  • In this paper we present new sound spectral analysis methods or prosthetic heart valve sounds. Phonocardiograms(PCG) of prosthetic heart valve were analyzed in order to derive frequency domain feature suitable or the classification of the valve state. The fast orthogonal search method and MUSIC (MUltiple SIgnal Classification) method are described or finding the significant frequencies in PCG. The fast orthogonal search method is effective with short data records and cope with noisy, missing and unequally-spaced data. MUSIC method's key to the performance is the division of the information in the autocorrelation matrix or the data matrix into two vector subspaces, one a signal subspace and the other a noise subspace.

  • A new Complex Image Method based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed to calculate the Green's functions of CPW (coplanar waveguide)-type microwave components and antennas. The closed-forms of the spectral-domain integrals are obtained by the GA, avoiding the conventional procedures of the tedious linear algebra and the sampling conditions sensitive to the complex-variable sampling paths adopted in the Prony's and GPOF methods. The proposed method is compared with the numerical Sommerfeld Integral, which results in good agreement.

  • In statistical computing, it is often for researchers to need the distribution of a weighted sum of noncentral chi-square variables. In this case, it is very limited to know its exact distribution. There are many works to contribute to this topic, e.g. Imhof (1961) and Solomon-Stephens (1977). Imhof's method gives good approximation to the true distribution, but it is not easy to apply even though we consider the development of computer technology Solomon-Stephens's three moment chi-square approximation is relatively easy and accurate to apply. However, they skipped many details, and their simulation is limited to a weighed sum of central chi-square random variables. This paper gives details on Solomon-Stephens's method. We also extend their simulation to the weighted sum of non-central chi-square distribution. We evaluated approximated powers for homogeneous test and compared them with the true powers. Solomon-Stephens's method shows very good approximation for the case.

  • The present study is concerned with a simple numerical method for estimating the hindered settling velocity of noncolloidal suspensions with bidisperse size distribution of particles. The method is based on an effective-medium theory which uses the conditional ensemble averages for describing the velocity fields or other physical quantities of interest in the suspension system with the particles randomly placed. The effective-medium theory originally developed by Acrivos and Chang[1] for monodisperse suspensions is modified for the bidisperse case. Using the radial distribution functions and stream functions the hindered settling velocity of the suspended particles is calculated numerically. The predictions by the present method are compared with the previous experimental results by Davis and Birdsell[2] and Cheung et al.[3]. It is shown that the estimations by the effective-medium model of the present study reasonably agree with the experimental results.

  • The aim of this study is to develop and evaluate an efficient camera calibration method for vision-based head tracking. Tracking head movements is important in the design of an eye-controlled human/computer interface. A vision-based head tracking system was proposed to allow the user's head movements in the design of the eye-controlled human/computer interface. We proposed an efficient camera calibration method to track the 3D position and orientation of the user's head accurately. We also evaluated the performance of the proposed method. The experimental error analysis results showed that the proposed method can provide more accurate and stable pose (i.e. position and orientation) of the camera than the conventional direct linear transformation method which has been used in camera calibration. The results of this study can be applied to the tracking head movements related to the eye-controlled human/computer interface and the virtual reality technology.

  • A numerical simulation was made to determine the motion of particles in the fluid. The simulation is based on the Eulerian-Lagrangian method. The fluid motion was solved using a PISO-based finite-element method and a $\kappa-\epsilon$ model of turbulence. In the Lagrangian method for the solid phase, the trajectories of particles are calculated by integrating the equations of motion of a single Particle, and the collision between particles are taken into account. The influence of particles on the fluid phase is taken into account by introducing source terms in the Eulerian equations govering the fluid flow. It is known as the particle-source-in-cell (PSIC) method. Also, the turbulent effect in the particles and fluid notion is considered. The numerical results were compared with the experiment for a two-phase flow in a vertical pipe.

  • Magnetic coupling is used where required high reliability. because magnetic coupling's durability is stronger than mechanical coupling's durability. This paper shows the characteristics of radially magnetized tubular type magnetic coupling by using Analytical method such as space harmonic method. Analytical method was used, to find force characteristics. First, on the basis of the magnetic vector potential and two-dimensional(2-D) polar-coordinate system, the magnetic field solutions of the radially magnetized permanent magnet are obtained. And we obtain the analytical solutions for the flux density produced by permanent magnet. Finally, we can calculate the force by using the Maxwell stress tensor. And then, Finite element method(FEM) is used to validate force characteristics.

  • This paper proposes the novel investment priority decision method for distribution facilities considering the potential failure rate and the influence of customer caused by faults in distribution networks. The Proposed method decides the investment priority of the facilities combining, by the fuzzy rules, the KEPCO's priority decision for investment and the priority decision considering SAIFI(System Average Interruption Frequency Index) and SAIDI(System Average Interruption Duration Index). To verify the performance of the proposed method, these works utilized the projects for weak facility reinforcement planned in KEPCO in the Busan region in 2003 and 2004. The evaluation results showed that the reliability of the KEPCO in the Busan region using the proposed method can be enhanced more than using the conventional KEPCO's method.
