New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), in collaboration with the University of Hawaii (UH), is upgrading Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) by replacing its principal, 65 cm aperture telescope with a modern, off-axis 1.6 m clear aperture instrument from a 1.7 m blank. The new telescope offers a significant incremental improvement in ground-based infrared and high angular resolution capabilities, and enhances our continuing program to understand photospheric magneto-convection and chromospheric dynamics. These are the drivers for what is broadly called space weather - an important problem, which impacts human technologies and life on earth. This New Solar Telescope (NST) will use the existing BBSO pedestal, pier and observatory building, which will be modified to accept the larger open telescope structure. It will be operated together with our 10 inch (for larger field-of-view vector magnetograms, Ca II K and Ha observations) and Singer-Link (full disk H$\alpha$, Ca II K and white light) synoptic telescopes. The NST optical and software control design will be similar to the existing SOLARC (UH) and the planned Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST) facility led by the National Solar Observatory (NSO) - all three are off-axis designs. The NST will be available to guest observers and will continue BBSO's open data policy. The polishing of the primary will be done in partnership with the University of Arizona Mirror Lab, where their proof-of-concept for figuring 8 m pieces of 20 m nighttime telescopes will be the NST's primary mirror. We plan for the NST's first light in late 2005. This new telescope will be the largest aperture solar telescope, and the largest aperture off-axis telescope, located in one of the best observing sites. It will enable new, cutting edge science. The scientific results will be extremely important to space weather and global climate change research.
Detection and processing techniques for small objects on seabed by the active synthetic aperture sonar can be increased the detection performance because it can be used by short sensor array in small unmanned underwater systems that are spatially constrained. But the limited conditions on constant speed and straight movement of the platform cause a large error in the number of external environmental factors and exact phase synthesis process. In this study, analyzed the applicability of active synthetic aperture processing that is mounted on such a system, and compared detection resolution change in accordance with the phase difference mismatch caused by the along track disturbance. Various simulations were performed as a coherently focus processing model by adding along track disturbance mismatched parameter on the configuring simulator. As the result, detection performance of active synthetic processing for small objects on seabed was found a number of changes by the phase difference mismatch errors according to track disturbances and S/N ratio variations.
In the constructed auto-stereoscopic display system for one observer. 1.stereoscopic images displayed on a special LCD are made on a large concave mirror. 2.The view-zone limiting aperture is set between the projection lens and the concave mirror. 3.The real image of the aperture is made at the observer's eye position by the concave mirror. 4.The observer's eye-position tracking of the view-zone is realized. 5.At same time, stereoscopic image changes automatically according to the eye position of the observer.

We have simulated the effect of fracture characteristics on reduction of effective permeability of the fractured rocks due to in-situ bacteria growth. A nutrient is injected continuously for growth of in-situ bacteria. We used a power law for fracture length distribution and a fBm for fracture aperture spatial distribution. The results show that in-situ bacteria growth reduces the Permeability hyperbolically, but the porosity of backbone fracture does not change significantly. It shows that reduction of the permeability proceeds at faster speed for smaller value of length exponent(a) and for larger value of Hurst exponent(H). The fracture length distribution has stronger effect on speed of reduction than the aperture spatial distribution. The time needed to reduce permeability is inversely proportional to the hydraulic gradient.

Optical monitoring using the chromatic aberration of focusing optics is applied to auto-focus control in laser welding. The spectral transmittance of thermal radiation from a weld pool through an aperture depends on the wavelength of the spectral band and on the distance of the weld pool from the focusing optics. Its dependence has been used to monitor the focus shift in laser welding by measuring the spectral band signals filtered by the aperture. The difference between pulsed and continuous laser welding is analyzed. Furthermore, the dependence of the focus shift monitoring on the weld pool size variation is optimized to monitor the focus shift independently from the laser power change at the weld pool. The performance of the auto-focus control with chromatic filtering is presented for pulsed laser welding.

Discrete joint network approach has widely been used to investigate the hydraulic behavior of jointed rock masses. In general, joints will undergo deformation due to stress redistribution induced by construction of underground openings, hence joint aperture is often assumed to have a probability distribution rather than to be a constant value. In real situations, however, it is more reasonable to take into account the effect of stress change on aperture values by calculating joint deformation. In this report, a mechanical process has been developed to determine the joint opening or closure based on a statistically generated joint network model. By performing numerical analyses, some significant results on the hydro-mechanical behavior of jointed rock masses have been summarized.

The remote sensing technique using SAR data have many advantages when applied to the disaster site due to its wide coverage and all-weather acquisition availability. Although a single-pol (polarimetric) SAR image cannot represent the land surface better than a quad-pol SAR image can, single-pol SAR data are worth using for disaster-induced change detection. In this paper, an automatic change detection method based on a mixture of GGDs (generalized Gaussian distribution) is proposed, and usability of the textural features and intensity is evaluated by using the proposed method. Three ALOS/PALSAR images were used in the experiments, and the study site was Norita City, which was affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. The experiment results showed that the proposed automatic change detection method is practical for disaster sites where the large areas change. The intensity information is useful for detecting disaster-induced changes with a 68.3% g-mean, but the texture information is not. The autocorrelation and correlation show the interesting implication that they tend not to extract agricultural areas in the change detection map. Therefore, the final tsunami-induced change map is produced by the combination of three maps: one is derived from the intensity information and used as an initial map, and the others are derived from the textural information and used as auxiliary data.
The interferometric correlation, or coherence, is calculated to measure the variance of the interferometric phase and amplitude within the neighbourhood of any location within the image at a result of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) interferometric process which utilizes the phase information of the images. The coherence contains additional information that is useful for detecting point targets which change their location in an area of interest (AOI). In this research, a RGB colour composite image was generated with a intensity image (master image), a intensity change image as a difference between master image and slave image, and a coherence image generated as a part of SAR interferometric processing. We developed a technique performing detection of a point target movement using SAR interferometry and applied it to suitable tandem pair images of ERS-1 and ERS-2 as test data. The possibility of change detection of a point target in the AOI could be identified with the technique proposed in this research.

We analyzed electrostatic lens with axi-symmetic configurations using the analytic equation for a single apertured lens. The developed computer code afforded to estimate ion optical properties such as ion trajectories, aberrations and ion beam diameters, and was found to have advantages of a shorter calculation time. The calculated ion optical properties for several types of electrostatic lens were in good agreement with Burghard's ones and it was seem that 20% reduction of ion beam diameter could be obtained by the change of aperture diameters.
WIPS is a plasma device which has a wire anode, a coaxially-set cylindrical cathode, and aperture electrodes located in both ends of the cylinder. This electrode configuration forces the potential between the anode and the cathode to change logarithmically with radial direction. Since electrons are confined this logarithmic potential, the high-density plasma is produced even at a rather low anode voltage. In this paper we investigate characteristics of dc and pulse discharges, in which
