  • Schemes for detecting and diagnosing faults are presented. Faults are detected when residuals change significantly and thresholds are exceed. Two stage artificial neural networks are applied to diagnose faults. The idealized steady state patterns of residuals are defined and learned by ANNs using back propagation algorithm. The first stage ANN is trained to classify the subsystem in which the various faults are located. The first stage ANN could be also used to detect faults with threshold, checking. The second stage ANNs are trained to discriminate the specific cause of a fault at the subsystem level.

Effect of internal Stress on the Strength of PZT Cermics (PZT 세라믹스의 강도에 미치는 내부응력의 영향)

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the change of bending strength and fatigue strength in the unpoled and poled Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 ferroelectrics of tetragonal morphotropic phase boundary (MPM) and rhombohedral com-position in terms of internal stress which is measured by XRD method. Before poling treatment the highest bending strength was found in rhombohedral composition. After poling treatment the bending strength decreas-ed in all compositions but it decreased most remarkably in tetragonal composition. The most prominent de-crease of bending strength after poling treatment in tetragonal was attributed to the occurrence of microcracks due to highanisotropic internal stress around grain boundary which was induced of bending strength after poling in MPB and rhombohedral composition was not due to the occurrence of microcracks but to the increase in tensile internal stress perpendicular to the direction of crack propagation by domain alignment. Fatigue strength was higher before poling treatment than after poling treatment for various compositions.

Ventilation Effects on Smoke Behavior in Rescue Station for Tunnel Fires (철도터널 화재시 구난역 내의 연기거동에 미치는 배연효과에 관한 수치연구)

  • The present study investigates the ventilation effects on smoke spreading characteristics in railway tunnels with the rescue stations. Experiments were carried out for n-heptane pool fires with a square length 4 cm at different fire locations, and the heat release rates (HRR) were obtained by the measurement of burning rates. In addition, using the commercial code (FLUENT), the present article presents numerical results for smoke behavior in railway tunnels with rescue station, and it uses the MVHS (Modified Volumetric Heat Source) model for estimation of combustion products resulting from the fire source determined from the HRR measurement. As a result, it is found that smoke propagation is prevented successfully by the fire doors located inside the cross-passages and especially, the smoke behavior in the accident tunnel can be controlled through the ventilation system because of substantial change in smoke flow direction in the cross-passages.

  • In light microscopy, spatial resolution is limited by diffraction effect. Confocal microscopy has improved resolutions in both lateral and axial directions, but these are still limited by diffraction effect. Confocal self-interference microscopy (CSIM) uses interference between two perpendicularly polarized beams to enhance lateral resolution. In previous research, we proposed a calcite plate with its optic-axis perpendicular to the propagation angle and one of the boundary surfaces of the plate. This type of plate is not widely used to our knowledge. In this paper, we change the calcite plate to more common one, which is commercially available. This calcite plate has its optic axis in the plane of incidence. We analyze the characteristics of this calcite plate and numerically compare the performances of CSIM in previous research and CSIM with the commercial calcite plate. Application of Neural Network Precompensated PID Controller for Load Frequency Control of Power Systems (전력계통의 부하주파수 제어를 위한 신경회로망 전 보상 PID 제어기 적용)

  • In this paper we propose a neural network precompensated PID(NNP PID) controller for load frequency control of 2-area power system. While proportional integral derivative(PID) controllers are used in power system they have many problems because of high nonlinearities of the power system So a neural network-based precompensation scheme is adopted into a conventional PID controller to obtain a robust control to the nonlinearities. The applied neural network precompen-sator uses an error back-propagation learning algorithm having error and change of error as inputand considers the changing component of forward term of weighting factor for reducing of learning time. Simulation results show that the proposed control technique is superior to a conventional PID controller and an optimal controller in dynamic responses about load disturbances. The pro-posed technique can be easily implemented by adding a neural network precompensator to an existing PID controller.

  • The important issue for intra-city truck dispatching system is to measure and store actual travel speeds between customer locations. Travel speeds(and times) in nearly all metropolitan areas change drastically during the day because of congestion in certain parts of the city road network. We propose a back-propagation neural network model to recognize the pattern of intra-city vehicle travel speeds between locations that relieve much burden for the data collection and computer storage requirements. On a real-world study using the travel speed data[1] collected in Seoul, we evaluate performance of neural network model and compare with Park & Song model[2] that employs the least square method.

  • Recently, fatigue problem become a critical issue in the design of prestressed concrete bridges due to the increase of traffic volumes and use of high-strength materials. Most existing studies are mainly concerned with the fatigue behavior of component materials only such as concrete, reinforcing bars, and prestressing steels and few studies exist that deals with the fatigue behavior of bridge members. An improved analytic formulation for both uncracked and cracked prestressed concrete composite section with cyclic creep effect is developed to take into account the change of neutral axis with crack propagation. The procedure also enables to investigate serviceability limit states, deflection and crack width. The present study allows more realistic analysis and design of prestressed concrete composite girder bridges under fatigue loadings.

  • The time of the onset of double-diffusive convection in time-dependent, nonlinear concentration fields is investigated theoretically. The initially quiescent horizontal fluid layer with a uniform temperature gradient experiences a sudden concentration change from below, but its stable thermal stratification affects concentration effects in such way to invoke convective motion. The related stability analysis, including Soret effect, is conducted on the basis of the propagation theory. Under the linear stability theory the concentration penetration depth is used as a length scaling factor, and the similarity transform for the linearized perturbation equations. The newlly obtained stability equations are solved numerically. The resulting critical time to mark the onset of regular cells are obtained as a function of the thermal Rayleigh number, the solute Rayleigh number, and the Soret effect coefficient. For a certain value of the Soret effect coefficient, the stable thermal gradient promote double-diffusive convective motion.

  • The aiming ability is a key to improve the accuracy performance of the gun pointing system in the ground military vehicle. This paper describes the new detection method of chatter vibration using disturbance acceleration in the pointing structure. In order to analysis the vibration trends of the pointing system occurred while the vehicle driving, acceleration data obtained from vehicle was processed by using data processing algorithm with moving average and Hilbert transform. The specific mode constants of acceleration were obtained from various disturbances. Vehicle velocity, road condition and property of pointing structure were considered as factors which make the change of vibration trend in vehicle dynamics. Finally, back propagation neural networks have been applied to the pattern recognition of the classification of vibration signal in various driving conditions. Results of signal processing were compared with other condition result and analysed.

  • Recently, the steel parts used for automobiles and trains are required to be used under higher stress than ever before in need of the weight down. In this study, high strength and superior toughness spring steels as the suspension material, used for automobile and railroad industries were utilized to carry out the following in vestigations; 1) To evaluate the characteristics of fatigue crack propagation, the experiments of fatigue crack growth were respectively carried out at the room temperature(RT), $100^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$ 2) Peening and unpeening materials at the each temperature were investigated for the effect on fracture toughness by compressive residual stress generated from the shot peeing.
