  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between bone density and dietary intake for college women in their twenties. This study was performed on 160 female college students residing in Gangwon-do. It was conducted using ultrasound measurement of calcaneus bone density, anthropometric checkup and food-frequency questionnaires (FFQ) comprising 94 kinds of commonly consumed foods. Subjects were divided into two groups according to the T-score of bone density: a normal group (n = 113 persons, T-score ${\geq}1$) and a risk group (n = 47, T-score < 1.0). The average age of the subjects was 20.17 years and there was no significant difference between the two groups. Body weight and body fat percentage of the normal group were significantly higher than those of the risk group. The mean daily energy intake of the normal group was significantly higher than that of the risk group. Also, protein, fat, vitamin A, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, iron and zinc intake for the normal group were significantly higher than for the risk group. For the intake of the commonly consumed foods (or dishes) listed in FFQ, the mean daily intake amount of loaf bread, rice cake, potatoes, spicy beef soup, cucumber, seasoned spinach perilla leaves, crown daisy, stir-fried mushroom, sea mustard, beef rib, ham, chicken, mackerel, common squid, drink type curd yogurt, oriental melon and chocolate in the normal group was significantly higher than in the risk group. While, the mean daily intake of ramyun (instant noodle) and carbonated beverage by the normal group was significantly lower than that of the risk group. In conclusion, 20 something female college students showed a higher rate (26.9%) of the bone mineral density risk group (osteopenia or osteoporosis). For the risk group, the levels of nutrient and food intake were lower than in the normal group. Therefore, the bone density risk group needs to increase their nutrient intake and diet quality by increasing the intake of various foods. In addition, they should decrease the intake of foods, which are negative for skeletal health such as instant noodles and carbonated beverages.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution of eruption disturbance and to analyze its causes, treatment methods, and duration of orthodontic traction, based on 703 patients with eruption disturbance who were treated in the pediatric dental clinic of Seoul National University Dental Hospital between July 2011 and June 2016. Eruption disturbance in pediatric patients was most prevalent in the maxillary canine, followed by the maxillary central incisor and maxillary first molar. Eruption disorder of the maxillary canine was more common in females (p < 0.001), whereas the maxillary central incisor (p = 0.009), maxillary first molar (p < 0.001) and mandibular first molar (p = 0.028) were more common in males than females. The most common causes of eruption disturbance were abnormality of the eruption pathway and the presence of obstacles in the pathway. Orthodontic traction was the most prevalent treatment choice for eruption disorder, mostly done for the maxillary central incisors. The duration of orthodontic traction was shorter with younger age (p < 0.001) and lower crown position (p < 0.001). It is important for pediatric patients to detect eruption disorders early through regular checkup, and it is necessary to initiate treatment at an appropriate time with an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

  • This study examined the serum lipid levels according to the obesity indices, and obtained the relationship between obesity indices and serum lipid levels among adults who underwent a health checkup in a university hospital. The subjects for this study were 4,112 adults aged 18 to 77 years who underwent medical examinations at the health center of a university hospital in Daejeon city from Jan 2012 to Dec 2013. The serum lipid levels (TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, TG, AI) and obesity indices (height, weight, waist circumference, body fat rate, BMI, WHR WSR) of the study subjects were surveyed from self-recorded questionnaires and medical examination charts of the hospital. As a result, the serum lipid levels (TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, TG, AI) of the study subjects were increased significantly with higher level of obesity indices (WC, body fat rate, BMI, WHR WSR) in both sexes. The TC, LDL-C, TG, and AI showed that positive correlated with the WC, body fat rate, BMI, and WSR in both sexes, but HDL-C was negatively correlated with the WC, body fat rate, BMI, and WSR in both sexes. The above results suggest that the obesity indices and the serum lipid levels are closely related, i.e., the serum lipid levels increase with increasing obesity indices.

  • Background: In Korea, the prevalence of obesity has steadily increased, and the socioeconomic burden of obesity has increased along with it. In 2015, the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity (KSSO), providing limited open access to its databases so that the status of obesity and obesity management could be investigated. Methods: Using NHIS databases, we analyzed nationwide population-based studies for obesity using the definition of obesity (body mass index ${\geq}25kg/m^2$) in subjects over the age of 20. Age and sex standardization were used for all data. Results: The KSSO released the 'Obesity Fact Sheet 2016' using the 2006-2015 NHIS Health Checkup database. The prevalence of obesity steadily increased from 28.7% in 2006 to 32.4% in 2015, and the prevalence of abdominal obesity also steadily increased from 18.4% in 2009 to 20.8% in 2015. The prevalence of class II obesity steadily increased from 2006 to 2015, such that the total prevalence was 4.8% in 2015 (5.6% in men and 4.0% in women). The highest prevalence of obesity was found in Jeju Island, while the lowest prevalence was found in Daegu City. The highest prevalence of abdominal obesity was also found in Jeju Island, while the lowest prevalence was found in Gwangju City. Conclusion: Based on the Obesity Fact Sheet 2016, a strategy for reducing the prevalence of obesity is needed, especially in Korean men.
