CrN coatings have been used as protective coatings for cutting tools, forming tools, and various tribological machining applications because these coatings have high hardness. Cr-Al-N coatings have been investigated to improve the properties of CrN coatings. Cr-Al-N coatings were fabricated by a hybrid physical vapor deposition method consisting of unbalanced magnetron sputtering and arc ion plating with different working pressure and substrate bias voltage. The phase analysis of the composition was performed using XRD (x-ray diffraction). Cr-Al-N coatings were grown with textured CrN phase and (111), (200), and (220) planes. The adhesion strength of the coatings tested by scratch test increased. The friction coefficient and removal rate of the coatings were measured by a ball-on-disk test. The friction coefficient and removal rate of the coatings decreased from 0.46. to 0.22, and from $2.00{\times}10^{-12}m^2/N$ to $1.31{\times}10^{-13}m^2/N$, respectively, with increasing bias voltage. The tribological properties of the coatings increased with increasing substrate bias voltage.

Boron nitride (BN) nanofibers were fabricated using BN nanoparticles (70 nm) by electrospinning. Morphologies such as the diameter and density of the BN nanofibers are strongly influenced by the viscosity and dispersion state of the precursor solution. In this study, the precursor solution was prepared by ball milling BN nanoparticles and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, Mw~1,300,000) in ethanol, which was electrospun and then calcined to produce BN fibers. High-quality BN nanofibers were well fabricated at a BN concentration of 15 wt% with their diameters in the range of 500 nm to 800 nm; the viscosity of the precursor solution was $400mPa{\cdot}S$. The calcination of the as-electrospun BN fibers seemed to be completed by holding them at $350^{\circ}C$ for 2 h considering the TGA data. The morphologies and phases of the BN fibers were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD), respectively; Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) was also used for structure analysis.
Wear and friction properties of the alumina-glass dental ceramics were evaluated in exact in vitro environment (artificial saliva at 37$^{\circ}C$), using a ball-on-disc apparatus, at contact loads from 49 N to 196 N and with the disc rotating at 120 rpm up to 10$^{6}$ cycles to investigate the wear behavior. As the load increased from 49 N to 196 N, the friction coefficient of 0.025 was maintained, however, the volumetric wear rate rose from 2.18 ${\times}$10$^{-9}$TEX>$mm^{3}$/Nㆍm to 2.35 ${\times}$10$^{-6}$TEX>$mm^{3}$/Nㆍm. Experimental results indicated that the wear behavior of the alumina-glass composites with a sliding distance of 4.4 km was a typical adhesive wear, which was applicable for orthodontia ceramic brackets.
The pupose of this study was to compare the fracture strength of five kinds of all-ceramic crowns(Vintage, Dicor Empress-staining, Empress-layering, In-Ceram) luted with glass ionomer cerment and composite resin cement and to evaluate the effect of cements on the fracture stregth of all ceramic crowns. Five groups of twelve uniform sized all-ceramic crown specimens were fabricated. Six specimens of each group were cemented with glass ionomer cement(Fuji G.I. Cement) and the remaining six specimens of each group were etched, silane-treated, and cemented with composite resin cement(Bistite resin cement). The crowns were stored in water$(37^{\circ}C)$ for 1 day prior to loading in an Instron, using a steel ball(diameter 4mm) at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. The crowns were angled $30^{\circ}$, so the steel ball contacted with the crowns 2mm lingual from the mid-incisal edge. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. With G.I. cement, mean fracture load(Kg) Were : Intage : $18.33{\pm}1.47$ ; Empress-staining : $23.92{\pm}6.67$ ; Dicor : $24.0{\pm}5.81$ ; Empress-layering : $26.92{\pm}2.80$ ; In-Ceram : $51.58{\pm}6.87$ ; ANOVA revealed a significant difference existed(p<0.05) between the group A(Vintage, Dicor, Empress-staining, Empress-layering) and group B(In-Ceram). 2. With Resin cement, mean fracture load(Kg) were : Intage : $22.75{\pm}4.97$ ; Dicor : $42.75{\pm}7.07$ ; Empress-staining : $44.08{\pm}7.99$ ; Empresslayering : $50.42{\pm}5.43$ ; In-Ceram : $52.58{\pm}6.51$ ; ANOVA revealed a significatnt difference existed(p<0.05) between the group A(Vintage) and B(Dicor, Empress-staining Empress-alyering, In-Ceram). 3. Resin cement significantly increased the fracture strength of the all-ceramic crowns for Dicor(156%), Empress-staining(185%), Empress-alyering(187%)(p<0.05); but did not increase the fracture strength of Vintage(128%) and In-Ceram(101%)(p>0.05). 4. Majority of the all-ceramic crowns show a wedge fracture extending through proximal surfaces to an apex, usually apical third(with G.I. cement) or middle third(with Resin cement) of the facial surface.

All-ceramic restorations have had a more limited life expectancy than metal ceramic restorations because of their low strength. Their relatively lower strength and resistance to fracture have restricted the use of all-ceramic crowns to anterior applications where occlusal loads are lower. But there has been increasing interest in all-ceramic restorations because patients are primarily concerned with improved esthetics. Many efforts have been made to in prove the mechanical properties of dental ceramics. This study was designed to elucidate the influence of the luting agent on the strength of the Empress 2 crown (staining technique) cemented on human teeth. Seventy extracted human permanent molar teeth were chosen. Teeth were prepared for Empress 2 crowns with milling machine on a surveyor. A dental bur was placed in the mandrel that was positioned so that the long axis of the bur was perpendicular to the surveyor base. Dimensions of the Empress 2 crown preparation were $6^{\circ}$ taper on each side, $1.5{\pm}0.1mm$ shoulder margin, and 4mm crown height. The luting cements used in this study were as follow: 1. Uncemented 2. Zinc phosphate cements (Confi-Dental) 3. Conventional glass ionomer cement : Fuji 1 (GC) 4. Resin-modified glass ionomer cements : Fuji plus (GC) 5. Adhesive cements : Panavia F (Kuralay), Variolink II (Vivadent), Choice (Bisco). Fracture test using Instron. The crowns were loaded in compressive force to evaluate the effect of these cements on the breaking strength of these all-ceramic crowns. A steel ball with a diameter of 4mm was placed on the occlusal surface and load was applied to the steel ball by a cylindrical bolt with a crosshead speed of 0.5mm per minute until fracture occurred. The fractured surface was examined using Scanning Electron Microscopic Image (SEM) to discover the correlation between fracture strength and bonding capacity. Within the limitation of this in vitro study design, the results were as follows : 1. fomentations significantly increased the fracture resistance of Empress ceramic crowns compared to control. Uncemented (206.9 N): ZPC (812.9 N): Fuji 1 (879.5 N): Fuji Plus (937.7 N): Choice (1105.4 N): Variolink II (1221.1 N): Panavia F (1445.2 N). 2. Resin luting agent, treated by a silane bond enhancing agents, yielded a significant increase in fracture resistance. In some of the Panavia F group, a fracture extended into dentin. 3. According to SEM images of fractured Empress crowns, the stronger the bond at both interfaces(crown and die), the more fracture strength was acquired.
Nanocrystalline $BaTiO_3$ powder could be synthesized by solid-state reaction using the mixture which was prepared by a high energy milling process in a bead mill for $BaCO_3$ and nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ powders mixture. Effect of the milling time on the powder characteristic of the synthesized $BaTiO_3$ powder was investigated. Nanocrystalline $BaTiO_3$ with a particle size of 50 nm was obtained at $800^{\circ}C$. High tetragonal $BaTiO_3$ powder with a tetragonality(=c/a) of 1.009 and a specific surface area of $7.6m^2/g$ was acquired after heat-treatment at $950^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. High energy ball milling was effective in decreasing the reaction temperature and increasing the tetragonality.

A mini ball launch system was developed for the study of dynamic fracture of ceramic materials. The principle of velocity multiplication system is similar to two stage gun. The plastic sabot assembly houses steel plunger and the void filled with silicone rubber. The sabot is stopped by the stopper block then the steel plunger inside the sabot compress the silicone rubber to high pressure. Then the compressive energy of the silicone rubber is transferred to the ball. More than ten times of initial speed was attained. In this study, most effective silicone rubber for the highest final speed was chosen out of three different varieties by launch tests.

Both $Al_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$ nanopowders were ball-milled to break large agglomerates$(500nm\sim10{\mu}m$). To improve the dispersion of ball-milled nanoparticles in transformer oil, surface modification was performed with oleic acid(OA). The modified nanoparticles were examined by the particle size analyzer, electron microscope, Infrared spectroscopy and stability analyser. Particle Size distributions were measured for ball-milled particles, and the results were compared with the size distribution of primary particles. FTIR results indicated that hydrophobicity of modified nanoparticles was due to the chemical reaction between hydroxyl groups of particle surface and oleic acid. The dispersion stability of surface-modified nanoparticles was quite good in transformer oil.

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) film was deposited using benzene $(C_6H_6)$ by r. f-plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition. The tribological properties of the DLC film were tested by rotating ball-on-disc type tribometer isolated by a chamber. The tribological test was performed in air environment of relative humidity ranging from 0 to 90% in order to observe the tribological behavior of the DLC film with the change of humidity. We used steel ball and DLC coated steel ball to investigate the effect of the counterface material. Using steel ball, the friction coefficient of DLC film increased from 0.025 to 0.2 as the humidity increased from 0% to 90%. In case of DLC coated steel ball which didn't form the Fe-rich debris, the friction coefficient showed much lower dependence of humidity as 0.08 in relative humidity 90%. We confirmed that the high humidity dependence of the friction coefficient using steel ball resulted from the increase of debris size with humidity and the formation of Fe-rich debris by the wear of steel ball. And the friction coefficient was immediately dropped when the relative humidity changed from 90% to 0% during test using steel ball. From this result, we confirmed that the effect of the Fe-rich debris on the friction coefficient was that Fe element in debris formed the highly sensitive graphitic transfer layer to humidity.

This study was to investigate the reused possibility of zirconia reinforced glass-ceramic(IPS Empress Cosmo ceramic) with sprue button in the flexure strength and fracture toughness. 40 disk-shaped ceramic specimens (20 specimens: as-pressed material; 20 specimens: reused material) with approximately 1.7 mm thickness and 15 mm diameter were prepared by "lost wax" technique. The remnants(sprue buttons) were used for repressing. The surface treatments for the discs were gradually abraded with 320, 800, 1200, and 2000 grit SiC sandpaper. The specimens were evaluated their flexure strength with the biaxial flexure jig(ball-on-three balls) and their fracture toughness with Vickers Indentation-microfracture test. The Weibull moduli were calculated for biaxial flexural strength. The mean flexure strength and fracture toughness of each group were $122.2{\pm}18.3MPa$, $1.00{\pm}0.09MPa{\cdot}m^{0.5}$ (as-pressed ceramics), and $122.2{\pm}20.3MPa$, $1.01{\pm}0.10MPa{\cdot}m^{0.5}$ (reused ceramics). There were no significant differences in the strength and the fracture toughness between the as-pressed and the reused IPS Empress Cosmo ceramic (P>0.05). This implied zirconia reinforced glass-ceramic(IPS Empress Cosmo ceramic) could be used one more time by reusing of sprue button in the flexure strength and fracture toughness.
