Statement of problem. The effects of surface roughness have not or insufficiently been analyzed on earlier events such as cell adhesion though cell behavior most germane to implant performance is cell adhesion. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate cell adhesion of osteoblast-like cells (MG63) onto three types of titanium disks with varying roughness using the Elisa assay. Materials and methods. Representative disks from each group (SLA, HA, machined) were subjected to surface analysis and surface roughness was measured by the optical interferometer (Accura 2000, Intekplus Co., Seoul, Korea). Following this, MG63 cells were cultured on the titanium disks and released. Cell adhesion measurements using the Elisa assay were performed specifically at three points: after 24, 48, and 72 hours of culture. Results. Among the 3 types of surface analyzed, the SLA surface was the roughest with a Ra value of $1.114{\mu}m$ followed by HA coated surface and machined surface, consecutively. The optical density values for the SLA surface group was significantly higher than that of the machined and HA coated surface groups following 24 and 48 hours of culture. The cell culture on HA coated surface showed significantly higher values compared to the machined surface following 24, 48 and 72 hours of culture. Conclusion. The results suggest that surface treatment of titanium surfaces enhanced cell adhesion of human osteoblast-like cells (MG63).

In this study, we measured the power and temperature of the floating horizontal solar cell in a coastal lagoon and compared with those of ground solar cell and water platform solar cell. Because the bottom surface of the floating horizontal solar cell was contacting the water, cooling effect was expected stronger than other cells. As a result of the measurement, the power of floating horizontal cell was 11.7% higher than that of the ground cell and 15% higher than that of the water platform cell. During the measurement, it was observed that water waves were continuously flowed on the top surface of floating horizontal cell by the wind, and it could be assumed that the cooling effect occurred not only on the bottom surface of the cell but also on the top surface. In order to analyze the cooling effect and power increasing of the horizontal cell in the wave situation, we measured power and temperature of the cell while generating artificial waves in a laboratory equipped with Zenon lamp as a solar simulator. At the height of thewater surface, the power of the cell with waves was 3.7% higherthan without waves and temperature was 4.6℃ lower. At 1 cm and 2 cm below the watersurface, power of the cell with waves was decreased by 14% and 11% than without waves while temperature was same . At 3 cm below the water surface, there was no effect of waves.
Recently, genetic engineering techniques have been used to display various heterologous peptides and proteins (enzyme, antibody, antigen, receptor and fluorescence protein, etc.) on the yeast cell surface. Living cells displaying various enzymes on their surface could be used repeatedly as 'whole cell biocatalysts' like immobilized enzymes. We constructed a yeast based whole cell biocatalyst displaying T. reesei cellobiohydrolase I (CBH I ) on the cell surface and endowed the yeast-cells with the ability to degrade cellulose. By using a cell surface engineering system based on ${\alpha}-agglutinin,$ CBH I was displayed on the cell surface as a fusion protein containing the N-terminal leader peptide encoding a Gly-Ser linker and the $Xpress^{TM}$ epitope. Localization of the fusion protein on the cell surface was confirmed by confocal microscopy. In this study, we report on the genetic immobilization of T. reesei CBH I on the S. cerevisiae and hydrolytic activity of cell surface displayed CBH I.
This research aims to study the effects of the incidence angle and surface temperature on the power generation performance of a thin-film CIGS solar cell for solar powered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The test rig consists of a unit CIGS solar cell is installed on a table whose angle is controlled manually. A K-type thermocouple is attached to the solar cell surface for temperature measurements. A solar module analyzer measures the voltage and current generated from the test solar cell. The solar module analyzer also calculates the maximum solar power and efficiency of the solar cell. All test data are acquired in a PC. Test results show that the solar cell efficiency decreases significantly with increasing incidence angle and increasing surface temperature in general. As the incidence angle increases from 0 degree to 90 degree, the solar cell efficiency decreases by 60%. The solar cell efficiency decreases by 10% with increasing solar cell surface temperature from $20^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$, for exmaple. The direct cooling method of the solar cell using dry ice decreases dramatically the solar cell surface temperature, thus increasing the solar cell efficiency by 15%.
Syndecans, cell surface heparansulfate proteoglycans, have been proposed to act as cell surface receptors and/or coreceptors to play critical roles in multiple cellular functions. However, recent reports suggest that the function of syndecans can be further extended through shedding, a cleavage of extracellular domain. Shedding constitutes an additional level for controlling the function of syndecans, providing a means to attenuate and/or regulate amplitude and duration of syndecan signals by modulating the activity of syndecans as cell surface receptors. Whether these remaining cleavage products are still capable of functioning as cell surface receptors to efficiently transduce signals inside of cells is not clear. However, shedding transforms cell surface receptor syndecans into soluble forms, which, like growth factors, may act as novel ligands to induce cellular responses by association with other cell surface receptors. It is becoming interestingly evident that shed syndecans also contribute significantly to syndecan functions in cancer biology. This review presents current knowledge about syndecan shedding and its functional significance, particularly in the context of cancer.
The early osseointegration of titanium (Ti) dental implants is related to the initial cell morphology. The morphology of the cells (mesenchymal stem cells, MSC) was observed on three different Ti disc surfaces, which were mechanically treated by polishing, blasting, and scratching. A non-directional surface (isotropic texture) was obtained by the blasting of HA grits on cp-Ti discs, and a unidirectional surface (anisotropic texture) was obtained by the scratching of SiC papers. The cell attachment and arrangement in the initial periods were quite similar, but those in the later periods were significantly affected by the texture of the cp-Ti discs. After 1 week, the blasted Ti discs showed non-directional arrangement or spreading of the cells, whereas the scratched cp-Ti discs showed unidirectional properties parallel to the direction of the scratched grooves on the surface. The surface roughness of the cp-Ti discs significantly affects cell proliferation. Cell proliferation on the blasted and scratched surfaces was about 60% and 40% higher compared to the control result (polishing group) after 1 week (P<0.05). Cell proliferation on the blasted and scratched surfaces after 1 week was slightly enhanced with increasing surface roughness. It is believed that the direction of cell attachment and arrangement is closely related to the surface texture of the substrate surfaces, but cell proliferation after a relatively long period of time is directly enhanced by the surface roughness, not by the surface texture.
An oil-degrading yeast, Yarrowia lipolytica 180, exhibits interesting cell surface characteristics under the growth on hydrocarbons. An electron microscopic study revealed that the cells grown on crude oil showed protrusions on the cell surface, and thicker periplasmic space and cell wall than the cell surface, and thicker periplasmic space and cell wall than the cells grown on glucose. Y. lipolytica cells lost its cell hydrophobicity after pronase(0.1 mg/ml) treatment. The strain produced two types of emulsifying materials during the growth on hydrocarbons; one was water-soluble extracellular materials and the other was cell wall-associated materials. Both emulsifying materials at lower concentration (0.12%) enhanced the oil-degrading activity of Moraxella sp. K12-7, which had medium emulsifying activity and negative cell hydrophobicity; however, it inhibited the oil-degrading activity of Pseudomunas sp. K12-5, which had medium emulsifying activity and cell hydrophobicity. These results suggest that the oil-degrading activity of Y. lipolytica 180 is closely associated with cell surface structure, and that a finely controlled application of Y.lipolytica 180 in combination with other oil-degrading microorganisms showed a possible enhancing efficiency of oil degradation.

We investigated response characteristics of twisted nematic (TN) cell with different nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) and cell gap d on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface. High transmittance and fast response time of the TN cell on the rubbed PI surface were achieved by using high birefringence (${\Delta}n$) and low cell gap d. The response time of TN cell on the rubbed PI surface was measured 5.1 ms. The transmittance and response time of the TN cell on the rubbed PI surface decreased with decreasing ${\Delta}nd$.

Blending effects for generating a pretilt angle in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the blended polyimide (PI) of homeotropic and homogeneous alignment surface were studied. Also, we investigated the EO performances for the advanced VA- $\pi$ cell using this homeotropic blended PI surface. A many decrease of tilt angle on the polymer surface to blend homeotropic PI and homogeneous PI with side chain type was measured, and the tilt angle decreased as blended ratio and rubbing strength increase. However, a small decrease of tilt angle on the polymer surface to blend homeotropic PI and homogeneous PI with main chain type was measured. The blended effects for generating a pretilt angle were clearly observed, and the many decrease of tilt angle can be achieved by using the blended PI surface. The electro-optical (EO) characteristics using the advanced VA- $\pi$ cell using the homeotropic blended PI surface than that of conventional VA cell can be improved. We suggest that the developed advanced VA-$\pi$ cell on a homeotropic blended PI surface is a promising technique for the achievement of a fast response time, and a high contrast ratio.
