  • Cellulosic fabrics, i.e. rayon, polynosic, and linen were treated with liquid ammonia at -33.4$^{\circ}C$. The fine structures, bending properties, tensile strength, wrinkle recoveries, and dyeing properties of the treated fabrics were studied. Dyeing was carried out with two direct dyes, C. I. Direct Red 2 and Blue 1. The liquid ammonia treatment for three fabrics brought about the transition of crystal lattices and the decrease of crystallinity; transforming cellulose I structure of original linen to cellulose I and III structure, and cellulose II structure of original rayon and polynosic to cellulose II and III structure. Moisture regain of liquid ammonia- treated polynosic and linen was higher than that for untreated, and water absorbency of liquid ammonia-traeated fabrics was all lower than that of untreated. Also, bending properties of treated fabrics were not improved compared with those of untreated ones. The rayon treated with liquid ammonia was increased not only the apparent diffusion coefficient and the rate of dyeing but also equilibrium dye adsortion, whereas polynosic and linen were increased only equilibrium dye adsortion. It is suggested that the pore sizes of liquid ammonia-treated rayon, polynosic, and linen are much smaller than that of liquid ammonia-treated cotton.

  • X-ray diffractograms of the vessel elements and the wood fibers of Quercus variabilis BLUME were recorded and resolved into characteristic reflections of cellulose I. Some differences were observed in the ratio of integrated intensity and crystallinity index between vessel elements and wood fibers. Present results suggest that cellulose crystal structure in the hardwood species was varied with the elements of wood.

  • To research the characteristics of cellulose produced from one strains of Rhizopus(R-B 14) when it acts on the carboxyl methyl cellulose, this experiment was carried out in crude purified cellulose. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The optimum pH of cellulose was from 4. 5 to 5 .5 and the range of its stability to the pH was considerably extensive and it was from 4 to 7. 2. The optimum temperature of cellulose was $50^{\circ}C$ and the activity of it was instantly inactivated at $70^{\circ}C$. 3. The inhibition of the metal ions to the activity of cellulose was as follows; $Hg^{++}$ > $Ag^+$ +/ > $Fe^{+++}$ > $Pb^{++}$. But the activity of cellulose was not affected at all by $Na^+$, $K^+$ and $Mg^{++}$.

  • Dissolving pulp is a low yield(30∼35%) bleached chemical pulp that has a high cellulose content (95% or higher) suitable for use in cellulose derivatives such as rayon, cellulose acetate. This research was studied for dissolving pulp preparation as the raw material of viscose rayon from commertial pulps. (TMP, CP, DIP) In the change of pulp(cellulose) characteristics after sodium hypochlorite and solvolysis treatment. the following results were obtained In the case of sodium hypochlorite pretreatment, we have obtained pulp that high purity cellulose, but degree of polymerization was inclined to decrease less than 170∼240. Comparing sodium hypochlorite pretreatment and solvolysis pretreatment, solvolysis pretreatment is superior to sodium hypochlorite process for making dissolving pulp. We think that the low degree of polymerization of cellulose because of increasing degradation of cellulose during delignification treatment.

  • To improve the blood compatibility of cellulose membrane, 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl-2-(trimethylammonium)ethyl phosphate(MTP), which is a methacrylate with phospholipid polar group, and glycidyl methacrylate(GMA) were grafted simultaneously on the surface of membrane and the biocompatibility of grafted membrane was investigated. There was no difference of permeability between the MTP and GMA-grafted and the original cellulose membrane. The permeation pathway for a solute whose molecular weight was above 10$^{4}$ is maintained after grafting on the surface of membrane. The cellulose membrane grafted with MTP and GMA effectively suppressed thrombogenicity for the rabbit blood. This effect became more clear with increasing the surface distribution of phospholipid polar groups.

  • The color mixture, obtained from Indigo and Japanese pagoda tree, was applied to cellulose fibers such as cotton, linen and rayon to diversify color gamut of natural dyes. The color mixture was tried with two different methods. The first process was that cellulose fibers were dyed with $5{\sim}25%$ owf Japanese pagoda tree solution, and then dyed 1 to 4 times with Indigo. The second process was dyeing 1 to 7 times with Indigo, followed by dyeing with $5{\sim}25%$ owf Japanese pagoda tree solution. K/S value of the dyed fibers with one colorant and color mixture increased in the order of linen, cotton, rayon. It was also found that the first process could give higher K/S values than the second process.

  • The effects of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% dietary cellulose levels on the nutrient utilization in chickens were investigated. Four experimental diets were alternatively given to 8 colostomized White Leghorn cockerels to make a $4{\times}4$ Latin-square design. The diets of 70 g.day were force-fed once a day, and water was given freely. The digestibilities of DM and energy increased linearly with the increase in dietary cellulose level. The digestibilities of ether extract and nitrogen-free extract were not so much influenced by the dietary cellulose level. The digestibility of acid detergent fiber was very low and not influenced by the dietary cellulose level. The digestibility of neutral detergent fiber was not different among the diets containing 5%-15% cellulose, but that of the 20% cellulose diet was diminished. This might be due to the reduction of hemicellulose digestibility. True digestibility and biological value of protein were also not influenced by the dietary cellulose level from 5% to 20%. In conclusion, no ill-effect was found even when the chicken was fed a diet containing 20% of cellulose.

  • Cellulose nanoparticles loaded with vitamin I acetate were prepared by modified spantaneous emulsification solvent diffusion method. After cellulose derivatives were dissolved in mixed acetone/ethanol organic solvent with vitamin E acetate, cellulose nanoparticle suspensions were dispersed in poly(oxyethylene sorbitane monooleate) solution using ultrasonicator. Particle size and loading amount of vitamin I acetate were measured by particle size analyser and UV-spectrometer, respectively. The stability of nanoparticle was determined by measuring the change of the particle size at room temperature for 30 days and the morphology was observed by SEM. Morphology of cellulose nanoparticles was spherical and particle size was not changed at room temperature for 30 days. The optimum condition for the preparation of cellulose nanoparticles was 1% w/v cellulose nitrate with 8% w/v poly(oxyethylene sorbitane monooleate) solution. It showed that particle size and loading amount of vitamin E acetate was 65nm and 71%, respectively.

  • There has been many attempts to develop a method that can regenerate periodontal tissues that were lost due to periodontal diseasd, but none of them was completely successful. This study was designed to investigate the healing and regeneration of periodontal tissue when bone substitutes such as porous replamineform hydroxyapatite and porous resorbable calcium carbonate were used in combination with oxidized cellulose membrane and collagen absorbable hemostat, compared to a control where only oxidized cellulose membrane or collagen absorbable hemostat were used. Chronic periodontitis was induced on mandibular premolars of and adult dog by placing orthodontic elastic ligatures for 10 weeks. After flap operation, the control group were received oxidized cellulose membrane (control- I )or collagen absorbable hemostat (control- II) only, while one experimental group was given either porous replamineform hydroxyapatite or porous resorbable calcium carbonate in addition to oxidized cellulose membrane (Experimental I-A, I-B), and another experimental group was treated by using either porous replamineform hydroxyapatite or porous resorbable calcium carbonate in addition to collagen absorbable hemostat. (Experimental II-A, II-B) After 56 weeks, healing was histologically analyzed with the following results. 1. Apical migration of junctional epithelium was observed only in areas coronal to the notch for both control and experimental group. 2. Inflammatory cell infiltration was not observed in any groups. 3. Oxidized cellulose membrane and collagen absorbable hemostat were completely resorbed. 4. Newly-formed cementum was observed up to the level where junctional epithelium was located, for both control and experimental groups. 5. Bone formation was limited of the middle portion of the notch in the control group, where as experimental groups showed bone formation up to the level of implant materials coronal to the notch. 6. Minute resorption of apically located portions of implanted materials was observed in experimental group I-B and II-B only.

  • It is well known that polymer chemistry started by the study on cellulose. However, the study on cellulose has not made a significant progress after the 2nd World War, because the interest of researchers has directed to the newly developed synthetic polymer science. Recently the situation has been changing as suggested by the creation of a word "Cellulose Renaissance". This change is due to the recognition that cellulose is a renewable resource and a biodegradable, environmentally friendly material. In this lecture I'd like to introduce you some recent topics in cellulose chemistry which were reported by Japanese researchers.
