  • Pediatric central nervous system (CNS) vascular malformations are a group of abnormal blood vessel formations within the brain or spinal cord in children. The most crucial point of pediatric CNS vascular malformation is that no golden standard classifications exist. In addition, there is a big gap in knowledge and the viewpoint of clinicians, radiologists, and pathologists. In addition, many genes associated with pediatric CNS vascular malformation, such as Sturge-Weber-Dimitri syndrome with guanine nucleotide-binding protein G(q) subunit alpha (GNAQ) gene mutation, and cavernous malformations with cerebral cavernous malformations 1 (CCM1), CCM2, and CCM3 gene mutation, were recently revealed. For proper therapeutic approaches, we must understand the lesions' characterizations in anatomical, morphological, and functional views. In this review, the author would like to provide basic pediatric CNS vascular malformation concepts with understandable diagrams. Thus, the author hopes that it might be helpful for the proper diagnosis and treatment of CNS pediatric vascular malformations.

  • Globally, civil infrastructures are deteriorating at an alarming rate caused by overuse, overloading, aging, damage or failure due to natural or man-made hazards. With such a vast network of deteriorating infrastructure, there is a growing interest in continuous monitoring technologies. In order to provide a true distributed sensor and control system for civil structures, we are developing a Structural Nervous System that mimics key attributes of a human nervous system. This nervous system is made up of building blocks that are designed based on mechanoreceptors as a fundamentally new approach for the development of a structural health monitoring and diagnostic system that utilizes the recently developed piezo-fibers capable of sensing and actuation. In particular, our research has been focused on producing a sensory nervous system for civil structures by using piezo-fibers as sensory receptors, nerve fibers, neuronal pools, and spinocervical tract to the nodal and central processing units. This paper presents up to date results of our research, including the design and analysis of the structural nervous system.

  • Acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) is a subtype of Guillain-Barre syndrome and characterized by selective involvement of motor fibers. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a demyelinating disease of central nervous system. The coincidence of central and peripheral nervous system involvement has been reported rarely. We described a 37-year-old male patient presented with fever and altered consciousness. The examination of cerebrospinal fluid and brain magnetic resonance imaging was compatible with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. Several days after admissionb his mentality was improved but quadriparesis, multiple cranial neuropathies, and areflexia were detected. Electrophysiologic studies suggested axonal form of motor dominant polyneuropathy. We report a case of acute motor axonal neuropathy combined with ADEM. We consider that this case is an example of simultaneous immunologic process to the common pathogenic epitope of central nervous system and peripheral nervous system.

  • In order to investigate pharmacological properties of ι -muscone, effects of ι-muscone and musk on cerebral ischemia and central nervous system were compared. Cerebral ischemia insult was performed using unilateral carotid artery occlusion in Mongolian gerbils. The histological observations showed a preventive effect of the ι-muscone treatment with ischemia-induced brain damage. The ATP in brain tissue was decreased in vehicle-treated ischemic gerbils. This decrease was prevented by the ι-muscone treatment. In contrast to what was seen with ATP, the lactate and lipid peroxide were both elevated in vehicle-treated ischemic gerbils.˙ This elevation was prevented by the ι-muscone treatment. While ι-muscone had no effects on the hexobarbital-induced sleeping time and the convulsions induced by electric shock, pentetrazol and strychnine, it had effect on rotarod test and spontaneous activity test. Respiration rate and depth were increased by the ι-muscone treatment. Furthermore, ι-muscone showed anti-stress effect. Our findings suggest that the pharmacological profile of ι-muscone on cerebral ischemia and central nervous system are similar to that of musk.

  • Rutaecarpine is one of quinazolinocarboline alkaloids found in Evodia rutaecarpa, a Rutaceous plant and it has shown various biological effects including antiinflammation. However, the effect of rutaecarpine on nervous system was not reported yet. In this study we investigated the general pharmacology of rutaecalpine on the central nervous system. Rutaecapine (4O and 400 mg/kg) did not change chemoshock induced by pentylenetetrazole. However, oral administration of rutaecarpine altered motor coordination examined by rotarod test, pentobarbital-induced sleeping time and acetic acid-induced writhing syndrome in mice at the doses of 40 and 400 mg/kg. Rutaecarpine also induced hypothermia in mice at both doses. The results suggest that rutaecapine possesses neuromodulating activities on central nervous system in addition to the various biological effects on the Periphery.

  • The purpose of this study is to evalute the diagnostic value of the brain scanning and compare the diagnostic accuracy between the scan and carotid angiography. 109 cases which are proved by specific method to each disease, are analized to evalute the diagnostic value of the brain scanning. The 70 cases among the proven 109 case are performed both the scanning and the arteriography and analized to compare the accuracy between the scanning and the arteriography. The results are as follows; 1. The diagnostic accuracy of the brain scanning in the diseases of the central nervous system is 64.2%. 2. The diagnostic accuracy of the brain scanning in the brain tumor is 88%, especially brain abscess. glioma, glioblastoma multiforme, menirgioma and metastic tumor show high positive rate. 3. The diagnostic accuracy in the disease of the brain vessels is 54 %. 4. The comparison of the diagnostic value between the scanning and the arteriography is as follows; 1) The diagnostic value in all diseases of the central nervous system is nearly equal. 2) The diagnostic accuracy in the intracranial tumor is slightly higher in the brain scanning (90.9%) than in the arteriography (81.8%). 3) The diagnostic accuracy in the disease of the brain vessel is higher in the arteriography (77.3%) than in the scanning (54.5%). 5) The diagnostic value when combining the scanning and the arteriography, is 83% in the all central nervous system-lesions, 97% in the cranial tumor and 81.8% in the disease of the central nervous system-vessel. The brain scanning is simple and safe procedure, and moreover has excellent diagnostic value in the diagnosis of the central nervous system lesion.
