Diopside is a ceramic material with excellent physical and chemical properties. However, when it is applied as an LED packaging material, heat dissipation of the LED element is not sufficient due to its relatively lower thermal conductivity, which may cause degradation of the LED function. In this study, glass-ceramics based on a $ZrO_2-CaO-MgO-SiO_2$ system, in which diopside is the main crystal phase, were prepared by heat-treating the glass, which was composed of zircon ($ZrO_2-SiO_2$) powders and diopside ($CaO-MgO-2SiO_2$) powders. The possibility of using the glass-ceramics as a packaging material for LEDs was then investigated by analyzing the density, shrinkage, thermal conductivity, and phases generated according to the amount of zircon powder added. The density and shrinkage of specimens decreased slightly and then increased again with the amount of $ZrO_2-SiO_2$ added within a range of 0~0.38 mol. Even though the crystal phase of zircon does not appear in the $ZrO_2-CaO-MgO-SiO_2$ system, the glass containing 0.38 mol zircon powder showed the highest thermal conductivity, 1.85 W/mK, among the specimens fabricated in this study: this value was about 23% higher than that of pure diopside. It was found that the thermal conductivity of the glass-ceramics based on a $ZrO_2-CaO-MgO-SiO_2$ system was closely related to the density, but not to the phase type. Zirconia ($ZrO_2$), a component oxide of zircon, plays an important role in increasing the density of the specimen. Furthermore the thermal conductivity of glass-ceramics based on a $ZrO_2-CaO-MgO-SiO_2$ system showed a nearly linear relationship with thermal diffusivity.
In this study, a novel-processing route for producing microcellular zirconia ceramics has been developed. The proposed strategy for making the microcellular zirconia ceramics involves hollow microsphere as a pore former which has extremely low density of $0.025\;g/cm^3$. Effects of hollow microsphere content and sintering temperature on microstructure, porosity, pore distribution, and compressive strength were investigated in the processing of microcellular zirconia ceramics. By controlling the content of hollow microsphere, it was possible to make the porous zirconia ceramics with porosities ranging from 45% to 75%. Typical compressive strength value of microcellular zirconia ceramics with ${\sim}65%$ porosity was over 50 MPa. By adjusting the mixing ratio of large and small zirconia powders, it was possible to control the pore structure from close to open pores.

The sliding wear behavior of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was examined on a novel low temperature degradation-free zirconia/alumina composite material and conventional alumina and zirconia ceramics used for femoral head in total hip joint replacement. The wear of UHMWPE pins against these ceramic disks was evaluated by performing linear reciprocal sliding and repeat pass rotational sliding tests for one million cycles in bovine serum. The weight loss of polyethylene against the novel low temperature degradation-free zirconia/alumina composite disks was much less than those against conventional ceramics for all tests. The mean weight loss of the polyethylene pins was more io the linear reciprocal sliding test than in the repeal pass rotational sliding lest for all kinds of disk materials. Neither the coherent transfer film nor the surface damage was observed on the surface of the novel zirconia/alumina composite disks during the test. The observed r,'stilts indicated that the wear of the polyethylene was closely related to contacting materials and kinematic motions. In conclusion, the novel zirconia/alumina composite leads the least wear of polyethylene among the tested ceramics and demonstrates the potential as lhe alternative materials for femoral head in total hip joint replacement.

In this paper, in order to develop outstanding Pb-free composition ceramics, the $Fe_2O_3$-doped ($Na_{0.525}K_{0.443}Li_{0.037}$)($Nb_{0.883}Sb_{0.08}Ta_{0.037}$)$O_3$ + 0.3 wt% $Bi_2O_3$ + x wt% $Fe_2O_3$ (x= 0~1.0 wt%)(abbreviated as NKL-NST) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics have been synthesized using the ordinary solid state reaction method. The effect of $Fe_2O_3$-doping on their microstructure and electrical properties were investigated. XRD diffraction pattern studies confirm that $Fe_2O_3$ completely diffused into the NKL-NST lattice to form a new stable soild solution with $Fe^{3+}$ entering the $Nb^{5+}$, $Sb^{5+}$ and $Ta^{5+}$ of B-site. And, phase structure of all the ceramics exhibited pure perovskite phase and no secondary phase was found in the ceramics. The ceramics doped with 0.6 wt% $Fe_2O_3$ have the optimum values of piezoelectric constant($d_{33}$), planar piezoelectric coupling coefficient($k_p$) and mechanical quality factor($Q_m$) : $d_{33}$ = 233 [pC/N], $k_p$= 0.44, $Q_m$= 95. These results indicate that the ($Na_{0.525}K_{0.443}Li_{0.037}$)($Nb_{0.883}Sb_{0.08}Ta_{0.037}$)$O_3$ +0.3 wt% $Bi_2O_3$ + 0.6 wt% $Fe_2O_3$ ceramic is a promising candidate for lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.

Room temperature powder spray in vacuum process, so called Aerosol deposition (AD) is a room temperature (RT) process to fabricate thick and dense ceramic films, based on collision of solid ceramic particles. This technique can provide crack-free dense thin and thick films with thicknesses ranging from sub micrometer to several hundred micrometers with very fast deposition rates at RT. In addition, this technique is using solid particles to form the ceramic films at RT, thus there is few limitation of the substrate and easy to control the compositions of the films. In this article, we review the progress made in synthesis of piezoelectric thin/thick films, multi-layer structures, NTC thermistor thin/thick films, oxide electrode thin films for actuators or sensor applications by AD at Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) during the last 4 years.
Aluminium titanate($Al_2TiO_5$) has extremely anisotropic thermal expansion properties in single crystals, and polycrystalline material spontaneously microcracks in the cooling step after sintering process. These fine intergranular cracks limit the strength of the material, but provide an effective mechanism for absorbing strain energy during thermal shock and preventing catastrophic crack propagation. Furthermore, since machinable BN-ceramics used as an insulating substrate in current micro-electronic industry are very expensive, the development of new low-cost machinable substrate ceramics are consistently required. Therefore, cheap $Al_2TiO_5$-machinable ceramics was studied for the replacement of BN ceramics. $Al_2O_3-Al_2TiO_5$ ceramic composite was fabricated via in-situ reaction sintering. $Al_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ powders were mixed with various mol-ratio and sintered at 1400 to $1600^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. Density, hardness and strength of sintered ceramics were systematically measured. Phase analysis and microstructures were observed by XRD and SEM, respectively. Machinability of each specimens was tested by micro-hole machining. The results of research showed that the $Al_2TiO_5$-composites could be used for low-cost machinable ceramics.

Composite ceramics of alumina-TZP(3Y) have good mechanical and electrical properties. So, They have been used as high strength refractory materials and thick film substrates, etc. In this study, Composite ceramics of alumina-TZP(3Y) were fabricated by uniaxial pressing and sintering at 1,400, 1,500, and $1,600^{\circ}C$, and their microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. As the TZP(3Y) content in composite ceramics increases from 20 wt.% to 80 wt.%, the fracture toughness increases monotonically, which seems to be related to the higher relative density and/or toughening mechanism by means of stabilized tetragonal zirconia phase at room temperature. In contrast to the fracture toughness, Vickers hardness of the composite ceramics shows maximum value (1,938 Hv) at a 40 wt.% of TZP(3Y). The result of Vickers hardness is likely to be due to more dense sintered microstructure of composite ceramics than pure alumina and reinforcement of composite ceramics with TZP(3Y), considering that Vickers hardness of pure $Al_2O_3$ is greater than that of TZP(3Y). It is also shown that the $ZrO_2$ particles are $l^{\circ}Cated$ between $Al_2O_3$ grains and suppress grain growth each other.

In this study, in order to develop the composition ceramics with the excellent electrocaloric properties, $(Pb_{0.88}La_{0.08})(Zr_{0.65}Ti_{0.35})O_3$ ceramics were fabricated by the conventional solid-state method. Electrocaloric effects of $(Pb_{0.88}La_{0.08})(Zr_{0.65}Ti_{0.35})O_3$ ferroelectric ceramics were investigated and discussed using the characteristics of P-E hysteresis loops at wide temperature range from room temperature to $220^{\circ}C$. The temperature change ${\Delta}T$ due to the electrocaloric effect was calculated by Maxwell's relations, and reached the maximum of ~0.19 at $190^{\circ}C$ under applied electric field of 30 kV/cm.

Glasses in he system CuO-P$_2$O$_{5}$ -Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ -Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ -V$_2$O$_{5}$ were prepared by a press-quenching method on the copper plate. the glass-ceramics from these glasses were obtained by post-heat treatment, and the crystallization behavior and DC conductivities were determined. The conductivities of the glasses were range from 10$^{-6}$ s.$cm^{-1}$ / at room temperature ,but the conductivities of the glass-ceramics were 10$^{-3}$ s.$cm^{-1}$ / increased by 10$^3$ order. The crystalline product in the glass-ceramics was CuV$_2$O$_{6}$ . the crystal growth of CuV$_2$O$_{6}$ phase increased with heat-treatment conditions. The linear relationship between il($\sigma$T) and T$^{-1}$ suggested that the electrical conduction in the present glass-ceramics would be due to a small polaron hopping(SPH) mechanism.

In this study, in order to develop multilayer ceramics vibrator for ultrasonic nozzle, PMN-PNN-PZT ceramics were fabricated using $Li_{2}CO_{3}-Na_{2}_CO_{3}$ as sintering aids and their piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics were investigated according to the amount of PbO. With increasing PbO contents, secondary phases were increased and phase structure was changed from tetragonal structure to rhombohedral structure and also electromechanical coupling factor was linearly decreased. At the composition ceramics with the sintering temperature of $870^{\circ}C$ and 1 mol% excess PbO, density, electromechanical coupling factor, dielectric constant, piezoelectric d constant and mechanical quality factor showed the optimum value of $7.879\;g/cm^{3}$, 0.55, 1149, 328 pC/N, 1224, respectively for multilayer ceramics vibrator application for ultrasonic nozzle.
