The rainwater samples were collected from the 1100 Site of Mt. Halla and Cheju city during the period of March in 1997 to August in 1998, and the major soluble ions were analyzed. The confidence of analytical data was confirmed by using the comparison methods such as ino-balance, electric conductivity and acid fraction, all of which correlation coefficients were above 0.94. The ionic strengths lower than $10^{-4}$ M, the basis for the pure rainwater, were found in 47% and 38% at 1100 Site and Cheju city, respectively. The precipitations in Cheju city were more influenced by the oceanic effect than those in 1100 Site. The acidity contribution was mainly by $SO_4^{2-}$ and $NO_3^-$ in both areas, and the organic acids have contributed to the acidity with only 5~7%. The neutralization factors by $NH_3$ were about 46% at both 1100 site and Cheju city, whereas those by $CaCO_3$ were 11% and 15% at 1100 site and Cheju city respectively, and the free acidity were both about 35% in average. From the MSA analysis, it was found that the air in Cheju island has been influenced by the pollution from the other areas. The sources of the rainwater components in 1100 Site and Cheju city were also studied with a factor analyzing way, and the most probable factors were found to be anthropotgenic, oceanic, and soil-sourced. The results of multiple regression analysis have shown that $SO_4^{2-}$ was dissolved mostly in the form of $H_2SO_4, CaSO_4 and (NH_4)_2SO_4$, and $NO_3^-$ was in the form of $HNO_3, Ca(NO_3)_2 and NH_4NO_3$.

Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) is the causal agent of one of the most important diseases of citrus. Recently, CTV has been detected in Cheju Island by ELISA. The coat protein (CP) gene of CTV isolated form Cheju Island was cloned by RT-PCR and the nucleotide was analyzed in this study. Citrus leaves were collected from trees showing decline symptoms from various region of Cheju Island in the summer of 1998 and 1999. The CP gene open reading frame is composed of 670 nucleotides and encodes a polypeptide of 223 amono acids. Sequence analysis the CP gene revealed that two CTV strains present in Cheju Island. Viruses collected form Sogwipo area and Cheju City area in 1999 ahowed 91-93% nucleotide sequence homology with CTV T36 strain. Viruses collected form Cheju City area in 1999 and Sogwipo City in 1998 showed 94-98% nucleotide sequence homology with CTV SY568 strain. A efficient viral RNA extraction methods was developed by modifying procedure for animal virus RNA purification methods and PCR product was detected form one tenth of RNA purified from as small as 45 mg fresh or frozen tissue.
Aerosol measurement were carried out to investigate the characteristics of its chemical composition directly affected by the local emissions of Jeju City, Jeju Island by using an eight-stage cascade impactor from Dec. 1999 to Aug. 2000. The ambient aerosol concentrations measured at Jeju City were generally very low but the fine particle concentrations were to be higher than the US standard of PM2.5. The majority of sulfate were non sea salt and contained in the fine particles. In the fine particles, the concentrations of Na$\^$+/, K$\^$+/, Mg$\^$2+/, Ca$\^$2+/, Cl$\^$-/ and NO$\sub$3$\^$-/ had a tendency to increase during the springtime rather than the other seasons. However, the springtime sulfate and ammonium concentrations in the fine particles were slightly lower than those during the other seasons. On the other hand, associated with the coarse particles, the concentrations of ionic species except potassium and ammonium were elevated during the springtime. The calcium concentrations in the coarse particles were increased up to 8 times relative to the other seasons.
The findings of a study on reproductive disorders and their causes with 685 dairty cows raised on dairy farms located in Cheju city, Jochun, Hallim and Sung-up are summarized as follows; 1. Among a total 685 dairy cows, 149 heads were identified as having reproductive disorders. They were subdivided into 26 genital organ diseases (3.8%), 53 delivery abnormalities (7.7%), 17 stagnation of after-birth (2.5%), 23 long period nonestrus (3.4%) and 30 repeat breeders (4.4%). Also, the regional incidence of those disorders was recorded as high as 30.8-31.5% in Jochun and Cheju city, and as low as 12.6-16.6% in Sung-up and Hallim districts. 2. The regional incidence of delivery abnormalities was estimated as high as 10.7% in the Cheju city area, and gradually reduced to 8.8% in Jochun, 6.8% in Sung-up and 6.2% in the Hallim district. Abortion (3.1%), stillbirth (2.0%) and 욘새챰 (2.6%) were included in the delivery abnormalities.
Ozone measurements made from 4 sites in Jeju Island have been analyzed, including those from two urban and two rural locales. The data were analyzed in terms of the seasonal and diurnal trends. It should be clear that the surface ozone levels in Jeju area would be relatively sensitive to the external ozone supply originated from the region of Northeast Asia. It seems to be that due to the reactions of ozone with $NO_{x}$ and CO, the average ozone level in Jeju City appears lower than that in Seogwipo City although Jeju City is the largest city in Jeju Island.
This study was undertaken to evaluate the present status of parasitic infection and swine pen human latrine system in Cheju Do, from July to September 1982. The 663 stool specimens (male 323 and female 340) and 579 scotch tape anal swabs collected from 161 households of 2 areas in Cheju Do were examined. The methods employed were formalin-ether technique for the prevalence rate of various helminthic and protozoan infection, and scotch tape anal swab technique for the prevalence rates of Enterobius vermicularis. In addition to these, questionaire was used to evaluate the present status of swine pen human latrine system and prevalence rates of taeniasis in these areas. The results are as follows ; 1) Prevalence rates of parasitic infections of any kind was 33.9%. It was 35.7% in Cheju City in contrast to 32.1% in North Cheju Gun. The infection rates of Trichuris trichiura was 10.0% and it was the highest prevalence rate in this survey. The prevalence rates of the other parasites were as follows ; Ascaris lumbricoides 2,3%, Hookworm 0.2%, Clonorchis sinensis 0.5%, Hymenolepis nana 1.5%, Entamoeba coli 3.2%, and Giardia lamblia 0.5%. 2) The infection rates of Enterobius vermicularis in 579 peoples (male 285, female 294) by applying scotch tape anal swab technique was 13.1% through the survey. It was 16.9 in Cheju City and 8.5% in North Cheju Gun. 3) The Infection rate of Taenia species by applying the stool examination and making up a question was 19.2%(21.4% in Cheju City and 16.7% in North Cheju Gun). 4) Sexual distribution of the parasitic infections showed slightly higher rate in female than that of male. 5) The positive rates of parasitic infection by the stool examination and questionaire positive cases of taeniasis were higher in 0-9 and over 60 year old than any other age group. 7) The swine pen human latrine systems were used in 46 households (28.6%). 7) Relationship between swine pen human latrine system and taeniasis was not noted.
This study was conducted to determine the optimum time and the insemination site of frozen in Cheju native cows, and 660 cows first service inseminated with rectovaginal methods by 3 skillful technicians as 3 districts near Cheju City and Sogwipo City areas obtained the following results. Optimum time for insemination was 16-20 hours after the onset of estrus and 80.6% of 67 conceived to first insemination. In the rectovaginal technique used widely at present conception rate for the palpation of ovaries showed 6.6% (index) higher than that of non-palpation. Conception rate of the insemination site; the intra-uterine horn, intra-uterus, just inside the cervix and depositing in mid-cervix were 62.5, 78.4, 74.6, and 80.9% respectively, however, there was no difference in conception rate between cervical and uterine deposition of forzon semen except for the intra-uterine horn.
To study the residue of organophosphorus pesticides in the ocean environment on the Cheju island, EPN[O-ethyl-O-4-nitrophenyl phenylphosphonothioate] and monocrotophos [Dimethyl-1-methyl-2-methyl carba-moylvinylphosphate] of organophosphorus pesticides are surveyed on coastal environment of Cheju city and Wimi in May and October 1996. The qualified limit detection of EPN and monocrotophos are 0.005ng/mL and 0.006ng/mL in the water by GC-FPD, respectively. The qualified limit detection of EPN and monocrotophos are 0.010ng/g and 0.012ng/g in the solid such as sediment and sea organism by GC-FPD, respectively. EPN and monocrotophos are not detected in seawater and sedimnet. Moreover EPN and monocrotophos are neither detected in seaweed cava (Ecklonia cava), Agar (Gelidium amansii), turban sell(Batillus cornutus) and sea urchin(Anthocidaris Crassispina). EPN, monocrotophos used in the farm on the Cheju island are not residued in the coastal environment in the Cheju island.
Five species of intertidal clams including Ruditapes philippinarum, Tegillarca granosa, Solen strictus, Heteromacoma irus, and Coecella chinensis were tested for the presence of the protozoan parasite, Perkinsus sp. using fluid thioglycollate medium (FTM) fortified with antibiotics and histological techniques. Each individual clam was placed in a test tube filled with 10ml FTM, placed in totally dark place, and incubated over a week. After incubation the clam tissues were stained with Lugol's iodine solution and examined under a light microscope to find out any hypnospores of Perkensus sp. in the tissues. Cross-sections of the clams were also embedded in paraffin, sliced to 3um, and stained with Harry's hematoxylene and Picro eosine to observe the presence of tomont or trophozoites. Perkinsus sp. were found in the presence of tomont or trophozoites. Perkinsus sp. were found in the tissues of R. philippinarum collected from Kangjin and Wando, along the south coast of Korea. However, Perkinsus sp. was not found in four other species of clams nor R. philippinaurm collected from Kimnyong and Waido in Cheju. A size-dependent Perkinsus sp. infection was found in R. philippinarum collected rom Kangjin and Wando the clams smaller than 15mm in shell width do not exhibit and Perkinsus sp. while other clams greater than 20mm in shell width exhibit almost 100% infection. To determine the number of Perkinsus sp. in the clams, FTM cultured clam tissues were digested with 2M NaOH solution and the number of hypnospores in the tube were counted. The number of hypnospores counted from the tissues indicated that each Manila clam contains 100,000 to 3,500,000 Perkinsus cells or 20,000 to 1,000,000 cells per gram tissue wet weight. The results of cell counts also suggests that such a high occurrence of Perkinsus sp. in the clam may cause mortality, as already reported from other studies of Perkinsus spp.
A preliminary survey of Sarcocystis species in the slaughtered cattle in Cheju was undertaken during May through October 1989, using digested diagnostic technique for the heart, the esophagus and the dorsal muscles of the neck specimens digested in 0.5% trypsin solution. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. The overall infection rate of Sarcocystis in a total of 218 slaughtered cattle was as high as 36.7% with the highest frequencies in the esophagus muscles(21. 6%), followed by in the dorsal muscles of the neck(19.1%) and in the heart rnuscles(17.9%). 2. Age difference was noticed as 64.3% in the cattle older than five years in comparison with 41.7%, 34.4%, in the group of two to four years and in the group of younger than two years respectively. 3. It was also noticed that the prevalence in the Brahman cross breed was higher(40.0%) than in any other breeds. 4. Regional distribution of Sarcocystis infections was observed as 75.0% in south-east area, 50.0% 44.7%, 35.0%, 32.0% and 20.6% in the areas of Seogwipo city, north-west, south-west, Cheju city and northeast area respectively. 5. According to the type of rearing the infection rate in the ranch type farm was noticed with and in the stock farms(36.2%).
