Carbide Ceramics from Active-Filler-Controlled Pyrolysis in $CH_4$ Atmosphere

  • The formation, microstructure and properties of novel ceramic composite materials manufactured by active-filler-controlled polymer pyrolysis were investigated. In the presence of active filler particles such as transition metals, bulk components of various geometry could be fabricated from siliconorganic polymer. Molybdenum- and tungsten-filled polymer suspensions were prepared and their conversion to ceramic composites by annealing in $CH_4$ atmosphere were studied. Dimensional change. porosity and phase distribution (filler network) were analyzed and correlated to the resulting hardness values. Molybdenum and tungsten as active filler were carburized completely to $Mo_2C$, $W_2C$ and WC in $CH_4$ atmosphere. Consequently, microcrystalline composites with the filler reaction products embedded in a silicon oxycarbide glass matrix were formed. Hardness was increased with increasing carburization and reached 8.6-9.5 GPa in the specimen pyrolyzed in $CH_4$ atmosphere.

Characteristics of the PbO-Bi2O3-B2O3-ZnO-SiO2 Glass System Doped with Pb Metal Filler (Pb 금속필러가 첨가된 PbO-Bi2O3-B2O3-ZnO-SiO2계 유리의 특성)

  • We investigated the effect of Pb-metal filler added to a hybrid paste(PbO-$Bi_2O_3-B_2O_3$-ZnO glass frit and Pb-powder), for joining flip-chip sat lower temperatures than normal. The glass transition temperature was detected at $250^{\circ}C$ and the softening point occurred at $330^{\circ}C$. As the temperature increased, the specific density decreased due to the volatility of the Pb-metal and boron component in the glass. When the glass was heat-treated at $350^{\circ}C$ for 5 min, XRD results revealed a crystalline $Pb_4Bi_3B_7O_{19}$ phase that had been initiated by the addition of Pb-filler in the hybrid paste. The addition of the Pb-metal filler caused are action between the Pb-metal and glass that accelerated the formation of the liquid phase. The liquid phase that formed, promoted bonding between the flip-chip substrate sat lower temperature.

Ceramic Foams by the Self-Blowing of Polymer (고분자의 자체발포를 이용한 세라믹 다공질체)

  • Ceramic foams were prepared by a self-blowing process of a polysiloxane with A1$_2$O$_3$ as a filler. The release of water and ethanol vapor during the condensation reaction of the polymer triggered the pores in the polymer melt. The size. interconnectivity and shape of the pores in the ceramic foams were strongly dependent on the viscosity of the polymer melt, which could be varied by the content and size oi the filler. When the content of the filler inceased and the size of the filler decreased. the size of the pores were decreased and the thickness between the pores were increased. In the addition, the viscosity of polymer melt increased by the pretreatment at 130$^{\circ}C$ for Ire intermolecular cross linking thereby stabilizing the foam structure. The density and compressive strength of the ceramic foams were affected by the heating rate during the blowing process.

  • In this study, we report that effects of a filler with a high coefficient of thermal expansion on a sealant for high-temperature ($750{\sim}850^{\circ}C$) SOFC. We designed a $SiO_2-BaO-ZnO-B_2O_3-Al_2O_3$ glass system with a softening temperature higher than $750^{\circ}C$. The properties of the glass system show not only low volumetric shrinking but also low swelling. The glass system did not create a crystal phase during along-term heat treatment. We fabricated a seal gasket with 0, 10, 15, and 20 wt% cristobalite added as filler materials with glass powder. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the seal gasket increased according to cristobalite content. During along-term heat treatment, the leak rate decreased by about 5% after a heat treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere at $750^{\circ}C$ for 2000 h, also decreasing by about 6% after a heat treatment in a reducing atmosphere at $750^{\circ}C$ for 1000 h.

  • Magnetic properties of composite materials consisting of polymer filled with ferromagnetic powders (MnZn ferrite, Fe-Si alloy) were investigated in this study. The volume fraction of magnetic powders as fillers was varied from 70 % to 95 %. This paper presents the fabrication method of polymer magnetic composites in an effort to produce the 0-3 types of MnZn ferrite and FeSi as fillers with a proper complex permeability through the optimization of some experimental parameters. The polymer matrix composites were prepared by mixing the crushed ferrites and flaky FeSi powders homogenously with low-density resins (EPDM, epoxy). The relationships among the manufacturing technology of these materials, their filler volume fraction, as well as their complex permeability were measured and analyzed.

  • A novel sintering process is proposed for bonding of $BaTiO_3$ and $Al_2O_3$ layers. Common commercial glass was used and infilterated among filler particles. As the kind of commercial glass, the phenomenon of the infilteration is different. Although Sud-1140 glass forms a glass/filler composite, it is not completely infilterated into the filler particles at $900^{\circ}C$. However as the increase of sintering temperature the infilteration of glass was improved. In this study, GA-1 and GA-12 glasses were infilterated the more than Sud-1140 glass. However, they are reacted by $BaTiO_3$ layer. The results of the experiment show that constrained sintering and the co-firing of the different materials were possible for glass infilteration using Sud-1140 glass at $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • Formation and characterization of hydroxyapatite-based porous ceramics derived from polymer pyroysis were investigated. Polymer based process is chosen for preparing porous hydroxyapatite-based ceramics having a high mechanical strength. The hydroxyapatite-based porous ceramic was prepared by a self-blowing process of a polymethylsiloxane with filler and pyrolyzed at above $1000^{\circ}C$. Biphasic material consisted of hydroxyapatite and CaO has been prepared by solid state reaction from calcium hydroxide($Ca(OH)_2$) and calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate($CaHPO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$) as a filler material. The influence of filler content on mechanical properties was evaluated. The change of crystalline phase, microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated and discussed.

Preparation of Porous Glass by the Sintering (소결법에 의한 다공질유리의 제조)

  • Manufacturing process of porous glass by the filler method was studied. Commercial soda-lime-silicate glass powder was mixed with inorganic salt as the filler such as KCl, K2SO4, Na2SO4. Sintering shrinkages of mixed powders with the variation of sintering temperature were compared, and the effects of the fillers to shrinkages of mixed powder were increased in the order of Na2SO4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of pore diameter were manufactured when the filler sizes 100~200 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The open pore volume of porous glass is determined by the quantity of filler and porous glasses having open pore volume between 30 and 70 vol% are available. Available sintering temperature range for preparation of porous glass is from the softening temperature of the glass powder to eutectic melting temperature of DTA curve of mixed powder.

  • 유한요소법을 이용하여 STS VOD 래들에서 내장 내화물의 재질 및 back filler의 시공 위치에 따른 열응력을 수행하였다. 불소성 내화물의 경우 높은 열전도율에 의해 가동면과 배면(back face)간의 온도구배가 소성품에 비해 감소하였으며 탄성계수도 낮아 발생되는 열응력이 2~4배 낮았다. Back filler는 dolomite 내화물의 열간 팽창을 흡수하기 위해 시공하는 것으로, 상대적으로 낮은 열전도율을 가지고 있기 때문에 back filler의 내부와 외부에 급격한 온도구배가 발생된다. 결과적으로 래들의 내부는 고온을 유지하여 내화물이 팽창이 되고, 외부는 온도가 낮아지므로 수축되어 열응력이 증가하였다.
