In this work the possibility of obtaining a rectilinear motion of bodies partially or totally submerged without using propellers is evaluated. The system propulsion is based on a pair of counter rotating masses that generate the thrust. The fluid-body system has been schematized in order to carry out a very simple model. Using this model an evaluation of the body motion along a longitudinal direction was performed. The motion equations of the system were written and integrated. The external forces applied to the body depend on its velocity in relation to the water. These forces were obtained by fluid dynamic simulations. Regarding the mechanical configuration suggested, the results obtained show that a certain displacement of the body along a fixed direction is obtainable.

The article is focused in three areas. In the first part there are analyzed the adhesion forces at the liquid and solid surface interface. There are shown the measured values of surface energy for different types of surfaces. The value of surface energy is decisive for determining the extent of the surface wettability by the liquid. The second part points to the possible negative effects of partly wettable surfaces, showing susceptibility to cavitation. The third section describes the practical aspects of surface wettability by the liquid. Under the new boundary conditions bases, expressing the effect of adhesion forces, there are determined the centrifugal pump characteristics.
Mean flow and turbulence properties of developing turbulent flows in a 90 degree square bend with span-wise rotation are measured by a hot-wire anemometer. A slanted wire is rotated into 6 orientations and the voltage outputs from them are combined to obtain the mean velocity and the Reynolds stress components. Combined effects of the centrifugal and Coriolis forces due to the curvature and the rotation of the bend on the mean motion and turbulence structures are investigated experimentally. Results show that the two body forces can either enhance or counteract each other depending on the flow direction in the bend.
An analytical procedure on the base of the substructure synthesis and assumed modes method is developed to investigate the flexibility effect of bladed disk assembly on vibrational modes of flexible rotor system. In modeling the system, Coriolis forces, gyroscopic moments, and centrifugal stiffening effects are taken into account. The coupled vibrations between the shaft and bladed disk are then extensively investigated through the numerical simulation of simplified models, with varying the shaft rotational speed and the pretwist and stagger angles of the blade. It is found that the Coriolis and inertia forces and the inertia torque, which are induced by the one nodal diameter modes of the bladed disk and vary depending upon the stagger and pretwist angles, lead to the coupled motions of the shaft and the bladed disk.
In this article, excitation forces due to unbalance mass in a flywheel energy storage system will be discussed, which mainly consists of a composite flywheel and active magnetic bearings and a motor/generator. Unbalance mass causes moments as well as centrifugal forces to the center of the flywheel when the flywheel rotates. The moment excites the flywheel to revolve in the shape of conical revolution and in real operation, the flywheel shows an aspect that conical revolution is a main mode when system failure occurs. Although there are several excitation sources to the flywheel including unbalance mass, an excitation from motor and control issues of the magnetic bearings, we could infer unbalance mass is the main cause of the failure from a comparison between a composite flywheel and a steel flywheel in the same condition. In this of view, excitation forces and moments induced by unbalance mass should be carefully considered in dynamics of the flywheel so that the energy storage system can be operated in more stable conditions.
In this study, the characteristics of the three-dimensional turbulence flow in a rotating square sectioned 90.deg. bend were investigated by numerical simulation. And a dimensionless number, Coriolis force ratio, primarily subjected to the feature of the flow in the rotating 90.deg. bend was obtained as a result of one-dimensional theory. In the simulation study, low Reynolds number ASM developed by Kim(1991) in the square sectioned 180.deg. bend flow was modified in order to consider the rotational effects in the testing flows. In the near wall region of low Reynolds number, four turbulence models were employed and compared in order to find the most appropriate model for the analysis of the rotating 90.deg. bend flow. By comparison of the results with the experimental data, it is shown that low Reynolds number Algebraic Stress Model with rotating terms reflects most correctly the rotational effects. As the results of this study, centrifugal forces associated with the curvature of the bend and Coriolis forces and centripetal forces associated with the rotation affect directly both the mean motion and the turbulent fluctuations. Their actions on the mean flow are to induce a secondary motion while their effects on turbulence are to modify the pressure strain.
0The fields of turbomachinery and electrical generators provide many examples of flow through rotating internal passages. At the practicing Reynolds number, most of the flow motion is three dimensional and highly turbulent. The proper understanding for the characteristics of these turbulent flow is necessary for the design of thermo-fluid machinery of a good efficiency. The flow characteristics in the rotating duct with curvature are very complex in practice due to the curvature and rotational effect of the duct. The understanding of the effect of the curvature on the structure and rotational effect of the duct. The understanding of the effect of the curvature on the structure of turbulence in the curved passage and the characteristics of the flow in a rotating radial straight channel have been well studied separately by many workers. But the combined effects of curvature and rotation on the flow have not been well understood inspite of the importance of the phenomena in the practical design process. In this study, the characteristics of a developing turbulent flow in a square sectioned 90.deg. bend rotating at a constant angular velocity are measured by using hot-wire anemometer to seize the rotational effects on the flow characteristics. As the results of this study, centrifugal forces associated with the curvature of the bend and Coriolis forces and centripetal forces associated with the rotational affect directly both the mean motion and the turbulent fluctuations.
Hot-wire measurements were carried out on the developing turbulent flows subject to plane rate of strain in a rotating curved duct. The cross-section of the curved duct varies from 100mm${\times}$50mm rectangular shape at the bend inlet gradually to the 50mm${\times}$100mm rectangular shape at the bend outlet. Experimental setup consists of the test section of $90^{\circ}$ curved duct, rotating disc of 1.95m diameter, Ag-Ni precision slip ring, automatic traversing mechanism, variable speed motor, centrifugal blower, orifice flowmeter and hot-wire anemometer. Data signals from the rotating curved duct are transmitted through the slip ring to the computer which is located at the outside of the rotating disc. 3-dimensional velocity and 6 Reynold stresses components were obtained from the fluctuating and mean voltage measured by the slant type hot-wire probe rotating into 6 orientations. We investigate the effects of Coriolis and centrifugal forces on the turbulence structure.
