  • The LTCCs (Low-Temperature Co-fired Ceramics) are very important for electronic industry to build smaller RF modules and to fulfill the necessity for miniaturization of devices in wireless communication industry. The dielectric materials with sintering temperature $T_{sint}$<90$0^{\circ}C$ are required. In this study, BaO-N $d_2$ $O_3$-Ti $O_2$ (BNT : 20∼40 wt%) for ceramic materials and L $a_2$ $O_3$- $B_2$ $O_3$-Ti $O_2$ (LBT : 80∼60 wt%) for crystallizable glasses were used. The glass/ceramic composites were investigated for sintering behavior, phase evaluation, densities, interface reaction and microwave dielectric properties. It was found that the addition LBT glass frist significantly lowered the sintering temperature to below 90$0^{\circ}C$ and the densification with increasing addition LBT glass frist developed rapidly which was meant to be namely 90% of relative density. The sintered bodies ekhibited applicable dielectric properties, namely 15 for $\varepsilon$$_{r}$,, 10000 GHz for Q* $f_{0}$. The results suggest that the composites have good potential as a new candidate for LTCC materials.

  • Low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology offers significant benefits over the other established packaging technologies for high density, high microwave frequency, and fast signal application. Most conventional electroceraramics do not meet the basic requirements in respect of sinterability for LTCC technology. Attention is, therefore, focused on the role of glasses because of the capability they supply with lower sintering temperatures. In this study, commercial ceramic (MBRT-90) in the system BaO-N $d_2$ $O_3$-Ti $O_2$ (BNT: 40 ~ 80 wt%) and L $a_2$ $O_3$- $B_2$ $O_3$-Ti $O_2$ glass (LBT;60 ~ 20 wt%) were prepared. These glass/ceramic composites were evaluated for sintering behavior, phase evaluation, densities, interface reaction, crystallinity, microstructure and microwave dielectric properties. It was found that the addition LBT glass frits significantly lowered the sintering temperature to below 90$0^{\circ}C$ and as temperature increased (750~90$0^{\circ}C$) densification developed dynamically which was meant to be as over 95% of relative density. It is supposed that in the microstructure, the grain size was increased accompanying with the formation of different phases such as LaB $O_3$ and Ti $O_2$ under the condition of increasing sintering temperature. The sintered bodies represented applicable dielectric properties, namely 20 ~ 40 for $\varepsilon_{{\gamma}}$, ~ 10000 GHz for Q* $f_{0}$ and 10~80 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ for $\tau$$_{f}$. The results suggest that the composite is one of feasible candidates for the microwave use in LTCC technology.y.e use in LTCC technology.y.

  • This study was performed to investigate the color stability of IPS Empress 2 glass-ceramic after heat-pressing and/or heat-treatments. Three types of IPS Empress 2 ingots (shade 100, 300, 500) were tested. For this study, three groups were prepared as follows: group 1 is as-received material, group 2 is heat-pressed material, and group 3 is fully heat -treated material. The color of the specimens was measured with a colorimeter. The data were statistically evaluated with one-way ANOVA and Scheffe's multiple test. The results obtained were as follows: 1. IPS Empress 2 glass-ceramic demonstrated less color stability according as the shade is lighter. Namely, the shade 500 showed the lowest color shifts and the shade 100 showed the greatest color shifts after heat-pressing and heat-treatments. 2. In the cases of shade 100 and 300, the changes of ${\Delta}E^*$ were affected mostly by the changes of $L^*$ and $b^*$. 3. In ${\Delta}E^*$ of the shade 100, there were significant differences among the group 1, 2, and 3 (P<0.001). 4. In ${\Delta}E^*$ of the shade 300, there were significant differences between the group 1 and 2, and the group 1 and 3 (P<0.001). 5. In ${\Delta}E^*$ of the shade 500, there was significant difference only between the group 1 and 3 (P<0.001).

  • PURPOSE. The objective of this study was to compare the fracture toughness ($K_{Ic}$) obtained from the single edge V-notched beam (SEVNB) and the fractographic analysis (FTA) of a glass-infiltrated and a zirconia ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS. For each material, ten bar-shaped specimens were prepared for the SEVNB method ($3mm{\times}4mm{\times}25mm$) and the FTA method ($2mm{\times}4mm{\times}25mm$). The starter V-notch was prepared as the fracture initiating flaw for the SEVNB method. A Vickers indentation load of 49 N was used to create a controlled surface flaw on each FTA specimen. All specimens were loaded to fracture using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5-1 mm/min. The independent-samples t-test was used for the statistical analysis of the $K_{Ic}$ values at ${\alpha}$=0.05. RESULTS. The mean $K_{Ic}$ of zirconia ceramic obtained from SEVNB method ($5.4{\pm}1.6\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$) was comparable to that obtained from FTA method ($6.3{\pm}1.6\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$). The mean $K_{Ic}$ of glass-infiltrated ceramic obtained from SEVNB method ($4.1{\pm}0.6\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$) was significantly lower than that obtained from FTA method ($5.1{\pm}0.7\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$). CONCLUSION. The mean $K_{Ic}$ of the glass-infiltrated and zirconia ceramics obtained from the SEVNB method were lower than those obtained from FTA method even they were not significantly different for the zirconia material. The differences in the $K_{Ic}$ values could be a result of the differences in the characteristics of fracture initiating flaws of these two methods.

  • Influence of $TiO_2$ on the dielectric properties of the $Bi(Nb_{0.7}Ta_{0.3})O_4$ ceramic with 7 wt% zinc borosilicate(ZBS) glass was investigated as a function of the $TiO_2$ contents with a view to applying this system to LTCC technology. The $Bi(Nb_{0.7}Ta_{0.3})O_4$ ceramic addition of 7 wt% ZBS glass ensured successful sintering below $900^{\circ}C$. But, TCF of $Bi(Nb_{0.7}Ta_{0.3})O_4$ ceramic is large negative values, respectively, it is necessary to adjust to zero TCF for practical applications Therefore, the addition of materials having positive TCF, such as $TiO_2$, might be an effective method for the improvement. In general, increasing addition of $TiO_2$ increased dielectric constant and TCF but it decreased the sinterability and $Q{\tiems}f$ value significantly due to the dielectric property and high sintering temperature of $TiO_2$. $Bi(Nb_{0.7}Ta_{0.3})O_4$ ceramic with 7 wt% ZBS glass and then addition 0.5 wt% $TiO_2$ sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ demonstrated 42 in the dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}_r$), 1,000 GHz in the $Q{\times}f$ value, and $10{\pm}5\;ppm/^{\circ}C$ in the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency(${\tau}_f$).

  • The stabilizing behavior of heavy metals in the silicate glass containing Electric Arc Furnace dust (EAF dust) were studied by the Toxic Characterization Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test, and the change of crystalline phase and glass network structure were investigated as a function of EAF dust content added. The glass containing EAF dust of $30\;wt\%$ an oxygen/network former ratio(R) of $2\~3$ allowing a fairly stable network structure thus showed much lower heavy metal leaching concentration than that for containing EAF dust above $50\;wt\%$ at TCLP test. For the glass containing EAF dust $50\~60\;wt\%$, however, the R was over 3, which weakened the glass network structure and increased the heavy metals leachate. Adding the EAF dust to a glass decreased the degree of Si-O-Si symmetry and increased the number of non-bridging oxygen, which decreased the chemical durability of glasses. When the dust content in a glass was over $70\;wt\%$, the Zn and Fe ions reacted to form the spinel crystal rather than to bind to network structure of glass and leaching concentration of those ions from the specimen decreased, so the spinel phase could be attributed to lowering a heavy metal leaching.

  • In general the chemical composition of glass ceramics in Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 system is similar to the composition of $\beta$-spodumene (Li2O-Al2O3-4SiO2). With the object to manufacture the glass ceramics which can be produced in the domestic pot the composition of glass was so settled at 1.0 Li2O.0.9Al2O3.6.0SiO2 in order to reduce the contents of Li2O, to prevent the corrosion of the pot and to decrease the cost of raw materials. 0.2 mole and 0.1 mole of the mixture of TiO2 and ZrO2 as nucleants were added to the basic composition of 1.0 Li2O-0.9Al2O3-6.0SiO2. Each sample was divided into two kinds with a TiO2/ZrO2 ratio of 2 to 1 and the other with a TiO2/ZrO2 ratio fo 1 to 1. Thermal expansion coefficient, the most important property of glass ceramics, was tested. The softening point and the melting point of the samples were observed by the use of a heating microscope. The results obtained were as follows. The manufacturing of glass ceramics seems to be possible in the industrial plant using the domestic pot. 1) The composition of the glass which can be melted in the domestic pot process was near 1.0 Li2O.0.9Al2O3.6.0SiO2. 2) The temperature range of crystal creation and crystal growth was between 850-94$0^{\circ}C$, and 5 hours holding the samples at the temperature range was enough to crystallize them. The major crystal was $\beta$-spdumene and there existed petalite partialy. 3) The thermal expansion coefficient fo the crystallized glass was negative. 4) The deforming point of the crystallized glass was 1435$^{\circ}C$.

  • Mechanical and chemical tests were performed on $Zro_2 \cdot SiO_2$ glass fibers manufactured by the sol-gel method and E-glass fibers-reinforced cement composites in order to investigate the interactions between glass fibers and cement matrices. Chemical attack leads to corrosion of the glass fiber surfaces. In the corrosion reactions, the surface of $30ZrO_2 \cdot 70 SiO_2$ glass fibers developed a densified concentric layer, which consists of glass corrosion products with much higher Zr and lower Si than the fresh glass fiber. The layer of reaction product is regarded to stiffen the cement matrices and provide a useful improvement to the mechanical properties. The addition of $ZrO_2$ content increases the corrosion resistance of glass fibers in cement by forming a passivating layer on the surface of glass fibers.

  • Fibers of ZrO2-SiO2 system were prepared from the hydrolysis and condensation of Si(OC2H5)4 and Zr(OnC3H7)4 with different H2O/alkoxide molar ratios. It was found that fibers could be drawn in the viscosity range of 1~100 poise from HCl catalyzed solutions with lower water contents of the mole ratio H2O/alkoxide, r 2. The fibrous gels were converted into the corresponding oxide glass fibers by heating at 80$0^{\circ}C$. Mechanical test was performed on E, A and 20ZrO2-80SiO2 glass fibers reinforced cement in order to investigate the flexural strength. The flexural strength value of 20ZrO2-80SiO2 glass fibers reinforced cement was greater than those of E and A. The chemical durability of the fibers in alkaline solutions increased with ZrO2 content. The weight loss due to the corrosion by 2N-NaOH solutions at $25^{\circ}C$ for 160 hours was about 0.31$\times$10-2 mg/dm2 for the 20ZrO2-80SiO2 glass fibers, which was superior to that of Vycor glass.
