  • High-temperature superconduction materials(Bi2223) possess electrical/electronic and magnetic properties. Because high-temperature superconduction materials is a ceramic powder, that cannot be produced singlehandedly. So Ag sheathed Bi-2223 wire was produced by drawing process using powder-in-tube(PIT) method. This superconductor has many difficulties to produce. The main difficulty is that the mechanical properties of the ceramic powder are very different from those of the Ag sheath. And by these properties, Bi2223 high-temperature superconductor, which has a single filament drawing process and multi-filament drawing process, has a defect like sausaging and bursting at a center. This study analyzed multi-filament drawing process by FEM, and a defect generated during multi-filament drawing was studied by FEH. Specially, in order to prevent a bursting at a center, this study presented a method that inserts a pure Ag at a center of multi-filament wire

  • An experimental study of hot machining has performed to improve themachinability of Inconel 718. This experiment used plasma arc for heating materials and Whisker-reinforced aluminum oxide ceramic tool insert. An assembled plasma heating system are described and experimental results obtained from bothconventional and plasma hot machining of Iconel 718 are compared. Turning experiments with plasma heating demonstrated the following effectiveness. 1) The cutting force was reduced with increasing surface temperature of workpiece from 450 .deg. C up to 720 .deg. C as much as approximately from 20 to 40%. 2) Surface roughness(Ra) was improved by as much as a factor 2 in case of one pass cutting with new ceramic tool inserts. 3) The depth of cut notchwear at primarycutting tool was singificantly reduced.

  • Inconel 718 is nickel-based and is increasingly being used as a key component in the nuclear, aerospace, and chemical industries which require high fatigue strength and oxidation, because of its excellent corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and wear resistance. It is a heat-resistant alloy which has excellent mechanical properties; however, material deformation, cracking, and shaking occur because of the high cutting temperature accumulated on the cutting surface during cutting processing, and heat accumulated at the insert boundary. Owing to these characteristics, various studies have been conducted, such as developing a tool exclusively for non-deletion, analyzing tool wear, and developing a tool cooling system. However, the optimization of the cutting process is still insufficient. In this study, the optimal process conditions were derived experimentally by cutting conditions according to the insert type during the cutting of Inconel 718.

  • A cylindrical capacitance-type spindle displacement sensor was developed and its effectiveness as a system to monitor cutting forces during hard turning was tested in this research. The sensor was installed between the face of spindle cover and the chucking element and measured pure radial motion of the spindle under the condition with presence of roundness error at measured surface. To prove the effectiveness of the developed system hard aiming tests using ceramic inserts and tool steel as workpiece were conducted. The workpiece was hardened up to 65 Rc. The variations of pure radial motion of the spindle ware measured during the cutting tests. The signals from the sensor showed the same pattern of cutting force variations from the tool dynamometer due to the progress of tool wear. As the flank wear of the ceramic tool increased both static component of cutting forces and the amount of center shift of spindle orbit increased, Results from the research showed that the developed sensor could be utilized as an effective and cheap on-line sensing device to monitor cutting conditions and tool performance in the un-manned machining center.

  • In this study, the discharge characteristic of FTS (Facing Targets Sputtering) apparatus was investigated using metal target paramagnetic and ceramic targets such as Zn, Al, $ZnO:Al(Al_2O_3)$, ITO. Threshold voltage and stable stage of discharge show different with target species. Compare with commercial sputtering apparatus, the FTS apparatus is a high-speed sputter method that promotes ionization of sputter gas by screw and reciprocate moving high-speed ${\gamma}$electrons which arrays two targets facing each other, inserts plasma arresting magnetic field to the parallel direction of the center axis of both targets, discharged from targets and accelerated at the cathode falling area. Especially, we notice that the FTS method using ceramic target has stable discharge characteristic even by DC power source.

  • CVD diamond tools are becoming more widely used in industry as an economic alternative to polycrystalline diamond (PCD) for machining non-ferrous and non-metallic materials. Although CVD diamond-sheet tools have been on the market for several years, diamond-coated carbide inserts have become available only recently, with the successful resolution of long-standing adhesion problems. Diamond coating morphology on the rake surface of the tool affects chip formation favorably, whereas a microscopically rough, faceted morphology on the flank surface of the tool produces a rough workpiece finish. Workpiece finish can be improved by using a coated tool with a larger nose radius. The tool life provided by diamond-coated tools(~30 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thick) can meet or exceed that of PCD tools, depending on the characteristics of the workpiece material. When using diamond-coated carbide tools in milling, a sharp-edged PCD tool should be used in the wiper position of the cutter to minimize workpiece roughness and burr formation.

  • A cylindrical capacitance-type spindle displacement sensor was designed and tested in the hard turning as a way to develop a sensor that can estimate cutting forces without using a tool dynamometer. The displacement sensor was installed between the face of spindle cover and the chucking element, and measured pure radial motion of the spindle. Ceramic inserts and tool steel workpieceof 65 Rc were used during the hard turning tests. The signals from the sensor showed the same pattern of cutting force variations as those from the tool dynamometer. The research results showed that the developed sensor could be utilized as an effective and cheap on-line sensing device to estimate cutting forces.

  • Top of the alumina body which is made according to plan has been printed using a screen printer equipment in order to print an electrode pattern. The electrode is connected with the quartz crystal oscillator of the piezoelectricity method which has a piezoelectric characteristic. The pressure contact department has been experimented using three type of the teflon. The teflon is good for pressure delivery vector but it is bad restitution. So we devised the structure which inserts the metal in the teflon. Bottom of the module is connected with the signal processing department which is planned in advance and then has investigated to characteristic. Therefore we have got the best output-voltage and frequency characteristic follows in the pressure.

  • Composites of Si$_3$N$_4$-SiC containing up to 30 wt% of dispersed SiC particles were fabricated via hot-pressing with an oxynitride glass. To determine the effect of sintering time and SiC content on the mechanical properties and the cutting performance, the composites with fixed 8hr-sintering time and 20 wt% SiC content were fabricated and tested. Fracture toughness of the composites increased with increasing sintering time, while the hardness increased as the SiC content increased up to 20 wt%. The hardness of the composites was relatively independent of the grain size and the sintered density. For machining heat-treated AISI4140, the insert with 20 wt% SiC sintered for 8hr showed the longest tool life while the insert with 20 wt% SiC sintered for 12hr showed the longest tool life for machining gray cast iron. An effort was made to relate the mechanical properties, such as hardness, fracture toughness and wear resistance coefficient with the tool life. However, no apparent relationship was found between them. It may be stated that tool life is affected by not only the mechanical properties but also other properties such as surface roughness, density, grian size and the number of the inherent defects in the inserts.

  • The mechanical property and cutting performance of the cutting tools coated with nanoscale nyktukatered nitride film have been investigated. $Ti_{0.54}Al_{0.46}N-CrN$ and $Ti_{0.84}Al_{0.16}N-NlN$ systems, which showed super-lattice in nanoscale multilayered coating, were deposited on WC-Co insert by UBM sputtering, The superlattice coatings with different bilayer periods were manufactured by controlling deposition parameters. The superlattice formation and hardness of the nanoscale multilayered nitride film and the cutting performance of the insert coated with the film were examined. The hardness and cutting performance were dependent on the bilayer periods of the coatings. The flank wear of the inserts with superlattice coatings were decreased over $20\%$, compared to those of commonly used cutting tools coated with TiAIN single phase.
