  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG(ATCC 53103) is one of the best researched probiotic strains in the world. Studies in children have shown that Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG effectively prevents early atopic disease in patients with high risk. The active molecules associated with the immunostimulatory sequence and anti-allergy effects of L. rhamnosus GG have not yet been identified. Unmethylated CpG motifs in bacterial DNA have a mitogenic effect in mouse immune cells, CpG-containing ISS oligodeoxynucleotides are potent Th1 adjuvants, effective in both preventing and reversing Th2-biased immune deviation in allergy models. The genomic DNA of L. rhamnosus GG is a potent inducer of murine B cell and dendritic cell immunoactivation. In L. rhamnosus GG genomic DNA, ID35 shows high activity in ISS assays in both mice and humans. The effects of ID35 result from a unique TTTCGTT motif located at its 5'-end, and its effects are comparable with murine prototype CpG 1826. L. rhamnosus GG is known to secrete proteinaceous pili encoded by the spaCBA gene cluster. The presence of pili structures may be essential for its adhesion to human intestinal mucus, explaining the prolonged duration of intestinal residence of this bacterium, compared to that of non-piliated lactobacilli.

  • A source code is developed on the basis of Berreman's 4$\times$4 matrix formalism for the analysis of polarization transmission characteristics of twisted nematic liquid crystal display. By using the program, the polarization transmission characteristics of liquid crystal cells and polarizers are analyzed. For a normally white twisted nematic liquid crystal cell, we obtained a family of iso-contrast contours which helps to understand the viewing angle characteristics of the liquid crystal display device by using the cell. The program also help us to understand the variation of the degree of polarization as well as the deviation of the state of polarization of the light transmitted through the polarizer commonly used in the LCD according to the change in incidence angle. This result suggests the contrast of the images appearing on the LCD can be limited by the characteristics of the polarizer in addition to the liquid crystal cell.

  • The possibility of improving plating thickness distribution was investigated through quantitative consideration of bipolar electrodes without external power applied. By having the cathode tilted with respect to the anode, the potential distribution in the electrolyte solution adjacent to the cathode is different due to the difference in iR drop due to the path difference to the anode in each region of the cathode. The purpose of this study is to observe the bipolar characteristics in the case of an auxiliary anode for the non-uniform potential distribution of such a Hull cell. In particular, in order to evaluate the possibility of improving the non-uniform thickness distribution of the cathode by utilizing these bipolar characteristics, it was verified through experiments and simulations, and the electric potential and current density distribution around the bipolar electrode were analyzed. The electroplating in a Hull cell was performed for 75 min at a current density of 10 mA/cm2, and the average thickness is about 16 ㎛. The standard deviation of the thickness was 10 ㎛ in the normal Hull cell without using the auxiliary anode, whereas it was 3.5 ㎛ in the case of using the auxiliary cathode. Simulation calculations also showed 8.9 ㎛ and 3.3 ㎛ for each condition, and it was found that the consistency between the experimental and simulation results was relatively high, and the thickness distribution could be improved through using the auxiliary anode by the bipolar phenomenon.

  • Current distribution measurement technique based on a segmented bipolar plate (BP) has been widely adopted to visualize the distribution of current density in a polymer electrolyte membrane. However, a concern is raised how closely the current density of a segmented BP can approach that of a corresponding non-segmented membrane. Therefore, in this paper, the accuracy of the measurement technique is numerically evaluated by applying a three-dimensional, two-phase fuel cell model to a $100\;cm^2$ area fuel cell geometry in which segmented BPs and non-segmented membrane are combined together. The simulation results reveal that the errors between the current densities of the segmented BPs and non-segmented membrane indeed exist, predicting the maximum relative error of 33% near the U-turn regions of the flow-field. The numerical study further illustrates that the erroneous result originates from the BPs segmented non-symmetrically based on the flow channels that allows some currents bypassing flow channels to flow into its neighboring segment. Finally, this paper suggests the optimal way for bipolar plate segmentation that can minimize the deviation of current measured in a segmented BP from that of a corresponding membrane region.

  • Background: We investigated the impact of 0.35 T magnetic field on dose calculation for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) in the ViewRay system (ViewRay Inc.), which features a simultaneous use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to guide radiotherapy for an improved targeting of tumors. Materials and Methods: Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of the effects induced by the 0.35 T magnetic field on various characteristics of SABR plans including the plan qualities and dose calculation for the planning target volume, organs at risk, and outer/inner shells. Therefore, two SABR plans were set up, one with a 0.35 T magnetic field applied during radiotherapy and another in the absence of the field. The dosimetric parameters were calculated in both cases, and the plan quality indices were evaluated using a Monte Carlo algorithm based on a treatment planning system. Results and Discussion: Our findings showed no significant impact on dose calculation under the 0.35 T magnetic field for all analyzed parameters. Nonetheless, a significant enhancement in the dose was calculated on the skin surrounding the tumor when the 0.35 T magnetic field was applied during the radiotherapy. This was attributed to the electron return effect, which results from the deviation of the electrons ejected from tissues upon radiation due to Lorentz forces. These returned electrons re-enter the tissues, causing a local dose increase in the calculated dose. Conclusion: The present study highlights the impact of the 0.35 T magnetic field used for MRI in the ViewRay system for NSCLC SABR treatment, especially on the skin surrounding the tumors.

  • We report on a pumpless cell culture chip in which a constant medium perfusion rate is maintained by balanced droplet dispensing. Previous chips had a decreasing perfusion rate due to the decreasing hydraulic-head difference ${\Delta}h$ between the inlet and drain. However, the present chip maintains a constant medium perfusion rate due to the constant ${\Delta}h$ between the inlet and drain maintained by balanced droplet dispensing. The perfusion rate Q was measured to be 0.1-$0.3{\mu}l$/min with a maximum deviation and error of 9.96% and 6.92%, respectively. In the perfusion culture (Q = 0.1-$0.3{\mu}l$/min), the maximum growth-rate of H358 cells was measured to be $57.8%{\pm}21.1%$ per day, which is 1.9 times higher than that of a static culture. The perfusion culture also resulted in higher cell viability than a static culture. The present chip offers a favorable environment with a high growth-rate and viability and thus has potential for use in the integrated cell culture system.

  • Objective: To investigate the multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) features of fumarate hydratase-deficient renal cell carcinoma (FH-deficient RCC) with germline or somatic mutations, and compare them with those of papillary type II RCC (pRCC type II). Materials and Methods: A total of 24 patients (mean ± standard deviation, 40.4 ± 14.7 years) with pathologically confirmed FH-deficient RCC (15 with germline and 9 with somatic mutations) and 54 patients (58.6 ± 12.6 years) with pRCC type II were enrolled. The MDCT features were retrospectively reviewed and compared between the two entities and mutation subgroups, and were correlated with the clinicopathological findings. Results: All the lesions were unilateral and single. Compared with pRCC type II, FH-deficient RCC was more prevalent among younger patients (40.4 ± 14.7 vs. 58.6 ± 12.6, p < 0.001) and tended to be larger (8.1 ± 4.1 vs. 5.4 ± 3.2, p = 0.002). Cystic solid patterns were more common in FH-deficient RCC (20/24 vs. 16/54, p < 0.001), with 16 of the 20 (80.0%) cystic solid tumors having showed typical polycystic and thin smooth walls and/or septa, with an eccentric solid component. Lymph node (16/24 vs. 16/54, p = 0.003) and distant (11/24 vs. 3/54, p < 0.001) metastases were more frequent in FH-deficient RCC. FH-deficient RCC and pRCC type II showed similar attenuation in the unenhanced phase. The attenuation in the corticomedullary phase (CMP) (76.3% ± 25.0% vs. 60.2 ± 23.6, p = 0.008) and nephrographic phase (NP) (87.7 ± 20.5, vs. 71.2 ± 23.9, p = 0.004), absolute enhancement in CMP (39.0 ± 24.8 vs. 27.1 ± 22.7, p = 0.001) and NP (50.5 ± 20.5 vs. 38.2 ± 21.9, p = 0.001), and relative enhancement ratio to the renal cortex in CMP (0.35 ± 0.26 vs. 0.24 ± 0.19, p = 0.001) and NP (0.43 ± 0.24 vs. 0.29 ± 0.19, p < 0.001) were significantly higher in FH-deficient RCC. No significant difference was found between the FH germline and somatic mutation subgroups in any of the parameters. Conclusion: The MDCT features of FH-deficient RCC were different from those of pRCC type II, whereas there was no statistical difference between the germline and somatic mutation subgroups. A kidney mass with a cystic solid pattern and metastatic tendency, especially in young patients, should be considered for FH-deficient RCC.

  • Replica bit-line technique is used for making enable signal of sense amplifier which accurately tracks bit-line of SRAM. However, threshold voltage variation in the replica bit-line circuit changes the cell current, which results in variation of the sense amplifier enable time, $T_{SAE}$. The variation of $T_{SAE}$ makes the sensing operation unstable. In this paper, in addition to conventional replica bit-line delay ($RBL_{conv}$), dual replica bit-line delay (DRBD) and multi-stage dual replica bit-line delay (MDRBD) which are used for reducing $T_{SAE}$ variation are briefly introduced, and the maximum possible number of on-cell which can satisfy $6{\sigma}$ sensing yield is determined through simulation at a supply voltage of 0.6V with 14nm FinFET technology. As a result, it is observed that performance of DRBD and MDRBD is improved 24.4% and 48.3% than $RBL_{conv}$ and energy consumption is reduced which 8% and 32.4% than $RBL_{conv}$.
