It was proposed that technologies derived from CAD-CAM and computed tomography may be useful for flapless implant treatment procedures. The aims of this study were to validate the reliability of this concept in a prospective 12-month clinical study. Twelve patients with fully edentulous areas in their mandibles were included in this study. A total of 71 implants were inserted in interforaminal regions by use of a CAD/CAM drill template($NobelGuide^{TM}$), specially designed for flapless implant surgery. To assess the degree of pain and discomfort, the patients were examined at 2 days and 1 week after surgery. Patient satisfaction and implant functionality were further evaluated at follow-up intervals of 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. One implant failed early in 1 patient. All of the other implants were in a good functional state throughout the study. The mean marginal bone loss after 1 year of follow-up was 0.3 mm (SD, 0.1) at center, 0.5 mm (SD, 0.1) at canine and 0.7 mm (SD, 0.2) at distal fixtures, respectively. Statistically, there was not significant differences among each sites(P>.05)The mean ISQ change after 1 year of follow-up was -1.05 (SD, 2.76) at center, -0.85 (SD, 2.59) at canine and -1.27 (SD, 2.18) at distal fixtures, respectively. This prospective pilot study showed that the use of CAD/CAM technology and flapless implant surgery may be considered reliable for fully edentulous mandible of patients.
Full-mouth rehabilitation with increasing vertical dimension can be used for patients with severely worn teeth. In severely worn teeth also, the alveolar process can be elongated to compensate for the reduced vertical dimension, and the patient's vertical dimension of occlusion can be kept constant. However, full-mouth rehabilitation with increasing vertical dimension must be carefully chosen, because the vertical dimension can be reduced by tooth wear. It is important to establish a treatment plan with the systematic diagnosis of the change in the vertical dimension and gain space for the prosthesis. It is necessary to change the vertical dimension to secure the restoration space and select the minimum vertical dimension elevation for the esthetic and functional goal. In this case report, the patient complained of difficulty during chewing due to a worn dentition and wanted esthetic improvement of the short mandibular anterior teeth. After systematic evaluation and diagnosis, we performed full-mouth rehabilitation with minimum vertical dimension elevation to obtain the space for restoration. This resulted in a stable and harmonious occlusion, and the functional and esthetic problems of the patient were solved after treatment. The patient was satisfied with the results of the treatment and maintained stable occlusion during the follow-up period.

The author analysed the bone changes, the positional relationships between condylar head and articular fossa, and the interrelationship between the bone changes and the abnormal position of condylar head, from 1,036 radiographs of 259 patients with temporomandibular joint arthrosis, which were obtained by the oblique-lateral transcranial projection and orthopantomograms. The results were as follows: 1. Among the radiographic bone changes of the temporomandibular joint arthrosis, deformity was 36.90%(217 case), sclerosis 34.18% (20 cases), errosive chang 25.85% (152 cases) and marginal proliferation 3.06% (18 cases) respectively. 2. In the positional changes between condylar head and articular fossa, the downward positioning of condylar head in centric occlusion was most frequent(36.90%), of which frequency was signifiantly higher than forward positioning (11.22%) and backward positioning(4.76%) in same condition. Also, radiographs showed that the enlargement of articular space showed higher frequency than its narrowing. In the opening position of mouth, the restricted movement of condylar head within articular fossa was most frequent(35.03%). The forward positioning and the downward positioning was 15.65% and 9.52% respectively. Also, radiographs revealed that the incomplete movement or no positional change of condylar head was most frequent. 3. In the interrelationship between bone changes and abnormal position of condylar head, deformity was 42.79% in the cases of downward positioning of condylar head in centric occlusion and 37.50% in those of normal positioning of condylar head in same condition. This revealed that deformity was most frequent bone change in above condylar positionings. However, erossive change was 34.62% in the cases of downward positioning of condylar head in centric occlusion and 33.33% in those of forward positioning. In opening position of condylar head, and deformity in the cases of normal positioning, forward positioning and downward positioning of condylar head was 38.38%, 36.96% and 44.64% respectively. 4. Bone changes of condylar head was 47.11%, articular eminence 41.50% and articular fossa 11.39% respectively. This revealed that the frequencies of bone changes. were higher in the projected portion of bony structures of temporomandibular joint than their depressed portions. On the otherhand, in the bone changes of condylar head, deformity was 59.57% which was the most frequent. In the bone changes of articular eminence and articular fossa, however, sclersis was 41.39% and 65.67% respectively, which was the most frequent in those portions.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the growth changes of ODI and APDI with age on the three facial growth patterns. The biennial serial cephalometric radiographs of 19 male and 14 famale samples with normal occlusion during 10 years were used in this study. The samples were divided into three groups - drop type, neutral type, forward type - by the total change of the Y-axis during the periods of the study. The findings in this investigation indicated the following: 1. The mean values and standard deviations of each age group in each facial type of male and famale were obtained. 2. The difference of ODI and APDI among the 3 facial types was not significant through all observed ages(P)0.05). The size of ODI appeared large consistently in order of the drop, neutral, and forward type in both male and female through all observed ages. 3. The ODI and APDI were maintained without any charges with age during the periods of the study(p>0.05). 4. In correlation analysis between the total change of the Y-axis and 6 measurements, the AB plane angle and facial angle showed correlation in both male and female(p<0.05), the APDl in only female(p<0.001), but the ODI not appeared correlation in either male or female(p>0.05).

Objective : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of bilateral chewing exercise applied for 6 weeks on occlusion force and masseter muscle thickness in the elderly living in the community. Methods : This study recruited 25 community residents. All participants performed bilateral chewing exercise using equipment developed for the purpose of oral chewing exercise. The chewing exercise was divided into isometric and isotonic type and applied for about 20 minutes a day, five times a week for six weeks. For the evaluation, the masseter muscle thickness and the maximum occlusion force were measured three times at three week intervals using a portable ultrasound instrument and an occlusion force gauge. Results : As a result of the change in masseter muscle thickness, baseline, 3 weeks later, and 6 weeks later referred to 7.51±0.43, 7.63±0.44, and 7.83±0.46, respectively (F=3.819, p<.05). The post hoc test resulted in a significance between baseline and 6 weeks later (p=0.023). Similarly, as a result of the change in occlusion force, baseline, 3 weeks later, and 6 weeks later referred to 265±9.22, 268±9.57, and 271.59±10.16, respectively (F=3.031, p<.05). The post hoc test resulted in a significance between baseline and 6 weeks later (p=0.048). Conclusion : This study confirmed that bilateral chewing exercise was effective for increasing masseter muscle thickness and occlusion force in the elderly. Therefore, bilateral chewing exercise can be applied as a therapeutic exercise method for improving oral function.
Various conditions such as pain or effusion of temporomandibular joint, degenerative condylar resorption, and articular disc displacement can be a cause of malocclusion. However, the reasons of occlusal changes are ambiguous in some patients. Unexpected occlusal change in patients with or without temporomandibular disorder (TMD) symptom was mostly caused by masticatory muscular disorders. This article reports two cases of recovery of occlusal relationship in TMDs patients after stabilization splint therapy. Stabilization splint therapy could be useful in certain conditions of occlusal changes in TMD.

This paper describes a shape matching algorithm for occluded or distorted two-dimensional objects. In our approach, the shape matchin is viewed as a segment matching problem. A shape matching algorithm, based on both the stochastic labeling technique and the hypothesis generate-test paradigm, is proposed, and a simple technique which performs the stochastic labeling process in accordance with the definition of consisten labeling assignment without requiring an iterative updating process of probability valiues is also proposed. Several simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is very effective when occlusion, scaling or change of orientation has occurred in the object.

Unlike aerial images covering small region, satellite data show high potential to detect urban scale geospatial changes. The change detection using satellite images can be carried out using single image or stereo images. The single image approach is based on radiometric differences between two images of different times. It has limitations to detect building level changes when the significant occlusion and relief displacement appear in the images. In contrast, stereo satellite data can be used to generate DSM (Digital Surface Model) that contain information of relief-corrected objects. Therefore, they have high potential for the object change detection. Therefore, we carried out a study for the change detection over an urban area using stereo satellite data of two different times. First, the RPC correction was performed for two DSMs generation via stereo image matching. Then, D-DSM (Differential DSM) was generated by differentiating two DSMs. The D-DSM was used for the topographic change detection and the performance was checked by applying different height thresholds to D-DSM.
Objectives : The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate the effects of Woohwangcheongsim-won on reperfusion following MCA occlusion in rats. Methods : To evaluate the effect of Woohwangcheongsim-won on reperfusion following MCA occlusion, the volume of cerebral ischemia and edema were measured and the change of the CAI pyramidal neuron in the hippocampus was investigated by light microscopy. And the changes of several neurotransmitters and enzymes were investigated with the immunohistochemical methods. Results : 1. The volume of the control group, which was ischemic-damaged was 23.6%, and that of the sample group was 13.5%. 2. The voluminalratio of the right/left hemisphere was 116 in the control group, and that of the sample group was 107. 3. The pyramidal cells of CAI area in the control group were greatly damaged. The cells were changed into discontinuous and unsystematic forms, and nuclei, and cytoplasms were shrunk. On the other hand, the cells of the sample group were less damaged. 4. On the immunohistochemical methods, the sensitivities of GABA, NOS, DBH in the control group were increased, and those of synapsin and $eEF-l{\alpha}$ were decreased as compared with the normal group. NOS and DBH which were negative in the normal group showed positive reaction. On the other hand, the sensitivities of GABA, NOS and DBH in the sample group were decreased, but those of NPY, synapsin, CaMKII and $eEF-l{\alpha}$ were increased as compared with the control group. Conclusions : Woohwangcheongsim-won reduced the volume of cerebral ischemia and edema, and minimized the damage of pyramidal cells. The mechanism was related to protein synthesis, such as synapsin, ${\alpha}CaMKII$ and $eEF-l{\alpha}$, which resist neurotoxicity of glutamate receptors.
Objectives : This study was undertaken to prove the effect of GSHT on the glutamate receptor, free radical and brain damage in rats subjected to brain ischemia Methods : Levels of cultured cortical neuron death caused by toxic chemicals were measured by LDH release assay. Neuroprotective effects of GSHT on brain tissues were examined in vivo by ischemic model of middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion. Results : GSHT showed significant inhibitory effect on LDH release induced by NMDA-kinate-Fe/sup 2+/. GSHT remarkably decreased coma duration time in a nonfatal dose of KCN and showed higher survival rate in a fatal dose. GSHT remarkably decreased ischemic area and edema induced by the MCA blood flow block. GSHT showed high improvement of forelimb and hind limb test after MCA occlusion in neurological examination. GSHT showed no significant change after MCA occlusion in pathological observation of the normal group. Conclusions : These results indicate that GSHT can be used to treat the brain damage caused by brain ischemia. Further study will be needed about the functional mechanism, etc.
