To secure basic data for intake port design, effects of a port masking on the part load performance were investigated in a 4 valve SI engine. For this purpose, 9 kinds of masking, which have different shapes and masking ratio, are applied to the engine intake system. The characteristics of the performance were estimated through mixture response test at various engine load and speed. The results show that NOx emission, one of indexes for stratification, increases considerably in spite of retarded spark timing due to the stratification which is caused by unequal flow distribution between the two intake ports. The mechanism of stratification by masking is different from axial stratification and the fuel entering through masked port plays a very important role in this stratification process. In conclusion, the port masking method could be easily applied to engine intake system and be very effective for inducing the stratified charging without the change of port design.
This paper describes the process of optimal resonant frequency design with full-bridge series-loaded resonant dc-dc converter in a high efficiency 3.3 kW on-board battery charger application for Electric Vehicles and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles. The optimal range of resonant frequency and switching frequency used for ZVS are determined by considering trade-off between loss of switching devices and resonant network with size of passive/magnetic devices. In addition, it is defined charging region of battery, the load of on-board charger, as the area of load by deliberating the characteristic of resonant. It is verified the designed frequency band by reflecting the defined area on resonant frequency.
Piezoelectric pump can be considered as R-C load and it needs something special driver because the output voltage does not become 0 even though the applied voltage is 0 with common converter. This operating system consists of fly-back converter to increase the input voltage and energy recovery inverter to apply square voltage to the piezoelectric pump. The energy recovery inverter can charge and discharge the energy of capacitive load. In this paper, to enhance performance of the driver, a few elements or circuits are added and modified. To drive the inverter safely, current limit resister is added and adjusted the value to valance the charging and discharging current. In addition, a current limit inductor is added to the input side to limit the input current and enhance the efficiency. Inductor only may make oscillation and another resister is added parallel to the inductor to solve this problem. The converter and inveter are assembled to one board for compactness. The appropriateness is proved with simulation and experiments.
This paper proposes a test device designed for developing a high-voltage multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC). The proposed topology consists of an energy recovery circuit for charging/discharging capacitor, a flyback converter, and a boost converter for supplying power and a bias voltage application to the energy recovery circuit. The energy recovery circuit designed with a half-bridge converter has auxiliary switches operating before the main switches to prevent excessive current from flowing to the main switches. A prototype has been designed to verify the reliability of target capacitors following the voltage fluctuation with a frequency range below 65 kHz. To conduct high root mean square (RMS) current to the capacitor as a load, the MLCC test was conducted after the topology verification was completed through the film capacitor as a load. Through the agreement between the RMS current formula proposed in this paper and the MLCC test results, the possibility of its use was demonstrated for high-voltage MLCC development in the future.
We developed micro power generation system using piezoelectric materials. In our system, the ambient vibrating energy is converting to electric energy by deflection of piezoelectric beams. The system consists of energy generating parts, converting enhancement parts, electric regulation and charging parts, and interface with small-energy-consuming mobile devices. The geometry of piezoelectric beams, the source of vibrating energy, and the electric load of target application determine the characteristics of generating electric power, such as impedance, voltage, current and power density. Therefore, we made a model for analysis of generating power with given information such as piezoelectric materials, geometry, vibration type, and mass. With this model, we can calculate capacitance of piezoelectric beams, generating voltage, current, and power. To obtain maximum energy transfer efficiency, we approached this study in the view of material, electrical, and mechanical engineering
Power system restoration following a massive blackout starts with re-energizing primary transmission lines at first. Some factors such as Ferranti effect, and line charging reactive power should be considered in this stage. Severe overvoltage may be induced by the Ferranti effect at the lines since it would be usually no load condition. And lack of capacitive reactive power will cause the self-excitation. This paper presents a new precise algorithm to analyze the primary restorative transmission system focused on the two major static overvoltage problems during the early restoration process.
The present article investigates the influence of hydrogen concentration on the creep performance of cold-worked stress-relieved unirradiated Zircaloy-4 cladding tube using nanoindentation technique. The as-received Zircaloy-4 tube is hydrided to the concentrations of 600 ppm and 900 ppm using gaseous hydrogen charging method. Constant load indentation creep tests are performed for a dwell period of 600 s in the temperature range of 300℃-500 ℃ at 1000 μN, 2000 μN, and 3000 μN. The impact of hydrogen is evaluated in terms of steady state power law creep exponent and activation energy. The power law creep exponent decreases with increase in hydrogen concentration, however, it remains fairly constant with increase in temperature up to 500 ℃. Moreover, activation energy too decreases significantly with increase in hydrogen concentration. The mean stress exponent and activation energy are found to be 3.58 and 28.67 kJ/mol, respectively, for as-received sample.
In order to charge EVs, they have to be connected to distribution system. Therefore, if unprecedented numbers of EVs are connected to power systems, it could result in deterioration of power quality, overload, and other system problems. In this paper, the effects of voltage sag on the distribution system due to the connection of EVs is evaluated by considering related field data of Republic of Korea such as the number of gasoline-fueled vehicles, seasonal load of power system and the monthly and daily real-time traffic volume. The distribution system and EVs are modeled using the Electro Magnetic Transients Program (EMTP).

Electrical wire explosion (EWE) is characterized by great current density and rapid metal heating, which make itself an ideal tool for nano-materials manufacturing technology. The EWE requires a high voltage electric-energy source. In the current experimental set-up a high voltage capacitor is used for the purpose. Hence, a power supply that is capable of charging the capacitor to a target voltage is required. One of the special requirements is the precise controllability of the stored energy level in the capacitor. Through this study a high voltage capacitor charger using a series resonant converter technology has been developed for the production of nanosize powder. A load capacitor of $32{\mu}F$ can be charged up to 20kV by the developed capacitor charger and discharged through a gap switch and a copper wire.
