Evaluating the Degree of Macrodispersion of Carbon Nanotubes using UV-VIS-NIR Absorption Spectroscopy

  • We measured the degree of macrodispersion of the various single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using UV-VIS-NIR absorption spectroscopy. CNTs were dispersed with SDS of 2 wt % in deionized water using the homogenizer and then were further centrifugated at 6000 g for 10 min. The degree of macrodispersion, expressed by $D_m({\lambda})=A_a({\lambda})/A_b({\lambda})^*100$ (%), where ${\lambda}$ is the wavelength and $A_a({\lambda})$ and $A_b({\lambda})$ are the absorbance of the sample after and before centrifugation, respectively. In the case of MWCNTs, we evaluated the degree of macrodispersion by the average degree of macrodispersion ($D_m({\lambda})$) between 1000 and 1200 nm. The degree of macrodispersion of SWCNTs was evaluated at the wavelength in which van Hove singularity-related transition regions were excluded, i.e., the range was chosen between ${E_{11}}^S$ and ${E_{22}}^S$ peaks. We have estimated six samples with the same method. The standard deviation of each sample was lower than 5. Therefore, we presented a reliable evaluation method for the macrodispersion of CNTs for standardization.

NEW OPTICALLY TRANSPARENT MATERIALS FOR TRANSPARENT ELECTRONICS AND DISPLAYS

  • Optically transparent and flexible electronic circuits and displays are attractive for next-generation visual technologies, including windshield displays, head-mounted displays, and transparent screen monitors. Here we report on the fabrication of transparent transistors and circuits based on the combination of nanoscopic dielectrics and organic, inorganic, or hybrid semiconductors. Furthermore, the first demonstration of a transparent and flexible AMOLED display driven solely by $In_2O_3$ nanowire transistors (NWTs) is reported. The display region exhibits an optical transmittance of ~35% and a green peak luminance of ${\sim}300\;cd/m^2$. These results indicate that NWT-based drive circuits are attractive for fully transparent display technologies.

  • Nanobiotechnology, the interdisciplinary area at the crossroad of biotechnology and nanoscience, combines contributions from molecular and cell biology, chemisty, material science, and physics in an attempt to understand the behavior of nanobiomaterials, their development and applications. At present, nanobiotechnology is believed to hold great promise for improving health and prolonging life, faciliating biomarker discovery, molecular diagnostics, discovery of novel drugs and drug delivery, which are important basic components of biomedical science. In the recent trend of nanobiotechnology, this review is intended to provide a better understanding of nanobiotechnology in its applications and perspectives, separating this integration technology into three parts such as nanobiochip/sensor, nanobiomaterials, and nanobioanalysis in order to hopefully gain insights into why size matters, how nano-materials and -devices can be engineered.

  • It is commonly found that liquid crystals stored in a common environment degrade with time, trapping more and more ion impurity in the materials. In this paper, we demonstrate how the electrical property of an old batch of liquid crystal can be effectively restored by a novel regenerative agent.

A Magneto-Optic Waveguide Isolator Using Multimode Interference Effect

  • We have investigated an optical waveguide isolator with a multimode interference section by wafer direct bonding, operating at a wavelength $1.55\;{\mu}m$. In order to fabricate the device for monolithic integration, the wafer direct bonding between a magnetic garnet material as a cladding layer and a semiconductor guiding layer has been achieved. We found that wafer direct bonding between InP and GGG $(Gd_3Ga_5O_{12})$ is effective for the integration of a waveguide optical isolator. The isolation ratio was obtained to be 2.9 dB in the device.

  • Human exposure to nano-sized particles (NSP) has increased over the last century with anthropogenic sources, and the rapid development of nanotechnology becomes an another source of such exposure. Information regarding the safety of nanotechnology and its product, nanoparticles, is urgently needed when assuming exposure through inhalation, oral intake, and penetration across skin is ever increasing as growing nanotechnology rapidly. The recent advancement of biokinetic studies with NSP and newer epidemiologic and toxicologic studies with ultrafine particles can be the basis for the nanotoxicology. Some concepts of nanotoxicology can be known from the results of these results. Specific small size of NSP, when inhaled, facilitates deposition by difusional mechanism in all regions of the respiratory tract and uptake into cells, ranscytosis across epithelial and endothelial cells into the blood and lymph circulation to reach target sites. Translocation along axons and dendrites of neuron makes an access to CNS and ganglia. These biokinetics are dependent on NSP surface chemistry. Risk assessments of NSP include appropriate and relevant doses/concentration selections, the increase effects in the organism and the benefits of possible desirable effects. An interdisciplinary team approach is desirable for nanotoxicology research and an appropriate risk assessment.

  • 나노의약품(Nanomedicine)은 나노기술이 접목된 신기능성 의약품을 의미하며 빠르게 발전하고 있는 신생 분야이다. 아직 상용화된 나노의약품은 많지 않지만 최근 나노기술이 접목된 진단 및 치료제제가 속속 개발되면서 기존 의약품을 대체하는 추세에 있다. 나노의약품 연구는 지난 10여년 동안 미국과 유럽을 중심으로 활발히 진행되었으며, 그 결과로 2000년대에 접어서면서 나노의약품 관련 특허 및 논문의 수가 급속히 증가하고 있다. 본 총설에서는 탄소 나노소재, 고분자 약물전달 시스템, 진단영상 소재 등과 같은 대표적인 나노의약품의 연구개발 동향을 소개하고 있다.

  • 전세계적으로 화석에너지의 고갈로 인한 환경문제의 도래와 에너지 부족문제를 해결하기 위하여, 다양한 각도에서 태양전지의 개발이 추진되고 있다. 그 중에서도 유연염료감응태양전지의 개발은 그 활용도가 높고, 낮은 생산단가로 인하여 그 상용화에 더욱 가까운 연구 테마라고 하겠다. 여기서는 유연태양전지 분야의 연구 동향 및 최신 기술 및 재료들을 소개함으로써 앞으로의 연구방향을 제시하고자 한다.
