  • The formation microstructure and properties of novel ceramic composite materials by active filler con-trolled polymer pyrolysis were investigated. Polymethlsiloxane filled with W is of particular interested be-cause of the formation of ceramic bonded hard materials (WC-$W_{2}C$-$S_{1}OC$) for wear resistant applications. Highly metal-filled polymer suspensions were prepared and their conversion to ceramic composites by an-nealing in $N_{2}C$ atmosphere at 1000-$1600^{\circ}C$ were studied. Dimensional change porosity and phase distribution (filler network) were analyzed and correlated to the resulting material properties. Microcrystalline com-posites with the filler reaction products embedded to the resulting material properties. Microcrystalline com-posites with the filler reaction products embedded in a silicon oxycarbide glass matrix were produced. De-pending on the pyrolysis conditions ceramic composites with a density up to 95 TD% a hardness of 7-8.8GPa Yong's modulus of 220-230 GPa a fracture toughness of 6-6.8$MPam^{1/2}$ and a flexual strength of 380-470 MPa were obtained.

  • The serious issue of tall building is to ensure the fire-resistance of high strength concrete. The fire resistant finishing method is necessarily essential in order to satisfy the fire resistance time of 3 h required by the law. The fire resistant finishing method is installed by applying a fire resistant material as a method of shotcrete or a fire resistant board to high strength concrete surface. This method can reduce the temperature increase of the reinforcement embedded in high strength concrete at high temperature due to the installation thickness control. This study is interested in identifying the effectiveness of inorganic alumino-silicate compounds including the inorganic admixture such as fly ash and meta-kaolin as the fire resistant finishing materials through the analysis of fire resistance and components properties at high temperature. The study results show that the fire resistant finishing material composed of fly ash and meta-kaolin has the thermal stability of the slight decrease of compressive strength at high temperature. These thermal stability is caused by the ceramic binding capacity induced by alkali activation reaction by the reason of the thermal analysis result not showing the decomposition of calcium hydrate. Inorganic compounds composed of fly ash and meta-kaolin is evaluated to be very effective as the fire resistance material for finishing to protect the concrete substrate by the reason of those simplicity in both application and manufacture. The additional study about the adhesion in the interface with concrete substrate is necessary for the purpose of the practical application.

  • Since SiOC was introduced as an anode material for lithium ion batteries, it has been studied with different chemical compositions and microstructures using various silicon based inorganic polymers. Poly(phenyl carbosilane) is a SiOC precursor with a high carbon supply in the form of the phenyl unit, and it has been investigated for film applications. Unlike any other siloxane-based polymers, oxygen atoms must be utilized in an oxidation process, and the amount of oxygen is controllable. In this study, SiOC anodes were prepared using poly(phenyl carbosilane) with different heat treatment conditions, and their electrochemical properties as an anode material for lithium ion batteries were studied. In detail, cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge cycling behavior were evaluated using a half-cell. A SiOC anode which was prepared under a heat treatment condition at $1200^{\circ}C$ after an oxidation step showed stable cyclic performance with a reversible capacity of 360 mAh/g.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced SiC composites (C/SiC) have high-temperature stability and excellent thermal shock resistance, and are currently being applied in extreme environments, for example, as aerospace propulsion parts or in high-performance brake systems. However, their low thermal conductivity, compared to metallic materials, are an obstacle to energy efficiency improvements via utilization of regenerative cooling systems. In order to solve this problem, the present study investigated the bonding strength between carbon fiber and matrix material within ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials, demonstrating the relation between the microstructure and bonding, and showing that the mechanical properties and thermal conductivity may be improved by treatment of the carbon fibers. When fiber surface was treated with a nitric acid solution, the observed segment crack areas within the subsequently generated CMC increased from 6 to 10%; moreover, it was possible to enhance the thermal conductivity from 10.5 to 14 W/m·K, via the same approach. However, fiber surface treatment tends to cause mechanical damage of the final composite material by fiber etching.

  • Ethyl silicate was used as organic binder for alumina refractories. In the present work only 15% of the water required for complete hydrolysis of ethyl silicate was initially added. The balance was provided from the atmosphere under controlled conditions of temperature and rh. The purpose of detailing the possible binder problem areas is more to indicate that the binder can have an effect on ceramic operations.

  • Laser beam can be either absorbed or scattered in porous ceramic material and its optical characteristics need to be understood. Electro-magnetic multiphysics software was used to simulate and understand the actual scattering phenomena in porous materials. 785nm femtosecond laser was irradiated on the surface of ceramic material and strong scattering occurred in drilling process. The computer results showed the scattering and absorption phenomena of Aluminum oxide were a mixture of dielectric and metallic material. The computer simulation showed the laser beam was almost extinct at the aspect rate of 5 approximately.

  • Inkjet printing is a widespread technology, offering advantages such as high-quality decoration, a continuous process, and the accurate direct reproduction of patterns or pictures. In inkjet printing technology, the dispersion stability of ceramic ink is one of the most important factors. In this study, the dispersion stability of blue $CoAl_2O_4$ ink for ceramic inkjet printing is systematically investigated. Blue $CoAl_2O_4$ pigment was synthesized by a solid-state reaction and then milled to less than 300nm in size. In order to investigate the influence of the viscosity on the dispersion stability, two types of $CoAl_2O_4$ ceramic inks (termed here Blue L and Blue H) were prepared using different volume ratios of ethylene glycol and ethanol. The Blue L and Blue H ink solutions contained cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB) as a dispersive agent. The viscosity, surface tension and jetting stability of the $CoAl_2O_4$ ceramic inks were analyzed using a rheometer, a surface tension meter and a dropwatcher. The dispersion stability of the $CoAl_2O_4$ ceramic ink was investigated by a multiple light-scattering method. Blue H, a ceramic ink with higher viscosity, showed much better dispersion stability than the Blue L ceramic ink.

  • The sliding wear behaviors of three different compositions of novel low temperature degradation-free zirconia/alumina (LTD-free Z/A) composites were examined in a ceramic-ceramic contact pair. The wear tests were performed by using a pin-on-disk type wear tester in a linear reciprocal sliding motion with a line contact in both dry and bovine serum lubricated conditions at room temperature. From the results of dry sliding wear tests, Z/A#1((5.3Y, 4.6Nb)-TZP/80 $vol\%Al_2O_3$) showed the best wear resistance among three kinds of LTD-free Z/A composites. For the bovine serum lubricated sliding wear tests, wear was too little to be measured for all kinds of Z/A composites. These novel LTD-free Z/A composites having excellent wear resistance demonstrated a potential as the alternative materials for the ceramic-ceramic contact pairs of femoral head and acetabular liner in total hip replacement.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of Cr dopant on the bulk trap level and grain boundary characteristics of $Bi_2O_3$-based ZnO (ZB) using dielectric functions such as $Z^*$, $Y^*$, $M^*$, ${\varepsilon}^*$, and $tan{\delta}$. More than two bulk traps of $Zn_i$ and $V_o$ probably in different ionization states could be identified in ZBCr($ZnO-Bi_2O_3-Cr_2O_3$). The grain boundaries of ZBCr could be electrochemically divided into two types: sensitive to ambient oxygen and thus electrically active one and oxygen-insensitive and thus electrically inactive one.
