Selection of Salinity Tolerant Lines by Establishment of Salt Screening Techniques at Rice Seedling Stage (벼 유묘내염성 검정체계 확립에 의한 내염성 계통 선발)

  • This study was conducted in order to breed Japonica salt tolerant rice and select salinity tolerant lines by establishing reliable and practical method of screening voluminous materials. Salinized nutrient solution by adding NaCl was effective compared with the salinized nutrient solution by adding 0.3%, 0.6% and 0.7% of diluted sea water. There was no different visual score of salinity injury between salinization using tap water and distilled water. Seedling salinity tolerant lines between region and order by year were showed very stable and reproducible results, 3~4.2 of visual score at Gyehwado-substation and International Rice Research Institute (IRRI, Philippines) in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Heading date of 6 selected seedling salt tolerant lines showed a range of 16. Aug.~21. Aug. and delayed 2~6 days than that of Donjinbyeo. Percentage of ripened grain and yield of milled rice in 6 lines was lower, 52.2~14.7% and 50~5%, respectively than those of Donjinbyeo.

Effects of Plant Growth Regulators on Haploid Production of Wheat (밀 반수체 생산에서 식물생장조절제의 영향)

  • The introduction of doubled haploid (DH) approach into breeding programs has reduced the times and population sizes required for the production of pure lines. We carried out the experiment for development on effective method of producing haploid in wheat. Emasculated spikelets of wheat were pollinated with maize pollen and cultured in the solution containing 40 g/L sucrose and 2,4-D, NAA, 2,4,5-T and dicamba 24 h after pollination, and then incubated until embryo rescue. Fourteen to sixteen days after pollination, the embryos are excised and cultured in half-strength MS basal medium supplemented with 20 g/L sucrose and 1 mg/L NAA. The type of plant growth regulators was found to be most significant in production of haploid plants. The application of synthetic auxins to pollinated florets, stimulates haploid embryo development to a stage where the embryos can be rescued onto nutrient media. The percentage of seeded florets was significantly affected by 100 mg/L 2,4-D, 150 mg/L 2,4,5-T and 50 mg/L dicamba. The percentage of embryos formed was significantly increased by treatment with 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T at 100 mg/L, and dicamba at 50 mg/L, but the treatments with 150 mg/L 2,4-D inhibited embryo development and plant regeneration. The optimum application time of plant growth regulators was 24 hrs after pollination.

'Gwanghan', A New Forage Winter Oat Cultivar for the Mid-Southern Regions of Korea (중남부지역 적응 내한 다수 조사료용 월동귀리 신품종 '광한')

  • 'Gwanghan' (Avena sativa L.), a winter oat for forage use, was developed by the breeding team at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA in 2009. It was derived from a cross between 'Early80' and 'Gwiri23'. A parent, 'Early80', has early heading and high yielding, while Gwiri23 has mid-heading with large-size grain. Subsequent generations followed by the cross were handled in bulk and pedigree selection programs at Suwon and Yeoncheon, respectively. A line, 'SO96016-B-112-YB-12-7', was selected for earliness, cold tolerance, and good agronomic characteristics and designated as a line name of 'Gwiri64'. The line was subsequently evaluated for cold tolerance, earliness, and forage yield in four different locations, Yesan, Iksan, Kimjae, and Jeju, from 2007 to 2009, and finally named as 'Gwanghan'. Over 3 years, the average forage dry matter yield of 'Gwanghan' harvested at milk-ripe stage was $16.4MT\;ha^{-1}$, compared with $15.4MT\;ha^{-1}$ of check cultivar 'Samhan'. 'Gwanghan's' heading date is about 3 days earlier than that of check cultivar, and is adapted primarily for winter cultivation in the mid-southern regions of Korean peninsula.

'Jopung', A New Forage Winter Oat Cultivar for the Southern Regions of Korea (남부지역 적응 조숙 다수 조사료용 월동귀리 신품종 '조풍')

Subsequent generations followed by the cross were handled in bulk and pedigree selection programs at Suwon and Yeoncheon, respectively. A line, 'SO99006-B-YB-29-Y1', was selected for earliness and good agronomic characteristics and designated as a line name of 'Gwiri65'. The line 'Gwiri65' was subsequently evaluated for earliness and forage yield in four different locations, Yesan, Iksan, Kimjae, and Jeju, from 2007 to 2009 and finally named as 'Jopung'. Over 3 years, the average forage dry matter yield of cultivar 'Jopung' harvested at milk-ripe stage was $17.3MT\;ha^{-1}$, compared with $13.6MT\;ha^{-1}$ of check cultivar 'Swan'. The silage quality of 'Jopung' was superior to the check cultivar 'Swan' in crude protein content, and was similar to the check cultivar in percent total digestible nutrients (TDN). Cultivar 'Jopung' is suitable primarily for winter planting in the southern regions of Korean peninsula.

It was derived from a cross between 'Beltsville 61-150 (IT133501)' and $F_1$ between 'Sikyonggwiri' and 'PA202-210'. A oat cultivar from USA, 'Beltsville 61-150', has a high cold tolerance, while the $F_1$ between 'Sikyonggwiri' and 'PA202-210' has early heading and high yielding with large-size grain. Subsequent enerations followed by the cross were handled in bulk and pedigree selection programs at Suwon and Yeoncheon, respectively. A line, 'SO99013-B-YB-31', was selected for earliness and good agronomic characteristics and designated as a line name of 'Gwiri 60'. The line 'Gwiri 60' was subsequently evaluated for winter hardiness, earliness, and forage yield in five locations, Yesan, Cheongwon, Iksan, Kimjae, and Jeju, from 2006 to 2008 and finally named as 'Punghan'. Over 3 years, the average forage dry matter yield of 'Punghan' harvested at milk-ripe stage was $14.5\;ton\;ha^{-1}$, compared with $13.6\;ton\;ha^{-1}$ of check cultivar 'Samhan'. 'Punghan' is about 2 days earlier in heading date than check cultivar. 'Punghan' is adapted primarily for winter planting use in the mid-southern regions of Korean peninsula.

  • Lee, Bae Ham, Rha, Min Keun and Choi, Tae joo (Dept. of Biology, Kon Kuk University). Identification of the causal organism of cereal scab in Korea. Kor. J. Microbiol. Vol. 2, No. 1, p. 25-27 (1964) Head blight or scab occurred in barley, wheat, rye and some other cereals widely in this country during the spring of 1963. The causal organisms were collected from 34local areas and isolated purely. All isolates identified as Gibberella zeae (Schw.) Petch. and Fusarium graminearum Schw. as conidial stage.

  • Cereal production and utilization in Australia are described briefly. Emphasis is on wheat which is the principal cereal crop for both 'home' use and for export. Some of the main fields of research on wheat quality and process technology are outlined. Reference is made to basic scientific studies in plant physiology, biochemistry and dough rheology, and a more detailed account is given of work at the Bread Research Institute on milling and baking technology.

Overwintering Site and Occurrence Dynamics of Scrobipalpa salinella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) (퉁퉁마디뿔나방 월동 서식처와 발생동태)

  • The moving period and overwinteing site of Scrobipalpa salinella (Zeller) were investigated in Gimje, Jeonbuk, and Shinan, Jeonnam in the glasswort field. Densities of Scrobipalpa salinella larvae were started to increase from mid-September in halophytes, such as Suaeda asparagoides, S. japonica, and S. maritima, rather than glasswort. S. salinella was overwintering inside the halophytes in old larva. Density ratio of overwintering S. salinella in Suaeda asparagoides, S. japonica, and S. maritima were 20.5, 28.4 and 51.1%, respectively. Overwintering population was highest in S. maritima among halophytes. The occurrence of first adult in the next spring was from April 19 to April 20 in Gimje, Jeonbuk, and Shinan, Jeonnam.

Relationships Between Soil-Borne Virus Infection and Root Growth Damage in Korean Hulless Barley Cultivars

  • Viral infections and root growth were examined to elucidate the relationship between viral resistance and root growth in 26 Korean hulless barley cultivars. Viral resistance was estimated in experimental filed of Honam agricultural research institute for 3 years. Length and number of seminal and adventitious roots were examined for evaluation of root growth in both field and green-house conditions 30 days after seeding. Dominant viral infection occurred in Korean hulless barley by Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) in fields; however, susceptible cultivars were infected by either BaYMV, Barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV) or both. Only four cultivars, including Donghanchalssalbori, Kwangwhalssalbori, Namhossalbori and Naehanssalbori, presented stable resistance to viral infections. Susceptible cultivars to viral infection in fields showed shorter seminal root length and fewer adventitious root number than resistant cultivars. Resistant cultivars showed better root growth and significant difference in adventitious root length in green house conditions. Increase in the number of seminal roots in resistant cultivars was derived from decreased damage of roots by the viral infection compared to the susceptible cultivars.
