Gonadal Development and Reproduction in the Trumpet Shell, Charonia sauliae

  • This study devised and tested a histological staging system for gonadal development in the trumpet shell, Charonia sauliae, which was collected along the south coast of Jeju Island, South Korea. This paper details for the first time the gonadal development characteristics of C. sauliae. Ovary and testis development in C. sauliae can be roughly divided into five stages: growing, mature, spent, degenerative, and resting. The trumpet shelll has multiple fecundation and fertilization during the spawning season for out-of-step gonadal development in high-temperature and low-salinity environments. Female trumpet shell tended to have larger shells and were more abundant than males (64.26% of all animals collected were female).

Effects of Three Microalgae, Tetraselmis suecica, Chaetoceros calcitrans, and Phaeodactylum tricornutum on Larvae and Spat Growth of the Trumpet Shell Charonia sauliae

  • The trumpet shell Charonia sauliae is an endangered and valuable species with potential for aquaculture. For artificial propagation of C. sauliae, the effects of three different food microalgae on the development, growth, and survival rate of the larvae and spat were investigated. For the larval feeding experiments, we utilized six microalgae species as food sources, namely Pavlova lutheri, Tetraselmis suecica, Nannochloris oculata, Isochrysis galbana, Chaetoceros calcitrans, and Phaeodactylum tricornutum; for the larval and spat growth and survival experiments, we utilized T. suecica, C. calcitrans, and P. tricornutum. The results showed that the temporal digestion index (TDI) for the veliger larvae was significantly different for C. sauliae fed the different microalgae species (p < 0.05), that the T. suecica, C. calcitrans, and P. tricornutum cultivars were better suited for larval consumption (p < 0.05), and that the growth and survival of the larvae and spat were significantly influenced by food type, specifically P. tricornutum (p < 0.05). Further research is needed to evaluate the effects of other microalgae species, different algal concentrations, and biochemical composition on the growth and survival of C. sauliae.

Short Term Storage and Cryopreservation of Trumpet Shell Charonia sauliae Sperm

  • With the purpose to estimate the possibility of short-term storage and cryopreservation for sperm of Charonia sauliae, which is a potential preparation for its artificial reproduction and further research, in this study, protocols for short-term storage and cryopreservation of trumpet shell sperm was optimized. The effects of different immobilizing solutions, dilution ratios were estimated for short-term storage. And the effects of different cryoprotectant extenders and freezing rates were estimated for cryopreservation in terms of motility and survival of sperm. The results indicated that the artificial sea water of 350 mOsmol/kg is a better immobilizing solution and sperm which was diluted at a ratio of 1:1 (v/v) had higher motility and survival rate during short-term storage. The effect of 5% dimethyl sulfoxide was significantly better than those of other cryoprotectant extenders. And a freezing rate of $-20^{\circ}C\;min^{-1}$ showed better effect than other freezing rates. In conclusion, this study optimized some key factors of the short-term and cryopreservation of C. sauliae sperm, which can provide valuable data for germ-plasm conservation and artificial propagation of C. sauliae.

Influence of Water Temperature on Spawning Induction, Larval and Spat Rearing of Trumpet Shell, Charonia lampas sauliae (나팔고둥, Charonia lampas sauliae의 산란유발, 유생 및 치패사육에 미치는 수온의 영향)

  • In the present study, the fecundation and fertilization behaviors of the trumpet shell, Charonia fampas sauliae were observed from November 2003 to March 2004. Female has multiple fecundation and multiple fertilization, and the fertilization continued for two days. The fertilized female stayed with the egg mass to protect the eggs, and the fecundation was made during the fertilization. The highest survival rate of egg capsule was 60% at $15^{\circ}C$. Charonia lampas sauliae fed with Chaetoceros calcitrans, Isochysis galbana, and Pavlova lutheri. Growth and survival rates of C. lampas sauliae in the conditions of various water temperature were observed. The highest survival rate was 23% at $15^{\circ}C$ reared for 60 days. The growth was presented in the $15^{\circ}C$ group, with shell length from $408{\pm}21.52{\mu}m\;to\;625{\pm}19.76{\mu}m$ during the experiment.

  • 나팔고둥, Charonia sauliae은 식용 및 공예품으로 애용되어 왔을 뿐만 아니라, 해양생태계에서 불가사리의 천적생물로 각광을 받고 있음에도 불구하고 남획으로 인하여 세계적으로 멸종위기 동물로 알려진 복족류이다. 이러한 중요성에도 불구하고 현재까지 나팔고둥에 관한 연구결과로는 국외에서 발표된 분포(Mel, 1976; Russo et al., 1990) 및 기초생물학적인 보고(Bentivegna et al., 1988; Lin et al., 1996)만이 있을 뿐이고 국내의 경우도 관련 논문을 찾아보기 힘든 실정으로 나팔고둥의 자원을 효율적으로 관리하고 이용하기 위해서는 종묘생산기법을 개발하여 자원 확보 및 산업적 가치를 높일 필요성이 제기된다.
