Diamond films were deposited on the cemented tungsten carbide WC-Co cutting insert substrates by using both microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition(MWPCVD) and radio frequency plasma chemical vapor deposition (RFPCVD) from $CH_4$$-H_2$$-O_2$ gas mixture. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques were used to investigate the microstructure and phase analysis of the materials and Raman spectrometry was used to characterize the quality of the diamond coating. Diamond films deposited using MWPCVD from $CH_4$$-H_2$$-O_2$ gas mixture show a dense, uniform, well faceted and polycrystalline morphology. The compressive stress in the diamond film was estimated to be (1.0∼3.6)$\pm$0.9 GPa. Diamond films which were deposited on the WC-Co cutting insert substrates by RFPCVD from $CH_4$$-H_2$$-O_2$ gas mixture show relatively good adhesion, very uniform, dense and polycrystalline morphology.
Because of its unique properties, tungsten is a strategic and rare metal used in various industrial applications. However, the world's annual production of tungsten is only 84000 t. Ammonium paratungstate (APT), which is used as the main intermediate in industrial tungsten production, is usually obtained from tungsten concentrates of wolframite and scheelite by hydrometallurgical treatment. Intermediates such as tungsten trioxide, tungsten blue oxide, tungstic acid, and ammonium metatungstate can be derived from APT by thermal decomposition or chemical attack. Tungsten metal powder is produced through the hydrogen reduction of high-purity tungsten oxides, and tungsten carbide powder is produced by the reaction of tungsten powder and carbon black powder at 1300-1700℃ in a hydrogen atmosphere. Tungsten scrap can be divided into hard and soft scrap based on shape (bulk or powder). It can also be divided into new scrap generated during the production of tungsten-bearing goods and old scrap collected at the end of life. Recycling technologies for tungsten can be divided into four main groups: direct, chemical, and semi-direct recycling, and melting metallurgy. In this review, the current status of tungsten smelting and recycling technologies is discussed.

Tungsten carbide is widely used in carbide tools. However, its production process generates a significant number of end-of-life products and by-products. Therefore, it is necessary to develop efficient recycling methods and investigate the remanufacturing of tungsten carbide using recycled materials. Herein, we have recovered 99.9% of the tungsten in cemented carbide hard scrap as tungsten oxide via an alkali leaching process. Subsequently, using the recovered tungsten oxide as a starting material, tungsten carbide has been produced by employing a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) method. SHS is advantageous as it reduces the reaction time and is energy-efficient. Tungsten carbide with a carbon content of 6.18 wt % and a particle size of 116 nm has been successfully synthesized by optimizing the SHS process parameters, pulverization, and mixing. In this study, a series of processes for the high-efficiency recycling and quality improvement of tungsten-based materials have been developed.

In this study were carried out basic experiments mainly to investigate important reaction mechanism, the reaction temperature, time and the addition amount of Zn in recycling of waste cemented carbide by the zinc bath process. As a result, it was required that the Zn bath reaction was heated more than at 800℃ to accelerate reaction of melted Zn and Co inside of wasted cemented carbide. Furthermore, thickness of the waste cemented carbide was reduced linearly according to increase of reaction time at 700℃ for 0.5~2h in the zinc bath reaction. Also the zinc bath reaction was examined that heating in lower than at 800℃ for 3h and then heated more than at 900℃ for 1h(above 3.0×10 torr-2 vaccum) was suitable to reduce vapour loss amount of Zn in the zinc bath process.

This work analyses the effects of electrical conductivities of dielectric and cobalt amount on output parameters such as metal removal rate and the surface roughness value of cemented carbides cut by wire electrical discharge machining(W-EDM). Especially, the cracking behaviour of W-EDM machined surface and optimal machining condition of three kinds of cemented carbides, which have different chemical composition of tungsten carbide and cobalt are also tested. Experimental result shows that increases in cobalt content and electrical conductivity of the dielectric affect the metal removal rate and substantially worsen the final surface quality as a greater quantity of solidified metal deposits on the eroded surface.

The quality of tool material is very important factor in machining evaluation. The characteristics of tungsten carbide, such as grain size and hardness, and density are depending on the variation of Co composition and WC size. In this study, the non-coated end mill which is made of ultra-fine tungsten carbide is investigated by measuring tool wear and tool lift test. The machining test is conducted with high hardened workpiece under high-speed cutting condition.

The ultra-fine tungsten carbide(WC) powders have been actively used in the cemented carbides industry, because they have excellent mechanical properties such as high hardness, strength, and toughness. In this study, ultra-fine WC-Co alloys powders have been fabricated by thermochemical and thermomechanical process such as spray conversion process or high energy ball milling. The non-coated end-mill which is made of ultra-fine tungsten carbide is investigated by measuring cutting force, tool wear, tool life, and surface roughness profile according to cutting length. The machining test was conducted with high hardened workpiece and their performances are investigated in high speed cutting conditions. Also, the relationship between the machining characteristics and the Co contents are investigated under various high speed cutting conditions.

The accumulation of spent carbide (YG8), not only pollutes the environment but also causes waste of tungsten, cobalt and other rare metal resources. To better address this issue, we proposed a combined electrochemical separation process of low-temperature aqueous solution and high-temperature molten salt for tungsten and cobalt. H2WO4 was obtained from spent carbide in an aqueous solution, and we calcined it to obtain WO3, which was used as a raw material to obtain tungsten by using molten salt electrodeposition. The influence of the current efficiency and the electrochemical behavior of the discharge precipitation of W(VI) were also studied. The calcination results showed that the morphology of WO3 was regular and there were no other impurities. The maximum current efficiency of 82.91% was achieved in a series of electrodeposition experiments. According to XRD and SEM analysis, the recovered product was high purity tungsten, which belongs to the simple cubic crystal system. In the W(VI) reduction mechanism experiments, the electrochemical process of W(VI) in NaCl-Na2WO4-WO3 molten salt was investigated using linear scanning voltammetry (LSV) and chronoamperometry in a three-electrode system. The LSV showed that W(VI) was reduced at the cathode in two steps and the electrode reaction was controlled by diffusion. The fitting results of chronoamperometry showed that the nucleation mechanism of W(VI) was an instantaneous nucleation mode, and the diffusion coefficient was 7.379×10-10 cm2·s-1.

Hard turning process can be defined as a single-point machining process carried out on "hard" materials. The process is intended to replace or limit traditional grinding operations that are expensive, environmentally unfriendly, and inflexible. The purpose of this study is to achieve a systematic understanding of machining characteristics and the effects of machining parameters on cutting force, tool wear shape and chip formation by the outer cutting of a kind of wear resistant tungsten carbide V30. Hard turning experiments were carried out on this alloy using the PCD (Poly Crystalline Diamond), cBN (cubic Boron Nitride) and PcBN (Polycrystalline cubic Boron Nitride) cutting tools. The PcBN and the usual cBN tools were used to be compare with the PCD tool and the dry turning was carried out. The PcBN is attractive as the tool material which replaces the PCD. The tool wear width and cutting force were measured, and the worn tool and chip were observed. The difference of the tool wear mechanism among the three tool materials was investigated.
The characteristics of various important microstructural factors of WC-base hard- metals (cemented carbides) such as the amount of Co metal binder phase, the carbide grain size, the microstructural defects acting as a fracture source, the solid solubility of tungsten in the binder phase affected by the carbon content, the precipitation of $Co_3W$, the domain size of binder phase, the formation of ${\beta}-free$ layer or Co-rich layer and CVD or PVD coated layer, and the effects of these factors on the flexural strength of the hardmetals are reviewed.
