  • Evaluation of fracture toughness of welded structures has a significant influence on the structural design. However the residual stresses is redistributed while the welded structures is cut for preparing specimens. This study investigated an effect of the welding residual stress redistribution on the impact absorption energy of Charpy specimen. SA516Gr70 steel plate by at the flux cored arc welding (FCAW) and gas tungsten arc welding(GTAW) was cutting. Specimens for Charpy impact testing were taken from the welded plate. Two material removal mechanisms (wire cutting and water jet) were used to make the specimens. Welding residual stress and redistribution residual stress were measured using the XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) method. The amount of redistribution of residual stress depends on the different material removal mechanism. Redistribution of residual stress of reduced the impact absorption energy by 15%.

  • The paper provides the test results and analysis on the behavior of steel 1.7147 at different temperatures. Mechanical uniaxial tests were used to determine mechanical properties, resistance to creep and Charpy impact tests to determine impact energy. Test results are presented in the form of engineering stress-strain diagrams, creep curves as well as numerical data related to impact energy. The results show that the tensile strength has the highest value at room temperature, and the same goes for the yield strength as well as for modulus of elasticity. After room temperature both of mentioned properties decrease with temperature increasing. Some of creep curves were modeled using rheological models and analytical equation. Based on Charpy impact energy an assessment of fracture toughness was made.

  • In this study, microstructural investigation was conducted on the separation phenomenon occurring during Charpy impact tests of API X80 linepipe steels. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of microstructural phases present in the API X80 steels such as acicular ferrite, bainite, and hard secondary phases. Detailed microstructural analysis of fractured impact specimens showed that highly elongated bainite worked as prior initiation sites for separations, and that the number and length of separations increased with increasing volume fraction of bainite. In the steels having high work hardenability, tearing-shaped separations were found because the hammer-impacted region was seriously hardened during the impact test, which led to the reduction in the impact toughness. As the test temperature decreased, the tendency of separations increased, but separations were not observed when the cleavage fracture prevailed at very low temperatures. Thus, the minimization of the formation of bainite and secondary phases in the steels would be beneficial for preventing or minimizing separations because separations deteriorated low-temperature impact toughness.

  • The Charpy V impact test on subsize was performed on narrow laser welds of low carbon steel sheets, joined by using a continuous wave 3kW CO$_2$ laser. Under certain conditions, a bimodal fracture behaviour has been experienced in Charpy V impact test of narrow laser beam welds. Deviation of the fracture path from the fusion zone into the base metal was dominated at high test temperature. It can be seen that the deviation always occurred after ductile initiation. If the deviation occurs on a small testing specimen, the same trend would happen on the actual laser welded structure. Fracture will then propagate through the base material even if the weld metal has low toughness.

  • Strain gage method is used to evaluate the mode I dynamic stress intensity factor of marging steel(18Ni) and titanium alloy(Ti-6A1-4V). To decide the best strain gage position on specimen, static fracture toughness test was performed. Then instrumented charpy impact test and dynamic tensile test was performed by using strain gage method for evlauating dynamic stress intensity factor. Strain gage signals on the crack tip region are used to calculate the stress intensity factors. It is found that strain gage method is more useful than method by using load which is obtained from impact tup to assess dynamic characteristics such as dynamic stress intensity factor.

  • In order to apply thermoplastic composites using PETG resin to various industrial fields such as bicycle frames and industrial parts, it is necessary to verify the impact resistance, durability and mechanical properties of the manufactured composite materials. To improve the mechanical properties, durability and impact resistance of PETG resin, an amorphous resin, in this study, compound and injection molding process were carried out using various additives such as TiO2, carbon black, polyolefin elastomer, and PETG amorphous resin. The thermal and mechanical properties of the thermoplastic composites, and the Charpy impact strength. The analysis was performed to evaluate the characteristics according to the types of additives. DSC and DMA analyzes were performed for thermal properties, and tensile strength, flexural strength, and tensile strength change rate were measured using a universal testing machine to evaluate mechanical properties. Charpy impact strength test was conducted to analyze the impact characteristics, and the fracture section was analyzed after the impact strength test. In the case of POE material-added thermoplastic composites, thermal and mechanical properties tend to decrease, but workability and impact resistance tend to be superior to those of PETG materials.

  • Many of researches regarding mechanical properties of composite materials are associated with humid environment and temperature. Especially the temperature is a very important factor influencing the design of thermoplastic composites. However, the effect of temperature on impact behavior of reinforced composites have not yet been fully explored. An approach which predicts critical fracture toughness G$_{IC}$ was performed by the impact test in this work. The main goal of this work is to study the effect of temperature and span of specimen supports on the results of Charpy impact test for GF/PE composite. The critical fracture energy and failure mechanism of GF/PE composites were investigated in the temperature range of $60^{\circ}C;to;-50^{\circ}C$ by the Charpy impact test. The critical fracture energy showed the maximum at the ambient temperature, and it tended to decrease as the temperature increased or decreased from the ambient temperature. The major failure mechanisms are the fiber matrix debonding, the fiber pull-out and/or delamination and the matrix deformation.n.

  • In this study, six kinds of low-carbon steel specimens with different ferrite-pearlite microstructures were fabricated by varying the Nb content and the transformation temperature. The microstructural factors of ferrite grain size, pearlite fraction, interlamellar spacing, and cementite thickness were quantitatively measured based on optical and scanning electron micrographs; then, Charpy impact tests were conducted in order to investigate the correlation of the microstructural factors with the impact toughness and the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). The microstructural analysis results showed that the Nb4 specimens had ferrite grain size smaller than that of the Nb0 specimens due to the pinning effect resulting from the formation of carbonitrides. The pearlite interlamellar spacing and the cementite thickness also decreased as the transformation temperature decreased. The Charpy impact test results indicated that the impact-absorbed energy increased and the ductile-brittle transition temperature decreased with addition of Nb content and decreasing transformation temperature, although all specimens showed ductile-brittle transition behaviour.

  • This study was performed to establish the characteristics of the heat affected zones from view point of the repair weldability for a damaged CrMoV steam turbine rotor steel. Characterization of the heat affected zones of the weldment was conducted with respect to various of postweld heat treatment temperatures, $566^{\circ}C$, $621^{\circ}C$ and $677^{\circ}C$. The evaluations of the heat affected zones were carried out in terms of microstructural characterization, microhardness measurements, Charpy v-notch impact, tensile and stress-rupture tests. The results indicated that the effect of the postweld heat treatment at $677^{\circ}C$ exhibited the favorable microstructure and mechanical properties for the stability of the heat affected zones. While the heat affected zone of the weldment, produced without postweld heat treatment, displayed the inferior toughness and microstructure indicating localized carbide precipitations on the grain boundary. It was also indicated that the stability of the heat affected zones were deteriorated by the formation of the cavitation on the grain boundaries.
