Recently, the pollution of groundwater has become serious. In particular, the contamination of groundwater near livestock farms is becoming increasingly severe and it is difficult to drink with drinking water. In this paper, a groundwater purifier apparatus that can be installed in a community well was designed. The designed groundwater purifier apparatus enables a RO membrane filter and UV sterilization to remove pollutants, such as heavy metals, bacteria, and organic compounds. In addition, electrical conductivity, pressure, and flow sensors were added for remote monitoring. Remote monitoring of the system can determine the level of fouling and contamination of RO membrane filters through pressure and flow sensor data, and can record changes in the contamination and condition of groundwater through the electrical conductivity of the feed water. The designed groundwater purifier apparatus was installed at a farmhouse and remote monitoring. The result after 15 days of operating a groundwater purifier apparatus and analyzing the monitoring data revealed an average permeate water flow rate of 2.67L/min and an average water pressure of 7.09kgf/㎠, indicating that the RO Membrane filtered without fouling and clogging. The average electrical conductivity was 796.6 S/㎠ of the feed water and 55.6 S/㎠ of permeate water, which is similar to that of general tap water. Through this, it was confirmed that no pollutant occurred in the surroundings. Therefore, the designed groundwater purifier apparatus can confirm the replacement time of the RO membrane filter in advance through remote monitoring, and check the pollution state of the groundwater.

This study investigates the durability of carbon/epoxy composites for use on train car bodies under a salt water spray environment. Salt water solution with 5% NaCl, similar to natural salt water, was used for the salt water environmental tests. The specimens were obtained from a composite panel consisting of an epoxy matrix reinforced with T700 carbon fabric. The specimens were exposed to the salt water environment for up to 12 months. Mechanical tests were performed to obtain tensile properties, flexural properties, and shear properties. Dynamic mechanical analysis was used to measure such thermal properties as storage modulus, loss modulus, and tan $\delta$. Also FT/IR tests were conducted to investigate changes in chemical structure with exposure. The results revealed that fiber-dominated mechanical properties were not affected much by exposure time, but matrix-dominated mechanical properties decreased with increasing exposure time. Storage modulus was not very sensitive to exposure time, but glass transition temperature was affected, slightly decreasing with increasing exposure time. Although the peak intensity of FT/IR curves was affected slightly by exposure time, the peak shape and peak location of FT/IR curves were not noticeably changed. Carbon/epoxy composites used for this study were relatively stable to the salt water environment.
Natural disasters such as floods has been increased in many parts of the world, also Korea is no exception. The biggest part of natural damage in South Korea was caused by the flooding during the rainy season in every summer. The existing flood vulnerability analysis cannot explain the reality because of the repeated changes in topography. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate a new flood vulnerability index in accordance with the changed terrain and socio-economic environment. The priority of the investment for the flood prevention and mitigation has to be determined using the new flood vulnerability index. Total 25 urban districts in Seoul were selected as the study area. Flood vulnerability factors were developed using Pressure-State-Response (PSR) structures. The Pressure Index (PI) includes nine factors such as population density and number of vehicles, and so on. Four factors such as damage of public facilities, etc. for the Status Index (SI) were selected. Finally, seven factors for Response Index (RI) were selected such as the number of evacuation facilities and financial independence, etc. The weights of factors were calculated using AHP method and Fuzzy AHP to implement the uncertainties in the decision making process. As a result, PI and RI were changed, but the ranks in PI and RI were not be changed significantly. However, SI were changed significanlty in terms of the weight method. Flood vulnerability index using Fuzzy AHP shows less vulnerability index in Southern part of Han river. This would be the reason that cost of flood mitigation, number of government workers and Financial self-reliance are high.
Background: The composition of wild bird populations in temperate zones greatly varies depending on phenological changes rather than other environmental factors. Particularly, wild birds appearing in wetlands fluctuate greatly due to the crossover of species arriving for breeding during the summer and for wintering. Therefore, to understand the changes to species composition related to phenology, we conducted this basic analysis of populations to further the cause of the protection of wetland-dependent wild birds. Methods: It is wrong to simply divide a wild bird population investigation into seasons. This study identifies species composition and indicator species that change along with seasons. Wetlands to be surveyed are protected by natural monuments and wetland inventory and are in a state close to nature. In order to identify as many species as possible in wetlands, a survey was conducted in both shallow and deep wetlands. The water depth varied in these areas, ranging from 0.2 to 2.0 m, allowing for both dabbling and diving ducks to inhabit the area. Surveys were conducted using line-transect and distance sampling methods and were conducted at intervals of 2 weeks. The survey was conducted under the following three categories: the eco-tone and emergent zone, the submergent zone, and the water surface. The survey was conducted along a wetland boundary by observing wild birds. A PC-ord program was used for clustering, and the SAS program was used to analyze the changes in species composition. The data strongly indicates that day length is the main factor for seasonal migration periods, despite the fact that climate change and increasing temperatures are often discussed. Results and conclusions: The indicator species for determining seasons include migrant birds such as Ardea cinerea, Alcedo atthis, Anas penelope, and Poiceps ruficollis, as well as resident birds such as Streptopelia orientalis and Emberiza elegans. Importantly, increases in local individual counts of these species may also serve as indicators. The survey results of seasonal fluctuations in temperate zones shows that spring (April to June), summer (July to September), autumn (October), and winter (November to March) are clearly distinguishable, even though spring and summer seasons tend to overlap, leading to the conclusion that additional research could more clearly identify fluctuation patterns in species composition and abundance in the study area.
We investigated the effects of temperature changes on the oxygen consumption rhythm in Japanese eels, Anguilla japonica, using an automatic intermittent flow respirometer (AIFR). The endogenous rhythm of the oxygen consumption rate (OCR) in the eels (n = 18; 44-74 cm, 145-690 g), freshly collected by bag net from estuaries, was nearly synchronous with the tidal pattern of the estuarine collection site. The magnitude of mean OCR (mOCR) of eels showed variable range of 82.2 - 116.5 ml $O_2\;kg^{-1}ww \;h^{-1}$ under constant conditions. In case of increasing temperature from 25 to $38^{\circ}C$, the OCR of eels exhibited a gradually increasing trend with a rhythmic pattern until $36^{\circ}C$. Above $36^{\circ}C$ the rhythms of the OCR dampened and the OCR decreased rapidly at around $36-37^{\circ}C$. The OCR of the eels exhibited the maximum value at $38^{\circ}C$, and then it sharply decreased. The results suggested that the critical thermal maximum (CTM) regarding the endogenous rhythms of the eels was at around $36-37^{\circ}C$ when water temperature increased at $0.5^{\circ}C$/14 h following the acclimation at $25^{\circ}C$. In case of decreasing temperature ($0.5^{\circ}C$/14 h) from 25 to $0^{\circ}C$, the OCR of the eels displayed a abrupt decrease up to $23^{\circ}C$, and between at 23 and $20^{\circ}C$, there was an agitation which showed a slight increase in the OCR with a duration of 1-2 days. Below $9^{\circ}C$, the OCR rhythm of the eels showed a constant state regardless of temperature decreasing. These results suggest that the Japanese eel has an upper incipient lethal temperature at $36^{\circ}C$, with a lower thermal limit at $9^{\circ}C$. The biochemical aspects of the eels influenced by water temperature need to be further studied.
Objectives : The aim of this experiment was to investigate the influences of Autonomic Nervous System and EEG by conducting Reinforcement-Reduction(補瀉) acupuncture stimulation to compare the changes in acupoints on the body before and after treatment of acupuncture at Xingjian(LR2) being referred as Fire-point(火穴) and Ququan(LR8) being referred as Water-point(水穴) of Yin Liver Meridian(足厥陰肝經). Methods : This study was carried out on 30 healthy female volunteers in their 20's. There were four tests conducted throughout and the period for each test was between 2 to 5days. HRV and EEG were measured for 5 minutes before acupuncture stimulation was conducted on LR2-Reinforcement, LR2-Reduction, LR8-Reinforcement and LR8-Reduction at random. During the 20 minutes of acupuncture treatment, same subjects were measured simultaneously to observe any significant changes in acupoints. Again, the same subjects were measured for 5 minutes after removing the acupuncture in order to perform a comparative analysis. Results : The measurement of HRV showed that LF, LFnorm and LF/HF ratio increased significantly(p<0.05) while HF, HF norm decreased significantly in case of LR2-Reinforcement & LR8-Reduction. Both LR2-Reduction and LR8-Reinforcement induced a significant increase in HFnorm. EEG measurement indicated low $\alpha$ wave decreased and high $\beta$ wave increased significantly at LR2-Reinforcement during post-acupuncture period compared with acupuncture stimulation period. Both LR2-Reduction and LR8-Reinforcement developed significantly low $\alpha$ wave and high $\alpha$ wave. High $\beta$ wave increased significantly at LR8-Reduction during the acupuncture stimulation in comparison with pre-acupuncture period. Conclusions : The manipulation of acupuncture stimulation at LR2-Reinforcement and LR8-Reduction enhanced the activity of sympathetic nerves and the state of arousal while that of para sympathetic nerves declined. On the other hand, LR2-Reduction and LR8-Reinforcement developed the levels of para sympathetic nerves and relaxation.

The article deals with the problems of application of microwave methods in systems of geoecological monitoring of natural environments and resources of the agro-industrial complex. It is noted that the methods of microwave radiometry make it possible, by the power of the measured intrinsic radio-thermal radiation of the atmosphere, when solving inverse problems using empirical and semi-empirical models, to determine such parameters of the atmosphere as thermodynamic temperature, humidity, water content, moisture content, precipitation intensity, and the presence of different fractions of clouds. In addition to assessing the meteorological parameters of the atmosphere and the geophysical parameters of the underlying surface based on the data of microwave radiometric measurements, it is possible to promptly detect and study pollution of both the atmosphere and the earth's surface. A technique has been developed for the analysis of sources of measurement error and their numerical evaluation, because they have a significant effect on the accuracy of solving inverse problems of reconstructing the values of the physical parameters of the probed media. To analyze the degree of influence of the limited spatial selectivity of the antenna of the microwave radiometric system on the measurement error, we calculated the relative measurement error of the ratio of radio brightness contrasts in two angular directions. It has been determined that in the system of geoecological monitoring of natural environments, the effect of background noise is maximal with small changes in the radiobrightness temperature during angular scanning and high sensitivity of the receiving equipment.
Wave field changes resulting from artificial coastal structures constructed in coastal zones have emerged as a major cause of beach erosion, among other factors. The rates of erosion along the eastern coast of Korea have varied mainly owing to the construction of various ports and coastal structures; however, impact assessments of these structures on beach erosion have not been appropriately conducted. Thus, in this study, a methodology to assess the impact of erosion owing to the construction of artificial structures has been proposed, for which a parabolic bay shape equation is used in determining the shoreline angle deformation caused by the structures. Assuming that the conditions of sediment or waves have similar values in most coastal areas, a primary variable impacting coastal sediment transport is the deformation of an equilibrium shoreline relative to the existing beach. Therefore, the angle rotation deforming the equilibrium of a shoreline can be the criterion for evaluating beach erosion incurred through the construction of artificial structures. The evaluation criteria are classified into three levels: safety, caution, and danger. If the angle rotation of the equilibrium shoreline is 0.1° or less, the beach distance was considered to be safe in the present study; however, if this angle is 0.35° or higher, the beach distance is considered to be in a state of danger. Furthermore, in this study, the distance affected by beach erosion is calculated in areas of the eastern coast where artificial structures, mainly including ports and power plants, were constructed; thereafter, an impact assessment of the beach erosion around these areas was conducted. Using a proposed methodology, Gungchon Port was evaluated with caution, whereas Donghae Port, Sokcho Port, and Samcheok LNG were evaluated as being in a state of danger.

This study was designed to gain practical data on the use of soil conditioners for more efficient water managements and to establish the optimum levels of structural properties for soil conditioning. A sandy loam and a silt loam soil were each treated with two different soil conditioners, hydrophobic Bitumen or hydrophilic Uresol. The perspex tube 34 cm long were packed homogeneously with air dried soil up to 2 cm below the top, then covered over 2 cm of treated or untreated aggregates. The infiltration rate into the soil columns was measured under simulated rainfall condition. The evaporation study was carried out in the wind tunnel, and the changes of soil moisture distribution of the columns following and during the evaporation were determined by a gamma ray scanner. The infiltration rate of water into the soil column was increased to 18.7-50.8% by the Uresol treatment but it was decreased to less than 25% of control by the Bitumen treatment. Evaporation was decreased to 22.0-68.1% by the Bitumen treatment and to 38.7-68.4% by the Uresol treatment. The water use efficiency of Uresol treated column was increased to more than twice as much as that of untreated soil. Aggregate stability and wetting angle were related to water infiltration and evaporation. A positive and highly significant logarismic relationship was found between the infiltration rate and stability index-wetting angle, evaporation rate and instability index-wetting angle. It was considered that the structural stability is more important than wetting angle. This is true because the structural stability is always positively correlated to water saving, however wettability is positively correlated to the infiltration, and negatively correlated to water saving during the evaporation.

This study examines the potential restoration of abandoned channels of the Mangyeong River in South Korea. To analyze the morphological changes and equilibrium conditions, a flow duration analysis was performed to obtain the discharge of 255 m3/s with a recurrence interval of 1.5 year. It is a gravel-bed stream with a median bed diameter of 36 mm. The reach-averaged results using HEC-RAS showed that the top width is 244 m, the mean flow depth is 1.11 m, the width/depth ratio is very high at 277, the channel velocity is 1.18 m/s, and the Froude number is also high at 0.42. The hydraulic parameters vary in the vicinity of the three sills which control the bed elevation. The total sediment load is 6,500 tons per day and the equivalent sediment concentration is 240 mg/l. The Engelund-Hansen method was closer to the field measurements than any other method. The bed material coarser than 33 mm will not move. The methods of Julien-Wargadalam and Lacey gave an equilibrium channel width of 83 m and 77 m respectively, which demonstrates that the Mangyeong River is currently very wide and shallow. The planform geometry for the Mangyeong River is definitely straight with a sinuosity as low as 1.03. The thalweg and mean bed elevation profiles were analyzed using field measurements in 1976, 1993 and 2009. The measured profiles indicated that the channel has degraded about 2 m since 1976. The coarse gravel material and large width-depth ratio increase the stability of the bed material in this reach.
