results of 40 cases out of 43 cases by plate aggulutination test. ELISA diagnosed positive cases(10 out of 12) and negative cases (1 out of 12) with dubious sera by plate agglutination test. From this results ELISA could be used for the early diagnostic tools of Brucellosis in cattle.

This study aimed to investigate whether breed, sex, and age affected temperament differently (more or less neophobic) in mature horses during a novel object test. The study included Jeju crossbred (n = 12, age = 9.42 ± 4.57 y), Thoroughbred (n = 15, age = 10.73 ± 3.09 y), and Warmblood horses (n = 12, age = 13.08 ± 3.55 y) with the females (n = 22, age = 11.36 ± 4.24 y) and geldings (n = 17, age = 10.65 ± 3.66 y). Jeju crossbreds (Jeju horse × Thoroughbred) are valuable considering their popular usage in Korea, but limited studies have explored temperament of Jeju crossbred horses. A trained experimenter touched the left side of the neck with a white plastic bag (novel object). The test ended when the horse stopped escape response and heart rate (HR) dropped to baseline. Behavioral score and escape duration were measured as behavioral variables. Multiple variables related to HR and heart rate variability (HRV) were measured to reflect emotional state. These included basal HR (BHR), maximum HR (MHR), delay to reach maximum heart rate (Time to MHR), standard deviation of beat-to-beat intervals (SDNN), root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), and ratio of low to high frequency components of a continuous series of heartbeats (LF/HF). Statistics revealed that Thoroughbreds had significantly higher behavioral scores, and lower RMSSD than Jeju crossbreds (p < 0.05), suggesting greater excitement and fear to the novel object in Thoroughbreds. None of the behavioral or cardiac parameters exhibited sex differences (p < 0.05). Age was negatively correlated with SDNN and RMSSD (p < 0.05), indicating that older horses felt more anxiety to the novelty than younger horses. Thoroughbreds and females had distinct correlations between behavioral and HRV variables in comparison with other groups (p < 0.05), implying that escape duration might be a good indicator of stress, especially in these two groups. These results are expected to improve equine welfare, safety and utility, by providing insights into the temperament of particular horse groups, to better match reactivity levels with specific functions.
