Uplift phenomenon occurs when the apparent unit weight of buried geo-structures becomes smaller than that of the liquefied backfill due to the increase of an excess pore water pressure during strong earthquakes. In order to explain the relationship between the uplift displacement of the buried geo-structures and the increase of the excess pore water pressure ratio in backfill, dynamic centrifuge model tests are conducted. In the present study, primary and secondary factors against uplift behavior of the buried geo-structures are considered in the dynamic centrifuge model tests. Among these factors, the most important factors affecting the increase in the excess pore water pressure ratio were the ground water depth, the relative density of backfill, and the amplitude of the input acceleration, which were also largely affect the uplift amount of the buried geo-structures.

This study aims to analyze seismic responses of suction foundations for offshore wind turbine. For this purpose, dynamic centrifuge model tests were carried out. The skirt length of the suction foundation is a critical element for bearing mechanism against environmental loads. Thus, dynamic centrifuge model tests were performed and analyzed for three suction foundation models with the ratios of skirt length to suction foundation diameter of 0.5, 0.75, and 1 installed in dense sand. As results, the acceleration amplification at the suction foundation, residual settlement, and residual tilting angle were compared.
In this study, the behavior of unpropped diaphragm walls on decomposed granite soil was investigated through centrifugal and numerical modelling. Centrifuge model tests were performed by changing the interval distance of surcharge. Excavation was simulated during the centrifuge tests by operating a solenoid valve that allowed the zinc chloride solution to drain from the excavation. In these tests, ground deformation, wall displacement and bending moment induced by excavation were measured. FLAC program which can be able to apply far most geotechnical problems was used in the numerical analysis. In numerical simulation, Mohr-Coulomb model fur the ground model, an elastic model for diaphragm wall were used for two dimensional plane strain condition. From the results of model tests, failure surface was straight line type, the ground of retained side inside failure line had downward displacement to the direction of the wall, and finally the failure was made by the rotation of the wall. The angle of failure line was about 67 ∼ 74$^{\circ}$, greater than calculated value. The locations of the maximum ground settlement obtained from model tests and analysis results are in good agreements. The displacement of wall and the change of the embedment depth is likely to have linear relationship.
A series of centrifuge model tests were conducted to investigate the behavior of piled bridge abutments subjected to lateral soil movements induced by approach embankments. The effect of clay layer depth and the rate of embankment construction on piled bridge abutments are the main focus of this study. Tests were performed for two loading types: (1) incremental loading applied in six lifts to the final embankment height; (2) instant loading corresponding to the final embankment height applied in one lift quickly. A variety of instrumentations such as LVDTs, strain gauges, earth pressure transducers, and pore pressure transducers are installed in designed positions in order to clarify the soil-pile interaction and the short- and long-term behavior for piled bridge abutments adjacent to surcharge loads. Based on the results of a series of centrifuge model tests, the distribution of lateral flow induced by staged embankment construction has trapezoidal distribution. The maximum lateral soil pressure is about 0.75$\gamma$H at surcharge loading stage, and about 0.35 $\gamma$H at over 80% consolidated stage.
Dynamic centrifuge model test was conducted to evaluate the dynamic stability of the pile-supported slab track method during dynamic railway loading and earthquake loading. The centrifuge tests were carried out for various condition of embankment height and soft ground depth. Based on test results, we found that the bending moment was increased with embankment height and decreased with soft ground depth. In addition, it was confirmed that the pile-supported slab track system could have dynamic stability for short-period seismic loading. However, in case of long-period seismic loading, such as Hachinohe earthquake, the observed maximum bending moment reached to pile cracking moment at the return period of 2,400 year earthquake. The criterion of ratio between embankment height and soft ground depth was suggested for dynamic stability of pile-supported slab track system.
The coupled soil-pile-structure seismic response is recently in the spotlight of researchers because of its extensive applications in the different fields of engineering such as bridges, offshore platforms, wind turbines, and buildings. In this paper, a simple analytical model is developed to evaluate the dynamic performance of seismically isolated bridges considering triple interactions of soil, piles, and bridges simultaneously. Novel expressions are proposed to present the dynamic behavior of pile groups in inhomogeneous soils with various shear modulus along with depth. Both cohesive and cohesionless soil deposits can be simulated by this analytical model with a generalized function of varied shear modulus along the soil depth belonging to an inhomogeneous stratum. The methodology is discussed in detail and validated by rigorous dynamic solution of 3D continuum modeling, and time history analysis of centrifuge tests. The proposed analytical model accuracy is guaranteed by the acceptable agreement between the experimental/numerical and analytical results. A comparison of the proposed linear model results with nonlinear centrifuge tests showed that during moderate (frequent) earthquakes the relative differences in responses of the superstructure and the pile cap can be ignored. However, during strong excitations, the response calculated in the linear time history analysis is always lower than the real conditions with the nonlinear behavior of the soil-pile-bridge system. The current simple and efficient method provides the accuracy and the least computational costs in comparison to the full three-dimensional analyses.
There are two primary causes of the ground movement due to tunnelling in urban areas; firstly the lost ground and secondly the groundwater depression during construction. The groundwater depression was usually not considered as a cause of settlement in previous research works. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the combined effect of these two phenomena on the transverse settlement trough. Centrifuge model tests and numerical analysis were primarily selected as the methodology. The characteristics of settlement trough were analyzed by performing centrifuge model tests where acceleration reached up to 80g condition. Two different types of tunnel models of 180 mm diameter were prepared in order to match the prototype of a large tunnel of 14.4 m diameter. A volume loss model was made to simulate the excavation procedure at different volume loss and a drainage tunnel model was made to simulate the reduction in pore pressure distribution. Numerical analysis was performed using FLAC 2D program in order to analyze the effects of various groundwater depression values on the settlement trough. Unconfined fluid flow condition was selected to develop the phreatic surface and groundwater level on the surface. The settlement troughs obtained in the results were investigated according to the combined effect of excavation and groundwater depression. Subsequently, a new curve is suggested to consider elastic settlement in the modified Gaussian curve. The results show that the effects of groundwater depression are considerable as the settlement trough gets deeper and wider compared to the trough obtained only due to excavation. The relationships of maximum settlement and infection point with the reduced pore pressure at tunnel centerline are also suggested.
In this study, centrifuge model tests with 50 g gravitational condition were performed to evaluate the bearing capacity of very soft ground, improved by spreading geotextile and sand on the surface of ground, for the heavy machinery to be able to access. For undrained shear strength of ground model, prepared with the clay sampled from the field, being in the range of 3.1~11.7 kPa, bearing capacity tests were performed with the model footing and the loading system built to simulate the heavy machinery on the ground model treated with geotextile and sand. Test results were compared with theoretically and numerically evaluated ones. Test results about load-settlement curves showed that the bearing capacity increases with the increase of the undrained shear strength of ground. Punching shear or local shear failure was also observed. For a relatively low undrained shear strength of ground, settlement behavior is found to be crucial to evaluating the trafficability of machinery whereas bearing capacity becomes a dominant factor with the increase of undrained shear strength of ground. The method for assessing the bearing capacity of the ground related to trafficability of machinery is presented by acquiring the regression relationship between the contact pressure of machinery and settlements using load-settlement curves with the change of the undrained shear strength. Furthermore, results of numerical analyses about load-settlement relation are in relatively good agreement with those of centrifuge model test.
This paper is experimental and numerical research about the sliding behavior of cantilever retaining walls resisting surcharge loads. In experimental research, centrifuge model tests at the lg and 40 g-level were performed by changing the location of model footing and its width. Bearing capacity of model footing and characteristics of load-settlement and load-lateral displacement of retaining wall were investigated. Test results of bearing capacity were compared with modified jarquio method, based on the limit equilibrium method with elasticity theory. For the numerical analysis, the commericially available program of FLAC was used by implementing the hyperbolic constitutive relationships to compare with test result about load-settlement and load-displacement of retaining wall, bearing capacity of strip footing.
In this paper, the behaviors of reinforced earth retaining walls according to material properties of reinforcement were performed through the centrifuge model tests. Skin element was used flexible aluminum plate in the process of tests. And reinforcements were used with aluminum foil strips and non -woven polyester sheets. As a result of it, model retaining wall utilizing non-woven polyester sheets than aluminum foil strips was supported at high stress level, and maximum horizontal displacement value of skin element was 0.6H height at model walls. In the other hand, coefficient relation diagram for evaluation of horizontal displacement according to skin element location was proposed using test results.
