  • It is known that physical and chemical changes of cement hydrates cause problems in the volume stability of concrete. In order to overcome these problems, there is a growing interest in research on mixing technology of cement-based materials and nanomaterials. Among the nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are attracting attention due to their excellent mechanical properties. The CNTs are made of cylindrically shaped graphene sheets. According to the number of sheets, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are classified. Although the SWCNT has superior mechanical properties, the research using MWCNT is vigorous due to the difficulty of marketability and manufacturing, but the research using SWCNT is insufficient. In this study, we investigate the effect of SWCNT on the formation of hydrate of cement paste by observing the microstructure of broken cement paste after measuring the flexural strength of cement paste with SWCNT dispersion.

  • Two sheets of high strength cement paste using ordinary Portland cement and water soluble polymer (polyacrylamide) were made by kneading with a twin roll mill. A carbon fiber layer out between two sheet of the cement paste, and then carbon fiber reinforced high strength cement composites were prepared by pressing them. The mechanical properties of the composites were investigated through the observation of the microstructure and the application of fracture mechanics. When the carbon fiber was added with 0.2 and 0.3wt% to the composites the flexural strength and Young's modulus were about 110∼116MPa and 74∼77GPa respectively, and critical stress intensity was about 3.14MPam1/2. It can be considered that the strength improvement of high strength cement fiber composites may be due to the removal of macropores and the increase of various fracture toughness effects; grain bridging, frictional interlocking, polymer fibril bridging and fiber bridging.

  • This study was performed to investigate the current status, in Korea, of the production of asbestos containing products (ACPs) such as asbestos cement products, asbestos friction materials, asbestos joint sheets, asbestos textile products, and other asbestos-containing products from May 2 to July 30, 2007. The information on ACPs was obtained through written questionnaires from 16 of the 27 companies that produce ACPs in Korea. The production amounts of asbestos containing gaskets were 70 tons in 2004, 90 tons in 2005, and 55 tons in 2006 in 4 companies and that of asbestos friction materials were 435.5 tons in 2004, 540.4 tons in 2005, and 454.3s ton in 2006 in 10 companies. The type and number of ACPs were:- 19 asbestos cement products, produced by 2 companies; 47 asbestos friction materials produced by 18 companies; 12 asbestos joint sheets productes by 4 companies; 18 asbestos textile products from 3 companies, and 6 other asbestos products from 5 companies. The database of ACPs was constructed to include the products name, identification number, name of company, production year, composition, asbestos content (%), usage, specification, and a picture. The database will be used to efficiently identify ACPs and to avoid asbestos exposure in workers and the general population.

  • The objectives are to compare the airborne asbestos concentrations resulted from mitering of abestos cement roof sheets by a high-speed motor and a hand saw, and to monitor whether other workers near the test sites are vulnerable to the fibers exceeding the occupational exposure limit. Four test cases were carried out and altogether 7 personal and 4 area air samples were collected. The NIOSH method 7400 was employed for the air samplings and analysis. Using the phase contrast microscopy, fiber counting was conducted under Rule A. The study showed that the fiber concentration medians for personal air samples gathered from the two tools were 4.11 fibers/cc (ranged: 1.33-12.41 fibers/cc) and 0.13 fibers/cc (ranged: 0.01-5.00 fibers/cc) respectively. The median for the area samples was 0.59 fibers/cc (ranged: 0.14-3.32 fibers/cc). Comparing each study case, the concentration level caused by the high-speed motor saw was more than twice that of the hand saw. According to the area samples, the workers nearby the test site are at risk from high exposure to asbestos.

  • This study investigates the field application, Songdo the # 1st WORLD, on zero-crack construction of the fundamental mass concrete using double bubble sheets and applying low heat mixture. Experimental results of hydration heat analysis showed that crack modulus of concrete incorporating 20% of blast furnace slag cement was 1.0 in 120 hours, representing 50% probability of crack occurrence, thus requiring additional measures. As for a curing method, a specimen insulating two layers of vinyl chloride+double bubble sheets exhibited only $16.5^{\circ}C$ difference between upper and lower sections, and it also showed favorable workability as well as competitive economic side. Therefore it was determined to use it for curing method in this field. For the curing results of practical field, using 2 layers of vinyl chloride+double bubble sheets and applying low heat mixture on the fundamental mass concrete in 3A residential building exhibited less than only $15^{\circ}C$ difference between surface and center section of that in 5 days elapse and less than $20^{\circ}C$ in 9 days. This means that the crack by hydration heat was prevented, and other fields structures also resisted the plastic shrinkage by insulating the vinyl, sinking crack by second temping, even drying shrinkage by the mixture of low unit water. Therefore the crack on the placement has not been found so far, since the construction was started before 6 month.

  • Cellulose fibers, being fairly strong and stiff as well as cheap and plentiful with low energy demand during manufacture, are strong contenders for the reinforcement of cement-based materials. Cellulose fiber-cement composites, generally manufactured by slurry-dewatering procedure, can find applications in the production of flat and corrugated cement sheets and many other thin-sheet cement products. This paper presents the results of an experimental study concerned with the effects of fiber content and moisture conditions on the flexural performance of these composites. An effort was also made to study the effect of pozzolanic admixtures on the flexural performance in different moisture conditions. The test results obtained were analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance in order to derive reliable conclusions. The results generated in this study were indicative of significant effects of fiber content and moisture condition of flexural performance. There is a tendency in flexural strength to increase in increase in fiber content up to 8%: flexural toughness values continue to increase even at higher fiber contents. Moisture content has a significant effect on the flexural performance. There is a tendency in flexural strength to decrease and flexural toughness to increase with increasing moisture content Composites incorporating pozzolans showed an increase in the flexural strength while slightly reducing the flexural toughness and were sensitive to variations in moisture content.

  • Sandwich panel is composed of the facing sheets which support the external load, the cellular core with the low thermal conductivity and the adhesive agent to bond them. The cellular core was produced by binding lightweight cellular aggregates with cement and two types of acrylic base St/BA emulsion were added with a view to improving the workability ion due to high absorption of light weight aggregate and to develope more strength, respectively. This investigation is to comprehend the effect of the addition of two types of St/BA on thermal conductivity, calorific value and exhaustion content of noxious gas in addition re compressive and flexural strength. Flexural strength of the specimen made with St/BA-2 ranged 20kgf/cm2 to 25kgf/cm2 and was about 50% to 100% as high as that of the non-fiber specimen. Thermal conductivity was recorded from 2.0 to 3.0 kcal/mh$^{\circ}C$ and calorific value of St/BA modified specimen was much lower than that of commercial sandwich panel core of EPS and urethane. Careful caution has to be taken because generation of noxious gas such as CO, NO and SO2 tend to increase with addition of polymer cement ratio.

  • In this study, it was experimentally investigated the effectiveness of repair and strengthening methods for RC beams deteriorated under severs enviromental conditions. Polymer cement were employed to restore the sectional loss and aramid fiber-reinforced sheet was used to reinforce the surface subject to tension. Repaired and strengthened reinforced-concrete samples were subjected to loading tests. The tests revealed that the sectional restoration enhanced the loading capability of the sample structures. Additional strengthening with one aramid fiber-reinforced sheet improved 18% of yielding load and 30% of ultimate load of the structure. Reinforcing with two aramid fiber-reinforced sheets brought about an enhancement of 22% of yielding loading and 49% of ultimate load.
