  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess new three-dimensional (3D) cephalometric variables, and to evaluate the relationships among skeletal and dentoalveolar variables through 3D cephalometric analysis. Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were acquired from 38 young adults (18 men and 20 women; $22.6{\pm}3.2$ years) with normal occlusion. Thirty-five landmarks were digitized on the 3D-rendered views. Several measurements were obtained for selected landmarks. Correlations among different variables were calculated by means of Pearson's correlation coefficient values. Results: The body of the mandible had a longer curve length in men ($102.3{\pm}4.4$ mm) than in women ($94.5{\pm}4.7$ mm) (p < 0.001), but there was no significant difference in the maxillary basal curve length. Men had significantly larger facial dimensions, whereas women had a larger gonial angle ($117.0{\pm}4.0$ vs. $113.8{\pm}3.3$; p < 0.001). Strong-to-moderate correlation values were found among the vertical and transverse variables (r = 0.71 to 0.51). Conclusions: The normative values of new 3D cephalometric parameters, including the maxillary and mandibular curve length, were obtained. Strong-to-moderate correlation values were found among several vertical and transverse variables through 3D cephalometric analysis. This method of cephalometric analyses can be useful in diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with dentofacial deformities.

  • The author has carried out the statistical standards on liner and angular measurements of sells turcica in 244 normal Korean of various age group by means of lateral cephalometric radiography. The results were as follows; 1. The linear measurements between Ant-Post distance and distance from the tip of tuberculum of sellae to posterior clinoid process were obtained 14.81mm, 9.85mm in the age of 5 years old male and 14.44mm, 9.52mm in female, respectively. There was no outstanding difference with age, but more predominant in female than male. 2. The linear measurements of inferior depth show somewhat increases but no changes in superior depth. 3. It has been showed that the greatest width revealed significant increment beyond 15 years old of both sexes in Korean. 4. None of the significant difference in angular measurement was found with age, but angulation for dorsum sellae decreased after 15 years of male. 5. Generally speaking, increment rates of female in each items were greater than male.

  • This study was undertaken to establish the cephalometric standards, using lateral cephalometric roentgenograms of 48 male and 53 female Korean adults with normal occlusion and acceptable profile. By Cohen's method, measurement of depth was taken parallel to the FH plane and expressed as a percentage of the cranial base depth (BA-N). And vertical height was measured along the line perpendicular to the FH plane and expressed as a percentage of the anterior face height (N-M). The following conclusions were obtained: 1) Means and standard deviations of craniofacial proportions of Korean adults were tabulated. 2) Cranial babe depth of male was greater than that of female. 3) The proportionate depth of the middle face was greater in female than in male. 4) The proportionate total anterior face height was greater in male than in female. And it was greater in Korean than in the white.

  • The morphology and growth changes of the Craniofacial Complex are important in orthodontics and cephalometrics for analysis and evaluation of facial bone growth are widely used. The author analyzed the data using lateral cephalometric roentgenogram of 75 Korean male and 50 Korean females age of 6 to 10 with normal occlusion to provide informations-relative rates of facial bone growth of Korean which is to be contributed in Korean standard. The results were as follows: 1. Means, standard deviation and coefficient of variation of Korean children were obtained. 2. The item which showed significent difference between male and female was craniofacial height in absolute dimension. 9. No difference of sex was showed in increment of craniofacial height and depth. 4. Among the craniofacial depth increments, the lower facial depth dimension increased most, midfacial depth dimension increased less, and cranial depth dimension increased the least. 5. The horizontal body of mandible showed rapid growing tendency more than did the ascending ramus.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to provide sex-matched three-dimensional (3D) statistical shape models of the mandible, which would provide cephalometric parameters for 3D treatment planning and cephalometric measurements in orthognathic surgery. Materials and Methods: The subjects used to create the 3D shape models of the mandible included 23 males and 23 females. The mandibles were segmented semi-automatically from 3D facial CT images. Each individual mandible shape was reconstructed as a 3D surface model, which was parameterized to establish correspondence between different individual surfaces. The principal component analysis (PCA) applied to all mandible shapes produced a mean model and characteristic models of variation. The cephalometric parameters were measured directly from the mean models to evaluate the 3D shape models. The means of the measured parameters were compared with those from other conventional studies. The male and female 3D statistical mean models were developed from 23 individual mandibles, respectively. Results: The male and female characteristic shapes of variation produced by PCA showed a large variability included in the individual mandibles. The cephalometric measurements from the developed models were very close to those from some conventional studies. Conclusion: We described the construction of 3D mandibular shape models and presented the application of the 3D mandibular template in cephalometric measurements. Optimal reference models determined from variations produced by PCA could be used for craniofacial patients with various types of skeletal shape.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the growth changes of craniofacial complex and to establish Korean norms by McNamara's cephalometric analysis. Lateral cephalograms were obtained from males and females with normal occlusion & acceptable profiles in 9-21 years of age. The lateral cephalograms of males & females in 9-13 years of age were serial cephalometric radiograms which were taken at 2 year interval. 11 landmarks, 10 planes and 3 angles were plotted and measured linearly and angularly. The results were as follows: 1. The author made the tables of means, standard deviations in each item, sex, age. 2. During 9-13 years of age, annual growth increments of effective maxillary length, effective mandibular length and lower anterior facial height were 1.90, 2.89 and 0.99mm. 3. The prediction tabulation was made in an attempt to predict effective mandibular length & lower anterior facial height derived from effective maxillary length.
