Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a demyelinating and inflammatory condition of the central nervous system, occurring predominantly in white matter. ADEM involving the rhombencephalon without affecting the white matter is very rare. Here, we present an unusual case of ADEM involving only the rhombencephalon in a 4-year-old Asian girl. The patient complained of pain in the right lower extremities, general weakness, ataxia, and dysarthria. The initial brain CT showed subtle ill-defined low-density lesions in the pons and medulla. On brain MRI, T2 high signal intensity (T2-HSI) lesions with mild swelling were present in the pons, both middle cerebellar peduncles, and the anterior medulla. The initial diagnosis was viral encephalitis involving the rhombencephalon. Curiously, a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) study revealed no cellularity, and negative viral marker findings. Three weeks later, follow up brain MRI showed that the extent of the T2-HSI lesions in the brain stem had decreased. After reinvestigation, it was found that she had a prior history of upper respiratory infection. In this case, we report the very rare case of a patient showing isolated involvement of the rhombencephalon in ADEM, mimicking viral rhombencephalitis on CT and MR imaging. ADEM can involve unusual sites such as the rhombencephalon in isolation, without involvement of the white matter or deep gray matter and, therefore, should be considered even when it appears in unusual anatomical areas. Thorough history taking is important for making a correct diagnosis.

Optical variability is one way to probe the nature of the central engine of AGN at smaller linear scales, and previous studies have shown that optical variability of AGN is more prevalent at longer timescales and at shorter wavelengths. To understand the properties and physical mechanism of variability, we are performing the KMTNet Active Nuclei Variability Survey (KANVaS). Especially, we investigated intra-night variability of AGN with KMTNet data which observed COSMOS field during 3 separate nights from 2015 to 2016 in B, V, R, and I bands. Each night was composed of 5, 9, and 11 epochs with 20-30 min cadence. To find AGN in the COSMOS field, we applied multi-wavelength selection methods. Using X-ray, mid-infrared, and radio selection methods, 50-60, 130-220, 20-40 number of AGN are detected, respectively. Achieving photometric uncertainty ~0.01mag by differential photometry, we employed a standard time-series analysis tool to identify variable AGN, chi-square test. Preliminary results indicate that there is no evidence of intra-night optical variability of AGN. It is possible that previous studies discovered intra-night variability used inappropriate photometric error. However, main reason seems that our targets have fainter magnitude (higher photometric error) than that of previous studies. To discover variability of AGN, we will investigate longer timescale variability of AGN.
This study was performed to develop the biological treatment technology of wastewater polluted with heavy metals. The lead-tolerant microorganism, Pseudomonas aeruginosa which possessed the ability to accumulate lead, was isolated from the industrial wastewater polluted with various heavy metals. The characteristics of lead accumulation in the cells and the recovery of the lead there from were investigated. Removal rate of lead from the solution containing 100mg/l of lead by the lead-tolerant microorganism was more than 97% at 48 hours after inoculation with the microorganism. A large number of the electron-dense granules were found mainly on the cell wall and cell membrane fractions, when determined by transmission electron microscopy. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that the electron-dense granules were lead complex with the substances binding heavy metals. The lead accumulated into cells was not desorbed by distilled water, but more than 87% of the lead accumulated was desorbed by 0.1M-EDTA. The residues of the cells after combustion at $550^{\circ}C$ amounted to about 30% of the dry weight of the cells. EDS analysis showed that the residues were relatively pure lead compounds containing more than 86% of lead.

The extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation, whose wavelength is from 120 nm down to 10 nm, and the energy from 10 eV up to 124 eV, is widely utilized such as in photoelectron spectroscopy, solar imaging, especially in lithography and soft x-ray microscopy. In this study, we have investigated the plasma diagnostics as well as the debris characteristics between the two types of dense plasma focusing devices with coaxial electrodes of Mather and hypocycloidal pinch (HCP), respectively. The EUV emission intensity, electron temperature and plasma density have been investigated in these cylindrical focused plasma along with the debris characteristics. An input voltage of 5 kV has been applied to the capacitor bank of 1.53 uF and the diode chamber has been filled with Ar gas at pressure ranged from 1 mTorr and 180 mTorr. The inner surface of the cathode was covered by polyacetal insulator. The central anode electrode has been made of tin. The wavelength of the EUV emission has been measured to be in the range of 6~16 nm by a photo-detector (AXUV-100 Zr/C, IRD). The visible emission has also been measured by the spectrometer with the wavelength range of 200~1,100 nm. The electron temperature and plasma density have been measured by the Boltzmann plot and Stark broadening methods, respectively, under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE).
Purpose : This study was performed to compare the diagnostic ability of conventional intraoral radiographs with that of digital subtraction image and to assess the quantifying ability of digital subtraction image for simulated apical root resorption Materials and Methods : Conventional intraoral radiographs and digital images of ten sound maxillary central incisors and those with simulated apical root resorption were taken with varying horizontal and vertical angulations of the x-ray beam. The diagnostic accuracy to detect the lesion was evaluated on conventional intraoral radiographs and digital subtraction images by ROC analysis. The amount of simulated apical root resorption was also estimated on the reconstruction images by Emago/sup (R)/ and compared with actual amount of tooth loss using paired t-test. Results: The diagnostic accuracy of conventional intraoral radiographs to detect the apical root resorption was low (ROC area = 0.6446), and the sensitivity and the specificity of digital subtraction images were 100%, respectively. The calculated amounts of apical root resorption showed no statistically significant difference with the actual amounts of the lesion (p>0.05). Conclusion: Digital subtraction radiography is powerful tool to detect the small apical root resorption, and quantitative analysis of small amounts of the lesion can be evaluated by digital subtraction radiography.
Low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs) have been generally regarded to be powered by active galactic nuclei (AGNs), yet still a number of alternative explanations on the origin of LINER emission are suggested; for example, planetary nebulae nuclei of massive stars, supernovae shocks from death of massive stars, and old stellar populations. Interestingly, a majority of recent star formation early-type galaxies (ETGs) in local universe presents such LINER emission lines. Given that situation, revealing the true nature of LINERs is a crucial step to constrain the evolution path to quiescent ETGs. To resolve the issue, we use Keck/LRIS to obtain spatially resolved spectra on a carefully selected ETG. The ETG SDSS J091628.05+420818.7 at redshift z ~ 0.024 shows modest LINER emission line features without any detection of 21 cm radio continuum nor X-ray emission. We perform a stellar continuum subtraction and measure emission line strengths and their uncertainties for each spectrum from five apertures along the slit with size of 1 arcsecond (~0.5 kpc). We find that extended spatial distributions of four emission lines $H{\alpha}$, $H{\beta}$, [OIII]${\lambda}5007$, and [NII]${\lambda}6583$, and they can be explained by central emission blurring effect. We conclude that the emissions seem to be centrally concentrated, indicating the AGN-nature of LINERs.
β-Ketoacyl acyl carrier protein synthase (KAS) III is a particularly attractive target in the type II fatty acid synthetic pathway, since it is central to the initiation of fatty acid synthesis. Enterococcus faecalis, a Grampositive bacterium, is one of the major causes of hospital acquired infections. The rise of multidrug-resistant of most bacteria requires the development of new antibiotics, such as inhibition of the KAS III. In order to block the fatty acid synthesis by inhibition of KAS III, at first, three dimensional structure of Enterococcus faecalis KAS III (efKAS III) was determined by comparative homology modeling using MODELLER based on x-ray structure of Staphylococcus aureus KAS III (saKAS III) which is a gram-positive bacteria and is 36.1% identical in amino acid sequences with efKAS III. Since His-Asn-Cys catalytic triad is conserved in efKAS III and saKAS III, substrate specificity of efKAS III and saKAS III and the size of primer binding pocket of these two proteins are expected to be similar. Ligand docking study of efKAS III with naringenin and apigenin showed that naringenin docked more strongly with efKAS III than apigenin, resulting in the intensive hydrogen bond network between naringenin and efKAS III. Also, only naringenin showed antibacterial activity against E. faecalis at 256 μg/mL. This study may give practical implications of flavonoids for antimicrobial effects against E. faecalis.
New di-N-cyanomethylated tetraaza macrocycle 2.13-bis(cyanomethyl)-5.16-dimethyl-2,6,13,17-tetraazatricyclo[$16.4.0.0^7.12$]docosane $(L^2)$ has been prepared by the reaction of 3, 14-dimethyl-2,6,13,17-tetraazatricyclo $(L^1)$ with bromoacetonitrile. The square-planar complexes $[ML^2](ClO_4)_2(M=Ni(II)$ or Cu(II) can be prepared by the reaction of $L^2$ with the corresponding metal ion in acetonitrile. The cyanomethyl groups of $[ML^2](ClO_4)_2readily$ react with water to $yield[ML^3](ClO_4)_2$ containing pendant amide groups. The trans-octahedral complexes $[ML^4](ClO_4)_2$, in which two imidate ester groups are coordinated to the metal ion, can be also prepared by the reaction of $[ML^2](ClO_4)_2with$ methanol under mild conditions. The hydrolysis and alcoholysis reactions of $[ML^2](ClO_4)_2are$ promoted by the central metal ion, in spite of the fact that the cyanomethyl group is not involved in intramolecular coordination. The reactions are also promoted by a base such as triethylamine but are retarded by an $acid(HClO_4).Interestingly$, the imidate ester groups of $[ML^4]^2$ are unusually resistant to hydrolysis even in 0.1 M $HCIO_4$ or 0.1 M NaOH aqueous solution. Crystal structure of $[NiL^4](ClO_4)_2shows$ that the Ni-N (pendant imidate ester group) bond is rlatively strong; the Ni-N bond distance is shorter then the Ni-N(tertiary) distance and is similar to the Ni-N (secondary) distance.
The reaction of cis-[Cr([14]-decane)($OH_2)_2]^+$ ([14]-decane = rac-5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-teraazacyclotetradecane) with auxiliary ligands {$L_a$ = isothiocyanate ($NCS^-$), azide ($N3^-$) or chloroacetate(caa)} leads to a new cis-[Cr([14]-decane)($NCS)_2]ClO_4{\cdot}H_2O$ (1), cis-[Cr([14]-decane)($N_3)_2]ClO_4$ (2) or cis-[Cr([14]-decane)($caa)_2]ClO_4$ (3). These complexes have been characterized by a combination of elemental analysis, conductivity, IR and Vis spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography. Analysis of the crystal structure of cis-[Cr([14]-decane)($NCS)_2]ClO_4{\cdot}H_2O$ reveals that central chromium(III) has a distorted octahedral coordination environment and two $NCS^-$anions are bonded to the chromium(III) ion via the Ndonor atom in the cis positions. The angle $N_{axial}-Cr-N_{axial}$ deviates by 13$^{\circ}$ from the ideal value of 180$^{\circ}$ for a perfect octahedron. The bond angle N-Cr-N between the Cr(III) ion and the two nitrogen atoms of the isothiocyanate ligands is close to 90$^{\circ}$. The bond lengths of Cr-N between the chromium and $NCS^-$groups are 1.964(5) and 2.000(5) $\AA$. They are shorter than those between chromium and nitrogen atoms of the macrocycle. The IR spectra of 1, 2 and 3 display bands at 2073, 1344 and 1684 $cm^{-1}$ attributed to the $NCS^-$, ${N_3}^-$ and caa groups stretching vibrations, respectively.

Mesiodens are supernumerary teeth in the region of the maxillary central incisors, a condition which can lead to disorders of the dentition. Their presence may lead to disorders, such as delay in eruption of permanent teeth, development of dentigerous cysts, resorption of adjacent roots and eruption of a supernumerary tooth into nasal cavity. The optimal time for surgical intervention is controversial. Early diagnosis is important so as to enable good prognosis. Diagnosis primarily depends on x-ray films. Panorama film, occlusal film, periapical film have been used for detection of mesiodens. But, all of them have disadvantages. $SCANORA^{(R)}$ is a multimodal radiology system which utilizes the principles of narrow beam radiology and spiral tomography. Pre-programmed imaging procedure are provided for many dental situations An optional personal computer can be connected into the unit to help design the examination. We report two cases diagnosed by $SCANORA^{(R)}$. When compared with tube shift technique, it is simple and exact method of detecting mesiodens.
