  • This manuscript presents a comprehensive mathematical model to investigate buckling stability and postbuckling response of bio-inspired composite beams with helicoidal orientations. The higher order shear deformation theory as well as the Timoshenko beam theories are exploited to include the shear influence. The equilibrium nonlinear integro-differential equations of helicoidal composite beams are derived in detail using the energy conservation principle. Differential integral quadrature method (DIQM) is employed to discretize the nonlinear system of differential equations and solve them via the Newton iterative method then obtain the response of helicoidal composite beam. Numerical calculations are carried out to check the validity of the present solution methodology and to quantify the effects of helicoidal rotation angle, elastic foundation constants, beam theories, geometric and material properties on buckling, postbuckling of bio-inspired helicoidal composite beams. The developed model can be employed in design and analysis of curved helicoidal composite beam used in aerospace and naval structures.

  • Fourteen calibration ehamber tests were performed using one cylindrical and two tapered piles with different taper angles to investigate the changes of the bearing capacity of tapered piles with soil state and taper angle of piles. The results of calibration chamber tests show that the ultimate base resistance of tapered piles increases with increasing mean stress and relative density of soil. It also increases with increasing taper angle for medium sand, but with decreasing taper angle for dense sand. The ultimate shaft resistance of tapered piles increases as vertical and horizontal stresses, relative density and taper angle increase. Based on the results of model pile load tests, a new design method with shape factors for estimation of the bearing capacity of tapered piles is proposed considering the effect of soil state and taper angle on bearing capacity of tapered piles. In order to check the accuracy of predictions calculated using the new method, middle-scale field pile load tests were also conducted on cylindrical and tapered drilled shafts in clayey sand. Comparison of calculated values with measured ones shows that the new design method produces satisfactory predictions tor tapered piles.

  • Most of the previous works on numerical analysis of galloping of transmission lines are generally based on the quasisteady theory. However, some wind tunnel tests of the rectangular section or hangers of suspension bridges have shown that the galloping phenomenon has a strong unsteady characteristic and the test results are quite different from the quasi-steady calculation results. Therefore, it is necessary to check the applicability of the quasi-static theory in galloping analysis of the ice-covered transmission line. Although some limited unsteady simulation researches have been conducted on the variation of parameters such as aerodynamic damping, aerodynamic coefficients with wind speed or wind attack angle, there is a need to investigate the numerical simulation of unsteady galloping of two-dimensional iced transmission line with comparison to wind tunnel test results. In this paper, it is proposed to conduct a two dimensional (2-D) unsteady numerical analysis of ice-covered transmission line galloping. First, wind tunnel tests of a typical crescent-shapes iced conductor are conducted firstly to check the subsequent quasisteady and unsteady numerical analysis results. Then, a numerical simulation model consistent with the aeroelastic model in the wind tunnel test is established. The weak coupling methodology is used to consider the fluid-structure interaction in investigating a two-dimension numerical simulation of unsteady galloping of the iced conductor. First, the flow field is simulated to obtain the pressure and velocity distribution of the flow field. The fluid action on the iced conduct at the coupling interface is treated as an external load to the conductor. Then, the movement of the conduct is analyzed separately. The software ANSYS FLUENT is employed and redeveloped to numerically analyze the model responses based on fluid-structure interaction theory. The numerical simulation results of unsteady galloping of the iced conduct are compared with the measured responses of wind tunnel tests and the numerical results by the conventional quasi-steady theory, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to identify the effect of kerfing and incising pretreatments on high-temperature drying characteristics of cedar and larch boxed-heart timbers with a cross section of less than 150 mm. The result showed that the pretreatments have made a significant difference regarding surface check and shrinkage. Although the kerfing was suitable as a pretreatment to reduce the occurrence of surface check, the incising was not suitable as a pretreatment since the knives of timber joined together, causing the conversion to the surface checks. The shrinkage showed a significant result that the final moisture content was reduced in the order of incising, kerfing, and kerfing-incising after the drying process based on the pretreatment condition. Twist was more affected by the grain angle than the anisotropy of the juvenile wood, and there was no effect of pretreatments.

  • This paper presents the prediction of the actual strength of shear reinforcement on the basis of the concept of effective stirrups. The prediction method incorporating the shear cracking angle was proposed with the estimation by the Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT). To check the validity of the method, discussion of the current ACI 318-05 and comparison of 39 test results from the literature including author's retrospective test data were made. The influencing factors of compressive concrete strength and type of shear-reinforcement were also investigated. Furthermore, two full-scale beam specimens shear-reinforced with headed bars were tested to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method.

  • 'Double Shine', a cultivar of Gypsophila paniculata was newly developed for the cut flowers by Jeollabuk-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services. It has morphological characteristics of the spreading plant type, double florets of many petals and two pistils, emarginate petal tip and cup shaped calyx. Also 'Double Shine' has several traits such as strong flower stalk, bright colored flower, narrow branching angle and more or less resistance to powdery mildew and pest injury. Furthermore, 'Double Shine' produced higher primary branches, and longer flower stalk length with internodal length and than did a check variety 'Bristol Fairy' during summer cultivation in subalpine areas. Blooming of 'Double Shine' was delayed by 16 days, its floret had broader width, compared to 'Bristol Fairy'. Moreover, 'Double Shine' produced normal flowers with two pistils and 8.5 stamens, with little production of malformed flowers in the high temperature condition.

  • In this paper, we propose a new short-circuit detecting method which can detect bad short-circuits, one of bad types occurring in PCB(Printed Circuit Board), by using SURF(Speeded-Up Robust Features) algorithm. The basic procedure in the proposed method sequentially consists of extracting features from both sample and inputted images by SURF, performing perspective transform by feature matching and matching results, extracting check areas of interest, binary coding and extracting short-circuits, and verifying results. The proposed method focuses on the robustness which can detect bad short-circuits even though the position and angle of PCB are not uniform and arbitrarily placed. Experimental results show that our method enables to detect bad short-circuits regardless of the location and angle of PCB placed variously and validate that the proposed method outperforms the conventional methods detecting bad short-circuits manually on the aspect of both the detection rate and time.

  • Sound propagation in a sloping sea bed ocean environment demonstrates ray curvature in a direction parallel to the shoreline. The theoretical analysis of this shows that an ensonified region and a shadow region are formed, and their spatial extents depend on the spatial coordinates of source and receiver, a sloping angle and sourece frequency. The purpose of this experimental study using a sloping sea bed model is to check the theoretical prediction as a part of an ongoing investigation in the ocean environment. The sloping sea bed model used in this experiment had an ideal pressure-release boundaries and a sloping angle of $220.5{\circ}$ A single frequency signal and an impulsive signal were used as omnidirectional point sources. The spatial acoustic field characteristics in the across slope direction were measured using the former and the frequency dependent field characteristics in a specific point were obtained using the latter. It has been found that the analysis for the spatial extent of shadow zone and the frequency dependent field characteristics in the across slope direction, has a good agreement with the theoretical solution.

  • In this paper, the problem of electromagnetic transmission through slits in two parallel conducting plates which separate two half spaces is considered. The coupled integral equations for the electric field distributions over the slits are developed for the case that the TM polarized plane wave is incident on the slit and solved by the method of moments. The transmitted power beyond the slit-perforated conducting parallel plates is computed in order to check the variations of the coupled power through slits against some parameters such as the incident angle of the TM polarized wave, slit width, lateral distance between two slits, and distance between the conducting plates. When the lateral distance between two slits approaches near the multiples of half wavelengths, the transmission resonance (maximum power transmission) is observed. If the slit width in the incident side is narrow and the distance between conducting plates is small compared to the wavelength, the maximum of transmitted power is observed to be nearly independent of the incident angle and slit width. In addition, the mechanism of the transmission resonance in the present geometry is explained using a simplified geometry and its equivalent circuit.
