  • A structure's vibration characteristic is determined by modal property of the system. Through proper vibration analysis or experiments, the structure can be modified to reduce of vibration and noise. This paper is concerned with the natural frequency and modal loss factor of sandwich plates with viscoelastic core. The effects of shear and normal strain in the viscoelastic layer are investigated on modal properties, natural frequency and modal loss factor, by changing geometry parameter and viscoelastic material property of sandwich plates. The errors of modal parameters resulting from neglecting the extension or compression in the core material for simply supported(S-S-S-S) case are compared with those for clamped(C-C-C-C) boundary condition. Finite difference method(FDM) is utilized as numerical analysis technique of square sandwich plates for fixed boundary conditions. In order to reduce computation time and increase accuracy, improved finite difference expression with fourth order truncation error was used.

  • The main goal of this paper is to study the vibration of damaged core laminated annular plates with FG face sheets based on a three-dimensional theory of elasticity. The structures are made of a damaged isotropic core and two external face sheets. These skins are strengthened at the nanoscale level by randomly oriented Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and are reinforced at the microscale stage by oriented straight fibers. These reinforcing phases are included in a polymer matrix and a three-phase approach based on the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka scheme and on the Halpin-Tsai approach, which is developed to compute the overall mechanical properties of the composite material. In this study the effect of microcracks on the vibrational characteristic of the sandwich plate is considered. In particular, the structures are made by an isotropic core that undergoes a progressive uniform damage, which is modeled as a decay of the mechanical properties expressed in terms of engineering constants. These defects are uniformly distributed and affect the central layer of the plates independently from the direction, this phenomenon is known as "isotropic damage" and it is fully described by a scalar parameter. Three complicated equations of motion for the sectorial plates under consideration are semi-analytically solved by using 2-D differential quadrature method. Using the 2-D differential quadrature method in the r- and z-directions, allows one to deal with sandwich annular plate with arbitrary thickness distribution of material properties and also to implement the effects of different boundary conditions of the structure efficiently and in an exact manner. The fast rate of convergence and accuracy of the method are investigated through the different solved examples. The sandwich annular plate is assumed to have any arbitrary boundary conditions at the circular edges including simply supported, clamped and, free. Several parametric analyses are carried out to investigate the mechanical behavior of these multi-layered structures depending on the damage features, through-the-thickness distribution, and boundary conditions.

  • A 3-dimensional analysis is desired for a magnet of magnetically levitated vehicle because the geometrical shape of the magnet is complicated and nonsymmetric. A FEM package of FLUX3D is used to analyze the characteristic of the magnet. Various quantities could be observed like levitation force, flux density distribution along the air gap, edge and fringing effect, leakage flux pattern, etc. The simulation results from FLUX3D are compared with those of 2-D analysis and test results. There are a little difference between results due to the boundary conditions and magnetized B-H curve of the core.

  • In this paper, a liquid-filled long membrane container resting on a horizontal foundation is considered. All of the quantities are normalized to obtain similarity solutions. A system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations with undetermined boundary conditions is solved analytically. The integration of the curvature gives the solutions, which are expressed in terms of the elliptic integrals. A method for finding the shape and characteristic values is proposed for a given cross-sectional volume. The validity of these solutions is confirmed, and some results are shown for characteristic values and shapes.

  • This paper presents a theoretical approach to describe the vibration characteristics in the 1-3 piezoelectric composite arrayed on a cylindrical surface. By homogenizing the composite composed of a piezoelectric ceramic and a polymer the physically useful parameters were defined and then used to derive the governing equation of radial motion for the cylindrical 1-3 piezoelectric composite. Applying mechanical and electric boundary conditions has yielded a characteristic equation for radial vibration of the composite. Theoretical calculations of the resonance frequency have been compared with those obtained by the finite-element analysis and have shown a good agreement.

  • In recent years, the piping vibration in many Power Plants is being increased by the aged generating facilities due to a long time use. Generally, the pressure fluctuations associated with the flow-induced excitations in this case are broadband in nature. Mainly, the dominant sources of vibration are a vortex-shedding, plane waves and boundary layer turbulence. The peak level of the spectrum is proportional to the dynamic head. A severe disturbance in pipeline results in the generation of intense broadband internal sound waves which can propagate through the piping system. The characteristic frequencies of operating loads of 20%, 57%, 70%, 100% are 4 - 6 Hz and coincide with the results from impact hammering test and FEM analysis. We chose the wire energy absorbing rope restraint as a vibration reduction method after reviewing the various conditions such as site, installing space and economic cost etc. After installation, the vibration level was reduced about 54% in velocity.

  • This study is investigated into the dynamic effect of the manifold configuration during the gas exchange processes using both simulation and experiment, In theoretical study on the flow analysis, the characteristic method is applied to solve the compressible unsteady flow equation, involving the several steady flow boundary conditions. In order to excute the engine experiment efficiently, a data acquisition system is configured by using A/D converter and PC. Good results which coincided experimental data with simulation output were obtained, and it shows that this simulation method can be applied to obtain the optimal design parameters in the intake and exhaust systems.

  • The plane elastostatic boundary value problem with the sharp V-notched singularity is formulated by a contour integral method for determining numerically the stress intensity factors. The integral formula is based on Somigliana type of reciprocal work in terms of displacement and traction vectors on the plate boundary. The characteristic singular solutions can be identified on the basis of traction free boundary conditions of two radial notch edges. Two numerical example examples are treated in detail; a symmetric mode-I type of notched plate with various interior angles and a mixed mode type of cantilever subjected to end shear.

  • A study on the transitional boundary layer with arbitrary pressure gradient under various upstream conditions is very important for engineering applications like the performance predictions of the turbomachineries under various and strong disturbances. Experimental data on the transitional boundary layer for real cascades of the turbomachinery are rare because of difficulties in boundary layer experiments. Flow on NACA0012 airfoil is more similar to the real case than that on the flat plate with which many researches are done. The data of the transitional flow on the airfoil could be used to verify or to develop a turbulence model for numerical simulations. The experiment was performed with two cases of Reynolds number at a=0$^{0}$ and one case of Reynolds number at a=5$^{0}$ . The measured data are the transition length and the wall shear stresses. These two characteristic values are measured within 25%~90% of the airfoil chord by Computation Preston tube Method(CPM) proposed by Nitsche et al.(1983). At a=0$^{0}$ , transition occured at 70% and 55% of chord length when R $e_{c}$=6*10$^{5}$ and 8* 10$^{5}$ , respectively. It started when R {\theta}=500 regardless of R $e_{c}$, and ended when R {\theta}=750, and 850 respectively. The transition length was 15~20% of the chord length. At a=5$^{0}$ (R $e_{c}$=6*10$^{5}$ ), boundary layer on the pressure side does not undergo transition, but on the suction side transition occured at .chi.$_{c}$/c=0.16 and ended at .chi.$_{c}$/c=0.22.c//c=0.22./c=0.22.c//c=0.22.

  • In this paper, the flow past a rotary oscillating circular cylinder is simulated. The high-order and high-resolution numerical schemes with the characteristic boundary conditions are used for the compressible Navier-Stokes equation. The frequencies of rotating oscillation are $0.19\;{\leq}\;S_f\;{\leq}\;0.25$ for the maximum angular $\theta_{max}=10^{\circ}$ and $17^{\circ}$. The flow conditions are Mach number of 0.3 and Reynolds number of 1000. At Lock-on and Non-lock-on region which are defined by the relation between the vortex shedding frequency and the oscillating frequency, the drag and lift coefficient are analyzed.
