  • STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. Recently Yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) has been introduced due to superior flexural strength and fracture toughness compared to other dental ceramic systems. Although zirconia has outstanding mechanical properties, the phenomenon of decrease in the life-time of zirconia resulted from degradation in flexural strength after low temperature aging has been reported. PURPOSE. The objective of this study was to investigate degradation of flexural strength of Y-TZP ceramics after various low temperature aging treatments and to evaluate the phase stability and micro-structural change after aging by using X-ray diffraction analysis and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). MATERIAL AND METHODS. Y-TZP blocks of Vita In-Ceram YZ (Vita Zahnfabrik, Bad $S\ddot{a}ckingen$, Germany) were prepared in 40 mm (length) $\times$ 4 mm (width) $\times$ 3 mm (height) samples. Specimens were artificially aged in distilled water by heat-treatment at a temperature of 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, 200, and $225^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours, in order to induce the phase transformation at the surface. To measure the mechanical property, the specimens were subjected to a four-point bending test using a universal testing machine (Instron model 3365; Instron, Canton, Mass, USA). In addition, X-ray diffraction analysis (DMAX 2500; Rigaku, Tokyo, Japan) and SEM (Hitachi s4700; Jeol Ltd, Tokyo, Japan) were performed to estimate the phase transformation. The statistical analysis was done using SAS 9.1.3 (SAS institute, USA). The flexural strength data of the experimental groups were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and to detect statistically significant differences ($\alpha$= .05). RESULTS. The mean flexural strength of sintered Vita In-Ceram YZ without autoclaving was 798 MPa. When applied aging temperature at below $125^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours, the flexural strength of Vita In-Ceram YZ increased up to 1,161 MPa. However, at above $150^{\circ}C$, the flexural strength started to decrease. Although low temperature aging caused the tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation related to temperature, the minimum flexural strength was above 700 MPa. CONCLUSION. The monoclinic phase started to appear after aging treatment above $100^{\circ}C$. With the higher aging temperature, the fraction of monoclinic phase increased. The ratio of monoclinic/tetragonal + monoclinic phase reached a plateau value, circa 75% above $175^{\circ}C$. The point of monoclinic concentration at which the flexural strength begins to decrease was between 12% and 54%.

  • The elastic moduli or fracture strengths of multi-layered film (SiO$_2$/po1y-Si/SiN/SiO$_2$, 2.77 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thick), CVD diamond film (1.6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thick), SiO$_2$ film (1.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thick) and SiN film (0.43 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thick) made for the membrane of ink-jet printer head were measured with cantilever beam bending method using nanoindenter after fabricating in the form of micro cantilever beam (${\mu}$-CLB). And the elastic moduli of ${\mu}$-CLB of SiO$_2$ film and SiN film were compared with the value of each film on silicon substrate determined with nanoindentation method. The results showed that the modulus and strength of multi-layered film decrease from 68.08 ㎬ and 2.495 ㎬ to 56.53 ㎬ and 1.834 ㎬, respectively as the width of CLB increases from 18.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 58.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$. And the elastic moduli of SiO$_2$ and SiN films measured with ${\mu}$-CLB bending method are 68.16 ㎬ and 215.45 ㎬, respectively and the elastic moduli of these films on silicon substrate measured with nanoindentation method are 98.78 ㎬ and 219.38 ㎬, respectively. These results show that with ${\mu}$-CLB bending technique, moduli can be measured to within 2%.

  • Flexion of a metal/ceramic fixed partial denture(EPD) frameworks under function can cause fracture of porcelain or deterioration of the cement seal. This study evaluated the flexion characteristics of three-unit mandibular FPD frameworks, repacing the second pre-molar under compressive load(200g, 400g). Testing was accompished with real-time holographic interferometry, using 6 porcelain fused-to metal frameworks. Tested alloys were non-precious alloy(Heracles, Holland), semi-precious alloy(Degudent U, Germany) and precious alloy(Degudent H, Germany). Changes of the fringe patterns according to the heat treatment(porcelain firing cycle), various loads(200g, 400g), occlusal forms(occlusal porcelain veneering, facial porcelain veneering), various alloys and post-soldering units were compared. Dental study model(Nissan dental products, Inc. D51DP-500A, Japan) and six 3-unit metal/ceramic fixed partial denture frameworks were used as experimental materials. 36 holograms were taken on fixed dental study model by using the 10mW He-Ne laser and real-time holographic interferometry. On the basis of this study, the following conclusions can be drawn : 1. In the frameworks for facial porcelain veneering, the semi-precious alloy framework was least deformed and precious alloy framework, non-precious alloy framework orderly before heat treatment, and the deformation was not shown great difference among three alloys after heat treatment and post-soldering. 2. • The success of porcelain laminate veneer depends on the bond strength between tooth structure and ceramic restoration and the design of tooth preparation. In particular, incisal coverage and incisal finish line are the two most important factors in long-term fracture resistance. Although the majority of clinicians are practicing incisal coverage and there are various opinions on the geo-metrical ratio between the clinical crown length of the remaining tooth structure and the length of incisal extension in porcelain laminate veneer and the optimal incisal finish lines. scientific evidence still loaves much to be desired. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the amounts of incisal coverage and the types of incisal finish line on the stress distribution in maxillary anterior porcelain laminate veneers under two different loading conditions. Three-dimensional finite element models of a maxillary anterior porcelain veneer with differ-ent amounts of incisal coverage ; 0, 1, 2, and 3mm and different incisal finish lines feathered edge, incisal bevel, reverse bevel and lingual chamfer with various amounts of lingual extension were developed. 300N force was applied at the point 0.5mm cervical of the linguoincisal edge in two loading conditions ; A) 125 degrees, B) 132 degrees. Tensile and compressive stress in ceramic and shear stress in the resin cement layer were analyzed using three-dimensional finite element method. The results were as follows : 1. The types of incisal finish line had more influence on the stress distribution in porcelain laminate veneer than the amounts of incisal coverage. 2. In case of no incisal coverage, incisal beveled laminate exhibited more evenly distributed tensile stress than feathered edged laminate. And in case of incisal coverage, reverse beveled laminate and lingual chamfered laminate with 1mm lingual extension exhibited more evenly distributed tensile stress than lingual chamfered laminates with 2mm and 3mm lingual extension. 3. As long as the lingual chamfer goes, less tensile stress was found at the incisal edge, while much more tensile stress was found at the lingual margin area in proportion to the length of lingual extension. 4. Under 125 degree load, tensile stress in porcelain laminate veneer had increased compared with that under 132 degree load and the difference exhibited by the change of the amount of tooth support was larger. 5. The types of incisal finish line and the distance from the incisal finish line to the loading point had more influence on the shear stress distribution in the resin cement layer than the amounts of incisal coverage. In contrast loading condition had little influence.

  • The effect of h-BN content on microstructure, mechanical properties, and machinability of AlN-BN based machinable ceramics were investigated. The relative density of sintered compact decreased with increasing h-BN content. The four-point flexural strength also decreased from 238 MPa of monolith up to 182 MPa by the addition of 30 vol% h-BN. Both low Young's modulus and residual tensile stress, formed by the thermal expansion coefficient difference between AIN and h-BN, might cause the strength drop in AlN-BN composite. The crack deflection, and pull-out phenomena increased by the plate-like h-BN. However, the fracture toughness decreased with h-BN content. The second phases, consisted of YAG and ${\gamma}$-Al$_2$O$_3$, were formed by the reaction between Al$_2$O$_3$ and Y$_2$O$_3$. During end-milling process, feed and thrust forces measured for AlN-(10~30) vol% BN composites decreased with increasing h-BN particles, showing excellent machinability. Also, irrespective of h-BN content, relatively good surfaces with roughness less than 0.5 m (Ra) could be achieved within short lapping time.

  • A PMN-PT-BT/Ag composite was prepared by surface modification with MgO sol with hoping to suppress silver's migration during sintering. The mixture of PbO, $N_2O_5,\;TiO_2\;with\;Mg(NO_3)_2$ instead of MgO was ball milled, the solvent was removed and then the dried powders were calcined at 950$^{\circ}C$/1h. The calcined powder were treated with 3.0 mol% $Ag_2O$ and 1.0 wt% MgO sol and calcined at 550$^{\circ}C$/1h. The dielectrics sintered at 1000$^{\circ}C$/4h under a flowing oxygen showed the density of 7.84g/$cm^3$, the room temperature dielectric constant of 18400, the dielectric loss of 2.4%, the specific resistivity of $0.24{\times}10^{12}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$. It also showed the bending strength of $120.7{\pm}11.26$ MPa and the fracture toughness of $0.87{\pm}0.002\;MPam^{1/2}$ which were comparable to commercial PZT. The microstructure sonsisted of grains of ∼4${\mu}m$. SEM and SIMS analysis showed that Ag grew as ∼1${\mu}m$ and excess MgO as ∼0.5${\mu}m$.

  • The high-speed steel (shorten as HSS) consists of Fe and several kinds of transition metal carbides. The cutting tools or wear-resistant materials made from HSS experience relatively high thermal shock because a coolant such as water or oil is flowed over the surface of heated HSS. The purpose of this research is to increase the hardness, strength, fracture toughness and thermal shock resistance of HSS. A possible strategy is to incorporate a hard ceramic material with high strength in HSS matrix. This paper describes the processing, microstructure and mechanical properties of the oriented unidirectional mullite fiber/HSS composite. The unidirectional mullite fibers of 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diameter were dispersed by the ultrasonic irradiation of 38 kHz in an ethylenglycol suspension containing HSS powder of 11${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ median size. The dried green composites with 4-68 vol% fibers were hot-pressed for 2h at 100$0^{\circ}C$ in Ar atmosphere under a pressure of 39 MPa. The higher density was achieved in the composite with a lower content of fibers. The oriented unidirectional fibers were well dispersed in the HSS matrix. The average distance between the center of fibers in the cross section was close to the value calculated from the fiber fraction. No reaction occurred at the interfaces between HSS and mullite fibers in the composites. The composite with 13.6 vol% fibers showed 100 MPa of four point flexural strength at room temperature. The thermal expansion of composite with heating was influenced by the orientation of mullite fibers.

  • Engineering ceramics have superior heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance. Consequently, these art significant candidates for hot-section structural components of heat engine and the inner containment of nuclear fusion reactor. Besides, some of them have the ability to heal cracks and great benefit can be anticipated with great benefit the structural engineering field. Especially, law fracture toughness of ceramics supplement with self-healing ability. In the present study, we have been noticed some practically important points for the healing behavior of silicon nitride, alumina, mullite with SiC particle and whisker. The presence of silicon carbide (SiC) in ceramic compound is very important for crack-healing behavior. However, self-healing of SiC has not been investigated well in detail yet. In this study, commercial SiC was selected as sample, which can be anticipated in the excellent crack healing ability. The specimens were produced three-point bending specimen with a critical semi-circular crack of which size that is about $50-700{\mu}m$. Three-point bending test and static fatigue test were performed cracked and healed SiC specimens. A monotonic bending load was applied to cracked specimens by three-point loading at different temperature. The purpose of this paper is to report Strength Properties and Elastic Waves Characteristics of Silicon Carbide with Crack Healing Ability.

  • The spinel was calcined at temperatures in the range of $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$ with $100^{\circ}C$ interval to evaluate the effect of calcination temperature on mechanical properties of spinel-glass dental composites. Although the average particle size of spinel calcined at temperatures from $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$ was within 2.8~3.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$, the spinel calcined at $1300^{\circ}C$ was 4.66 $\mu\textrm{m}$ due to abnormal grain growth. Shrinkage and pore size of the spinel preform decreased and increased, respectively, as calcination temperature increased, indicating that the calcination temperature was significant to the powder compaction and the densification of the composites as a result of particle size and distribution. The optimum strength and the fracture toughness of the composite calcined at $1200^{\circ}C$ were 284$\pm$40 MPa, 2.5$\pm$0.1 MPaㆍ$m^{1/2}$ respectively. Optical experimental results showed that transmittance of the spinel-glass composite in the visible region was twice higher than that of the alumina-glass composite, suggesting that the spinel-glass composites possessed better aesthetic properties for all-ceramic dental crown application.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of hydrofluoric acid etching treatment on the bonding strength of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal(Y-TZP). Four groups of zirconia-resin cement specimens were prepared; 1) ZGS group (zirconia, no treatment), 2) ZGSH group (zirconia, hydrofluoric acid etching treatment) 3) H-ZGS group (Hybrid zirconia, no treatment) 4) H-ZGSH group (Hybrid zirconia, hydrofluoric acid etching treatment). The shear bond strength between zirconia and porcelain was measured using a Instron Universal Testing Machine(Model DBBP-500, Instron Corporation, Kyonggi, Korea). Data were statistically analyzed using independent t-test and two-way ANOVA(${\alpha}=0.05$). The ceramic-resin cement bonding strength was affected by hydrofluoric acid etching treatment(p<0.05). Digital microscope examination of the fracture surface showed mixed failures with adhesive and cohesive types in hydrofluoric acid etching treatment with treated zirconia and hybrid zirconia groups.
