This study is about the mechanical properties of epoxy composite reinforced with nano $TiO_2$ particle. Tensile strength, fracture toughness, vicker's hardness and Izod Impact test were carried out to investigate the effect of particle size and content of $TiO_2$ on the mechanical properties of $TiO_2$/epoxy composites. The results showed that the strength of the $TiO_2$/epoxy composites were higher than that of the pure epoxy. The best improvement of tensile strength was achieved in case of the particle size was 21 nanometer and the content was 3 weight percent. However, the Izod Impact value and the Vicker's hardness of $TiO_2$/epoxy composites showed no clear tendency.
The mechanical properties of low-pressure die cast (LPDC) A356-T6 automotive road wheels are evaluated and correlated with their corresponding microstructures. In this study, two types of alloy wheels processed using different LPDC gating system are investigated. The yield stress, tensile stress, and elongation values tested at room temperature are correlated with the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) with respect to the gating system, and are also compared with similar studies. The SDAS and precipitates are examined using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The phase information is also investigated using X-ray diffraction. Charpy impact tests are also performed from $-100^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$, and the fracture surfaces are examined using SEM. The impact energy is demonstrated to increase with increasing temperatures without exhibiting specific transition behaviors as in other nonferrous alloys. The fracture toughness is also evaluated using three point bend test with single-edged bend specimens. The obtained fracture toughness values are in good agreement with those in similar studies.
Austenite formation and Low temperatures mechanical properties of HSLA steel of different starting structures have been studied by intercritical annealing(IA). The different starting structures are: ferrite+pearlite(FP1), martensite(M1), cold worked ferrite+pearlite(FP2) and cold worked martensite(M2). In most cases tensile strength and elongation was increased by decreasing the testing temperatures regardless of the IA time. Tensile strength of the cold worked starting structures was higher than that of the non-cold worked starting structures. However not any noticeable difference in elongation was found between two cases. Low temperatures impact properties were affected by the starting structures. Charpy V-notch impact transition temperatures of the M-starting structures were around $-40^{\circ}C$, and those of the FP starting structures were around $-10^{\circ}C$. Impact energy was lower in the cold worked specimens than in the non-cold worked specimens at the same starting structures. DP structure obtained from the M-starting structure has shown superior low temperatures mechanical properties than the DP structure obtained from the FP-starting structure.
It is reported that the toughness and safety margins of the SA106 Gr.C main steam line piping steel is reduced due to dynamic strain aging (DSA) at the reactor operating temperature for Leak-Before-Break (LBB) application. In this study, intercritical annealing in two-phase ($\alpha$+${\gamma}$)region was performed to investigate the possibility of improving the toughness and reducing DSA susceptibility. The manifestations of DSA were still observed in the tensile tests of the annealed specimens. However, the ductility loss caused by DSA was smaller than that in the as-received material. Furthermore, the intercritical annealing was able to increase the Charpy impact toughness by 1.5 times compared to as-received. With the heat treatment, we could obtain microstructural changes such as the cleaner retained ferrite, increased ferrite content and somewhat finer grain size. It is considered that the reduced DSA was induced by cleaner retained ferrite, which in turn resulted in higher impact toughness in addition to the general toughening due to finer grain sizes and increased ferrite content.

This study deals with the effect of austempering temperature and time on the microstructures and mechanical properties of high-carbon nano-bainite steels. Although all the austempered specimens are mainly composed of bainite, martensite, and retained austenite, the specimens which are austempered at lower temperatures contain finer packets of bainite. As the duration for austempering increases, bainite packets are clearly seen due to larger amount of carbon atoms being redistributes into bainite and retained austenite during bainite transformation. As the austempering time increases, the hardness of the specimens gradually decreases as a result of lower martensite volume fraction, and later increases again due to the formation of nano-bainite structure. The Charpy impact test results indicate that the impact toughness of the austempered specimens can be improved if the formation of nano-bainite structure and the transformation induced plasticity effect of retained austenite are optimized at higher austempering temperature.

[ $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ ] laminate composites have been successfully fabricated by alternately stacking $MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ powder layer and Nb sheet, followed by hot pressing in a graphite mould. The fabricating parameters were selected as hot press temperatures. The instrumented Charpy impact test was carried out at the room temperature in order to investigate the relationship between impact properties and fabricating temperatures. The interfacial shear strength between $MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ and Nb, which is associated with the fabricating temperature and the growth of interfacial reaction layer, is also discussed. The plastic deformation of Nb sheet and the interfacial delamination were macroscopically observed. The $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ laminate composites had the maximum impact value when fabricated at 1623K, accompanying the increase of fracture displacement and crack propagation energy. The interfacial shear strength of $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ laminate composites increased with the growth of interfacial reaction layer, which resulted from the increase of fabricating temperature. there is an appropriate interfacial shear strength for the enhancement of impact value of $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ laminate composites. A large increase of interfacial shear strength restrains the plastic deformation of Nb sheet.
There is increasing need for high-strength steel especially for the high-rise steel building structure. High- strength steels, however, may have mechanical properties that are significantly different from those of the conventional steels. The application of high-strength steels to building structures should be reviewed as to whether inelastic behavior equivalent to that of conventional steels can be attained or not. In this study, SM570TMC steel, which was developed recently in Korea, was tested to evaluate mechanical properties and welding characteristics for use as a structural steel. Yield phenomenon of SM570TMC steel, which is continuous yielding, is quite different from that of conventional steel. The distributions of yield strength of SM570TMC steel were uniform regardless of thickness, while the minimum yield strength was 440MPa. Also, the flat distributions of hardness in z-direction were found to comprise one of the important properties. Results of the charpy impact tests at -5oC revealed toughness values of SM570TMC steel, which were higher than those of equivalent as rolled steel. Carbon equivalent(Ceq) values of SM570TMC steel, which were related to welding performance, were lower than those of equivalent as rolled steel.

Laser beam welding process is a relatively new process in comparison with arc welding process, but it is expected to apply widely because of the many advantages, and research and development of that process is being progressed actively for the practical use. the application of this welding process has been restricted due to the high initial investment and the need of precise processing against the material, but cost reduction and thick plate welding in high speed have become practial by recent technological development, and this welding process to not only small parts in automobile, machinery and physicochemical field, but also a large structure and pipe line are being applied. In order to utilize this welding process appropriately to a steel structure, the properties of welding residual stresses and fracture toughness in welded joints are to be investigated for relibilty. On this study, after performing the finite element analysis, thermal and residual stress properties have been examined to the general structural steel (HT50) by laser beam welding. Besides, the property of fracture toughness has been investigated by the Charpy impact test and 3-points bending CTOD test carried out in the range of temperature between $-60^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$. From the research results it is revealed that the maximum residual stress appears in the center of plate thickness and the fracture toughness is influenced by strength mis-match.
Recently, many industries have been employing the application of laser beam welding, due to the resulting high welding quality, such as smaller width of melting and heat affective zone, smaller welding deformation, and fine grains of weldment, compared to arc welding. However, in order to appropriately utilize this welding process with steel structure, the characteristics of welding residual stresses and fracture toughness in welded joints are to be investigated for reliability. Therefore, in this study, the mechanical properties of weldments by arc and laser welding are investigated using FEM to confirm the weldability of laser welding to the general structural steel (HT50). The Charpy impact test and 3-points bending CTOD test are carried out in the range of temperatures between $-60^{\circ}C\;and\;20^{\circ}C$, in order to understand the effect on the fracture toughness of weldments. From the research results, it has been found that the maximum residual stress appears at the center of plate thickness, and that the fracture toughness is influenced by strength mis-match.

The ultrasonic characteristics of 2.25Cr-1Mo steel were investigated in relation to the isothermal heat treatment temperature and time. Charpy impact tests and hardness tests were conducted on individual specimens with three different heat treatment conditions. A pulse-echo method with longitudinal waves was used to measure the attenuation and velocity of ultrasonic waves. The FATT (fracture appearance transition temperature) increased with an increase in the isothermal heat treatment time, which implies that the toughness decreased. As the isothermal heat treatment time and temperature increased, the longitudinal wave velocity and ultrasonic attenuation coefficient were raised.
