  • This paper discusses the influence on long-tenn predictions of the ship response in ocean by using the Global Wave Statistics data, GWS, and wave information from the remote sensing satellites. GWS's standard scatter diagrams of significant wave height and zero-crossing wave period are suggested to be corrected to a round number of 0.01/1000 fitted with a statistical analytic model of the conditional lognormal distribution for zero-crossing wave period. The GEOSAT satellite data are utilized which presented by I. R. Young and G. J. Holland (1996, named as GEOSAT data). At first, qualities of this data are investigated, and statistical characteristic trends are studied by means of applying known probability distribution functions. The wave height data of GEOSAT are compared to the data observed onboard merchant ships, the data observed by measure instrument installed on the ocean-going container ship and so on. To execute a long-tenn prediction of ship response, joint probability functions between wave height and wave period are introduced, therefore long-term statistical predictions are executed by using the functions.

  • This study addresses a computational work of the impulsive wave which is discharged from the open end of a pipe. An initial compression wave inside the pipe is assumed to propagate toward atmosphere. The over pressure and wave-length of the initial compression wave are changed to investigate the characteristic values of the impulsive wave. The second order total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme is employed to solve the axisymmetric, compressible, unsteady Euler equations. The relationship between the initial compression wave form and impulsive wave is characterized in terms of the peak pressure of the impulsive wave and its directivity. The results obtained show that for the initial compression wave of a large wave-length the peak pressure of the impulsive wave does not depend on the over pressure of the initial compression wave, but for the initial compression wave of a very short wave-length, like a shock wave, the peak pressure of the impulsive wave is increased with an increase in the over pressure of the initial compression wave. The directivity of the impulsive wave to the pipe axis becomes significant with a decrease in the wave-length of the initial compression wave.

  • This paper investigates the characteristics of waves generated by a flap-type wave maker in a two-dimensional wave channel. Measurements are carried out for various water depths, wave heights, periods, and lengths capacitance-type wave height gages. The experimental results are shown to satisfy the dispersion relation of the linear wave theory. For waves with a small height and long period, the wave profiles agree well with those of the linear wave theory. However, as the wave height and period become higher and shorter, respectively, it is shown that the wave profiles measured in the present experiments are different from the linear wave profiles, and the measured wave heights are smaller than the target wave heights, which may be due to the non-linearity of the waves. As the wave progresses toward the channel end, the wave height gradually decreases. This reduction in the wave height along the wave channel is explained by the wave energy dissipation due to the friction of the side walls of the channel. The performance of the wave absorber in the channel is found to be acceptable from the results of the wave reflection tests.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the characteristic of radiation environment in the urban and rural through the field observation in the summer. The radiation balance was compared through the measurement of the shortwave radiation and long-wave radiation in the urban, sub-urban, and rural. The following conclusion could be obtained from this research. (1)In the results of observation including the rain-day, it was found that the short wave radiance in the urban is lower about 10% than the rural. (2)The upper part of atmosphere layers in the urban are aabsorb much short wave radiation energies compared with the rural relatively. It can increase the temperature of the upper part of atmosphere layers and the emittance of long wave radiation. (3)The ratio of the downward short wave radiation to the downward long wave radiation was 1.24 for the urban, 1.28 for sub-urban and 1.35 for rural. It can be estimated that the atmosphere condition of the rural is better than that of other areas. (4)The net radiation of the rural was lower that of the urban. It was found that the energy in and outflow of the rural is easier than that of the urban. (5)The temperature variation for the long-wave radiation change of the rural showed more sensitive than that of the urban. It was came from the radiation characteristics of the surrounding environment and can be used as the important index to evaluate the thermal environment characteristic of urban.

  • Interest in renewable energy has been increasing in recent years for many reasons, and there have been many studies on new types of wave energy converters and mechanisms for them. However, in this paper, motion characteristics of a wave energy converter with a wave activating body type is studied with an experiment. In order to conduct the experiment, a simple wave activating body type's wave energy converter is proposed. Experimental variations consist of connection type and location. The connection type controls the rotation motions of structures, and the connection location controls the distance between structures. The movement of floating structures, such as rotation, velocity, and acceleration, is measured with a potentiometer and a motion capture camera. Using the recorded data, the motion characteristics derived from the experimental variations are investigated.

  • This paper represented driving characteristic of a thin-type ultrasonic motor by fabricating and utilizing two kinds of drivers which could generate sinusoidal wave, square wave, respectively. A thin brass plate was used as a cross shaped vibrator and sixteen ceramic plates were attached on upper and bottom side of the brass plate. From the thin stator, elliptical displacements of the four contact tips were obtained. Speed, torque, and current were measured by applying sinusoidal waves through driving equipment such as function generator, power amplifier: to measure characteristic of the motor. As a result, the speed and the torque changed linearly at either driving frequency of 88.6 ~ 87.6[kHz] or voltage of 24~36[V]. Two-drivers which generate sinusoidal waves and square waves were designed respectively, and then were compared through some experiments in order to be put to practical use. In conclusion, the drivers had similar characteristic of speed-torque at similar frequency and voltage. It was able to control the motor linearly by using the driver generating square wave among two-drivers. Besides, it also was possible to make the drivers smaller.

  • Instability of oblique detonation waves (ODW) at off-attaching condition was investigated through a series of numerical simulations. Two-dimensional wedge of finite length was considered in $H_2/O_2/N_2$ mixtures at superdetonative condition. Numerical simulation was carried out with a compressible fluid dynamics code and a detailed hydrogen-oxygen combustion mechanism. Present result reveals that there is a chemical kinetic limit of the ODW detachment, in addition to the theoretical limit predicted by Rankine-Hugoniot theory with equilibrium chemistry. Result also presents that ODW still attaches at a wedge as an oblique shock-induced flame showing periodically unstable motion, if the Rankine-Hugoniot limit of detachment is satisfied but the chemical kinetic limit is not. Mechanism of the periodic instability is considered as interactions of shock and reaction waves coupled with chemical kinetic effects. From the investigation of characteristic chemical time, condition of the periodic instability is identified as follows; at the detaching condition of the Rankine-Hugoniot theory, (1) flow residence time is smaller than the chemical characteristic time, behind the detached shock wave with heat addition, (2) flow residence time should be greater than the chemical characteristic time, behind an oblique shock wave without heat addition.

  • Traveling-wave electrodes for the high-speed Ti:LiNbO$_{3}$ modulators are designed. For a solution to the problems of 1) phase-velocity mismatching between the optical wave and the Modulating M/W, 2) M/W electrode characteristic impedance mismateching, we assume devices with 1$\mu$m thick SiO$_{2}$ buffer layer between the electrode and the Ti:LiNbO$_{3}$ substrate. The electrode analyses are performed by the FEM using the second-order triangular elements. The optimum design parameters to satisfy the phase-velocity matching and the characteristic impedance matching are sought for. By use of the analyses' results, a Mach-Zehnder optical modulator with a CPW electrode is designed as an example. the band-width estimation is also illustrated.

  • Marine facilities like buoy, lighthouse are operated with stand alone power supply system. This power system can consist of a stand-alone type power system such as PV(Photovoltaic) system, wave system or hybrid system which is not cooperated with a commercial power system. Generally, PV power system for marine facilities can not supply a sufficient power to buoy, because it is so influenced from weather condition. For solving this problem the hybrid power system with PV and wave is studied on a various area, that is why a hybrid power system is requires to overcome these problems. This paper will describe a generation characteristic of WEC(Wave Energy Converter) for buoy, and an AFS(Anti-Fouling System) influence on WEC.
