  • Because of the trend of deregulation, power industry is going through an unprecedented transformation in North America and Europe, and there are a host of acquisitions and mergers by the private sector to position themselves to take advantage of new business opportunities. Deregulation has accelerated the development of smaller generators and fuel cells will gradually become more attractive to mainstream electricity users as they improve in capability and decrease in cost. Fuel Cell technology is surveyed and the potential of using fuel cell as a distributed generation source is presented. This paper recommends the fuel cell power plants as alternative energy sources for distributed generation in Jeju Island, Korea. This will help in increasing fuel efficiency, at least double the current thermal plants', increasing the reliability of power supply, reducing the dependency on the HVDC link, providing quality power to the growing infrastructure, and maintaining clean air in meeting the free-trade international island.

  • An aquaculture system for feeding the caged fishes in the open water is suggested for ocean application. Survival and operation conditions are defined at the conceptual design. Wave and current drag forces are discussed to determine the proper dimension of the aquaculture system and the related mooring system. Second order wave drift force at the survival condition is the dominant force, which be reduced by minimizing the superstructure open to the surface. Automation in feeding, sorting, cleaning is introduced to use the ongoing technology for quality product. The suggested system has advantage compared to onshore culturing, but not to shallow water culturing system. There is room for real application in future by the countries, such as Korea and Japan, which are in short of fish supply and have willingness to venture towards the ocean aquaculture.

  • The estimated total material transports through the Cheju Strait using all data which investigated in 1997 and 1999 are as follows; A large amount of suspended sediments and dissovted inorganic nutrients are carried tothe South Sea through the Cheju Strait by a persistent eastward flow (Cheju Current) from the Y311ow Sea andthe East China Sea. The annual material Oanspous by the Cheju Current are as follows; 22.9${\times}$10$^6$ ton yr$^{-1}$(SS), 0.52${\times}$10$^{10}$ mol yr$^{-1}$ (NH$_4\;^+$), 6.05${\times}$10$^{10}$ mol yr$^{-1}$ (NO$_3\;^-$), 0.36${\times}$10$^{10}$ mol yr$^{-1}$ (PO$_4\;^{3-}$), 10.27${\times}$10$^{10}$ mol yr$^{-1}$ (Si(OH)$_4$). The annual suspended sediment flux per water transport in the Cheju Strait (44.48${\times}$10$^6$ ton yr$^{-1}$ Sv$^{-1}$) is about 1.7 larger than that in the Korean Strait (26.08${\times}$10$^6$ ton yr$^{-1}$ Sv$^{-1}$). The annual nitrate flux per water transport (11.60${\times}$10$^{10}$ mol yr$^{-1}$ Sv$^{-1}$) is about 1.2 larger than that in the Korean Strait (9.72${\times}$10$^{10}$ mol yr$^{-1}$ Sv$^{-1}$) and 2/3 of that by Kuroshio in the East China Sea (18.55${\times}$10$^{10}$ ton yr$^{-1}$ Sv$^{-1}$). It suggests that chemical rich Cheju Current will play a significant role in the biogeochemical processes in the South Sea where the huge land-based waste are introduced.

  • The physical and chemical characteristics were examined in the southern sea of Korea including the Cheju Strait, and the entrance of the Korea Strait in the period of May 30 to June 8, 1995. The results are as follows. Firstly, the variation ranges of the temperature and salinity at the Cheju Stratit during 24 hours observation were larger in the surface layer than that in the deep layers. Secondly, daily variations of nutrients show that total inorganic nitrogen, phosphate phosphorous, and silicate silicon concentration are higher at night than at day. Thirdly, water temperature and salinity distributions show highest values at the entrance of Korea Strait, which is thought to be influenced directly by Tsushima Warm Current, while they show the lowest values in Cheju Strait. This means that the surface waters in Korea Strait are greatly influenced from the entrance of Korea Strait and bottom waters is greatly influenced from Cheju Strait. Fourthly, nutrients distribution shows highest values in Korea Strait but dissolved oxygen shows lowest values in the area. These seem to be caused by the oxygen consumption used in the inorganization of nutrients to decompose organisms and the liquidation of nutrients.

  • The circulations and movement of suspended materials by tidal residual current and seasonal surface wind in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea are investigated by using a 2-dimensional barotropic model and a particle tracing technique. The tidal residual current is relatively strong around the south and west coast of Korea including the Cheju Island and southern coast of China. The current has a maximum speed of 10 cm/s in the vicinity of Cheju Island with a clockwise circulation. General tendency of the current, however, is to flow eastward along the southern coast of Korea. At the east coast of China from Shanghai to Tunghai, it also shows a eastward flow toward the South Sea of Korea. The anticyclonic circulation formed by wind-driven current and southward current prevails along the coast of Korea in the winter season(from October to April) when northerly wind is dominant. In summer(represented by July), however, the cyclonic circulation appears due to the influence of southerly wind. Suspended materials are advected by tidal residual current and wind-driven current. The long period(ten days) displacement by wind-driven current is bigger than that by tidal residual current. However, the tidal residual current would have the more important role for the advection of the suspended material considering longer period more than several months.

  • SST (Sea Surface. Temperature) fronts which were found in the South-West Sea of Korea and the northern area of the East China Sea were examined in order to clarify their positions, shapes, seasonal changes and the formation mechanism, For this study used SST data rearranged from the SST IR image during 1991 to 1996 and oceanographical data obtained by National Fisheries Research and Development Institute. Temperature front in the Cheju Strait was analyzed by the data obtained from a fisheries guidance ship of Cheju Provincial Government, The coastal frontal zone in the South-West Sea of Korea and the offshore frontal zone in the northern area of the East China Sea can be divided into several types (Type of Winter, Summer, Spring, Autumn and late Autumn), Short term variations of SST fronts have a tendency not to move to any Bleat extent for several days. The location of the frontal zone in the southwestern sea of Cheju Island changes on a much large scale than that of the one in the southern coast of Korea, The frontal Tone, formed every year in the southern sea of Korea approaches closer to the coastal area in winter, and moves closer to the south in spring and autumn. The frontal zone of the southwestern sea of Cheju Island moves in a westerly direction from the east, and reaches its most westerly point in the winter and its most easterly point in the summer related to the seasonal change of the Tsushima Current. Additionally, the frontal zone of the southwestern sea of Korea becomes extremely weak in March, April and November. SST fronts are formed every year around the line connecting Cheju Island to Yeoseo Island or to Chungsan Island in the Cheju Strait. A Ring-shaped tidal mixing front appears along the coastal area of Cheju Island throughout the year except during the months from November to January. Especially, in May and October fronts are formed between the coastal waters of Cheju Island and the Tsushima currents connecting the frontal zone of the coastal region in the southern sea of Korea with that of the southwestern sea of Cheju Island.

  • A recording current meter was deployed in the shallow western part of Deukryang Bay from 1 July to 7 August 1992 during which the wind was weak. Principal component in NNE-SSW direction parallel to the axis of the bay had $98.7\%$ of the total variance and the orthogonal component of only $1.3\%$. Spectral analysis of the principal component revealed that the semidiurnal component comprised about $91.2\%$ of total energy. Whereas the diurnal and longer components were less than $2.5\%$ the shallow water tide was about $6.3\%$ . Weak mean current of 0,8cm/sec in SSE direction implies that the slow circulation in the bay is counterclockwise having the northward net flow in the deep eastern part.

  • The transient voltage characteristics of capacitor self-exited induction generator are analyzed by the state equation which is obtained from the d-q axis equivalent circuit of stationary reference frame and torque equation. The d-q equivalent circuit is composed using the condition of stationary reference frame. The mutual inductance is only considered as a function of magnetizing current in the equivalent circuit. The characteristics are analyzed and discussed by the backward Euler method for various load conditions under specified initial conditions and input.

  • This paper presents the determination of synchronous compensator(S.C) rating and parameter in Cheju AC network. The role of S.C is to supply Inertia and reactive power to HVDC system which is a kind of a generator without the function of reactive power control and Inertia. Therefore, the parameters of S,C have to be determined by considering HVDC operating characteristics. The background of this paper is the determination of S.C parameters in Cheju AC network in the case of replacing current operating S,C to new S.C type.

  • Current landscape management is focused towards managing uniformly, such as setting a limit on building's height and managing by putting first priority on building. For this reason, broader impact of landscape has not been studies thoroughly, and it was considered to be an important factor of not being able to operate diverse and active landscape management. Accordingly, the objective of this particular research to establish concrete and diverse device for managing landscape by adapting Map Algebra and Spatial Statistics, as one of the means of efficient landscape management, and applying the effectiveness of each landscape element in numerical value. Furthermore, this research was done in order to make a spatial estimation possible for resources to be located in compliance with each facility or landscape condition of individual region.
