Due to rapid urbanization around the world, various social problems and side effects are occurring. Accordingly, the creation of smart city is being promoted to improve the quality of life of citizens and promote sustainable urban development. In Korea, visions and strategies for the creation of smart city have been presented for each ministry within the government. But they are proposed from the standpoint of each ministry, not from the national level. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a vision and core strategies at the national level. In this study, the problems of Korea smart city were derived, and a smart city vision was established as a solution. In addition, STEEP analysis was conducted through Korea and overseas smart city status analysis and literature review, and based on this, CLDs (Causal Loop Diagrams) were drawn up to derive major smart city strategies. The smart city vision and major strategies proposed in this study are expected to be helpful in setting the direction for future successful smart city creation.

The wetlands are facing environmental changes such as desiccation that occurs with the passage of time and reduced ecosystem services from wetlands in the city. In order to maintain the ecosystem services provided by wetlands in urban areas, a system thinking about the trade-off phenomenon of ecosystem services occurring as the wetlands undergo environmental changes is needed. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop strategies for wetland design using system thinking approach to enhance the resilience of ecosystem services degraded by the desiccation of wetlands and other disturbances. The objectives of this study include the system boundary and variables. Second, analyzing the dynamics of wetland design strategy. Third, it analyzes the trade-off phenomenon of ecosystem services in terms of the hydrology, hydric soil, and plants strategies to mitigate these effects. Fourth, wetland basic design to improve the resilience of ecosystem services. A wetland in Abuk-Mountain Neighborhood Park, Miryang-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, has been selected as a case study. Causal loop diagrams(CLDs) are used to analyze feedback in the wetland regime. In summary, hydrology, hydric soil, and plants is suggested as system boundaries to design plan. Design strategies for the wetland focused on robustness, redundancy, rapidity, and resourcefulness as a result of CLD analysis are first proposed in order to effectively maintain the wetland regime over the long term. Secondly, in a section related to hydrology, the CLD results show the trade-offs between provisioning-cultural services and regulating services. In order to control these services, a "water cycling system" has been implemented due to its strength in terms of robustness. The CLDs for hydric soil showed the trade-offs between regulating services and supporting services. An "installation of storm drainage for maintaining water levels" was selected due to the strength offered in terms of redundancy and rapidity. The CLDs for plants showed the trade-offs between provisioning - cultural services and regulating services. In order to control the strategic points, the "planting of indigenous vegetation" was suggested given the strength in terms of redundancy. In this study, a wetland design method is proposed that can improve the resilience of wetland ecosystem services by analyzing the dynamics overtime. The results of this research can theoretically be applied to help restore ecosystem services in wetlands using ecological landscape design. In addition, this study will contribute to reducing maintenance costs by improving wetland resilience.

"The Jayeon Madang Development Project("JMDP")" is a project being promoted by the Ministry of Environment to create a cultural space and a natural rest area within the city. Abuksan, located at Abuksan in Gyeongsangnam-do Miryang-si Naeil-dong, has suffered a substantial amount of environmental degradation over time, so the need for ecological restoration made it a natural choice for the location of the JMDP's site. The purpose of this study is to examine ecological restoration design strategies used in Abuksan as part of the JMDP using system dynamics. The national archery center, hole, and arable land sites are key restoration areas in Abuksan that have faced with ecological problems. In this study, we identified the status of each site, determined key strategies being implemented, and designed based on the strategies implemented up to this point for solving problems associated with each sites through the use of causal loop diagrams. The results of the causal loop diagram analysis are as follows. The national archery center site was designed around strategies including planting green manure crops and introducing hugelkultur to reduce soil acidification and green network degradation. The hole site was designed as a constructed wetland based on the emergence of hygropreference vegetation, hydrated by rainwater collected at the bottom of hole, ecological and cultural benefits of such an environment. The arable land site restoration design was built around planting native vegetation on one part of the arable land site after soil quality improved and around restoration of grassland and a dry wetland on the other part of the site to reduce soil acidification, erosion, and green network degradation. This study is a significant attempt to apply principles of system dynamics to ecological restoration by providing the design strategies using comprehension of some problems in the ecosystem feedback loops, which has not been used before in general design processes for ecological restoration.
Recently, Community Rebuilding Projects (hereinafter CRPs) in Korea have been driven and motivated by community inhabitants by themselves, and highlighted as an alternative approach to overcome the limitation revealed normally in top-down projects of community vitalization by the Government. The CRPs encourage community-lead development because it happens to integrate multiple stakeholders and to help inhabitants to participate in the process of the CRPs by accumulating and enlarging social capital and network among inhabitants, and the social gain consequently raises the efficiency of public investment in revitalizing communities. In this study, the series of Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) is to be elaborated and the System-Thinking (ST) approach is to be presented to understand the dynamic characteristics residing in the above development process of rebuilding communities. The ST approach refers to the CLDs analyzing 19 remarkable Korean CRP cases, and leads to a conclusion including some of policy instruments to support the bottom-up CRPs in Korea. This study contributes a theoretical framework to understand the dynamic relation between social capital and community revitalization as well as empirical suggestions to respond to the issues of the CRPs in Korean local governments.
Using qualitative methods hinged on urban dynamics models, the paper addresses major issues concerned with new administrative capital construction. It tries to summarize the existing debates on new administrative capital construction and reinterpret diverse interacting factors in terms of reinforcing or balancing feedback structure. The paper suggests that understanding up on the dynamic mechanism imbedded in circular causal loop diagrams is the key to set up appropriate proposals and action plans for the new administrative capital, as they would reveal complicated linkages between the Capital Region and the rest, in addition to the urban dynamic of new administrative capital. In the same context, the paper can confirm similar features reflected in the relocation of capital functions at Canberra, Australia and Berlin, Germany. It has paid special attention to the fact that both Australian and German governments altogether stress the positive feedback loops as they have overcome unprecedented political confrontation among rival cities: Basically, they have encouraged gives-and-takes among major stake-holders. These research findings indicate that the future of new administrative capital construction depends on consensus buildings that can accommodate socio-economic and territorial changes between pros and cons. Although further researches and validations are needed, the system approach presented in this paper could assist Korean decision-makers in developing robust and responsive policy initiatives under uncertainties.

Ever increasing dependence of organization on information technology stimulates interactions between individuals and groups in the process of knowledge creation, which overall impies that a reciprocal mechanism lies within the structure of the growth of group intelligence. Individual's intelligence may affect the group intelligence, and vise versa. However, the level of group intelligence is not necessarily determined by the sum of individual's intelligence but the quality of the interactions among the individuals. This study thus aims to conceptually identify the dynamic structure of interactions among the factors influencing the group intelligence level, which is believed to be used as a tool to measure the difference of intelligence between groups. To achieve this goal several attempts were made. First, determinants of intelligence at indiviual level and group level and similarities and differences between individual's and group intelligence were identified from the previous research. Second, causal loop diagrams were developed, which show how individual's intelligence influences group intelligence and vise versa. Third, it was attempted to identify and interpret which feedback loops are most influential in either improving or hapering group intelligence as a whole. Since this study remains only at exploratory level, a more detailed and workable model for field applications has to be developed in the future.
This study is firstly aiming at diagnosing the present problems of evaluating the performance, especially in the field of disaster and safety management, of LGA (Local Government Authorities) in Korea. The study also deals with developing alternatives to solve a series of barrier factors revealed during the evaluation process using System Dynamics. This paper therefore presents literature review including the official documents published by the government and the performance evaluation studies of LGA. Moreover the authors analyze the current practice of the CELG (Combined Evaluation of Local Governments) as performance management, address and map a series of barrier factors in the CELG process to elaborate the CLDs (Causal-Loop Diagrams) and find solutions using system thinking with the CLDs. According to the analysis results, the core barrier factors to overcome is lack of proactive indicators/indices in the current practice of the CLEG. The authors therefore recommend to develop more proactive indicators that leads to avoid difficulties in measuring the LGA output, as well as to lessen the burden in competition for rankings and goal of the displaced.
The information service management models developed thus far have put their focuses mostly on technical dimensions of information systems (IS), finding their rationale from the goods-dominant logic (GDL) that IS as goods has value in itself. Information systems, however, is nothing more than a mechanism by which value is delivered to the users. According to the service-dominant logic (SDL), value is created and determined not at the time serve is made by the providers but at the time it is consumed by the users. The users therefore should be regarded as active value creators not as passive consumers of the value delivered by the providers. Based on the service-dominant logic, DISQM (Dynamic Information Service Quality Model) is developed. DISQM's backbone is designed in causal loop diagrams referring to and reinterpreting in systems thinking the 'Parasuraman, Zeithaml & Berry's GAP Model' and 'SERVQUAL' as an operational tool for the GAP Model, and the main IS success constructs are mapped onto the model exploiting the 'DeLone & MacLean's IS Success Model'. With VENSIM simulation software, this paper also shows how DISQM works in computer-simulation settings. After confirming DISQM's validity with the base simulation run, two scenarios are developed for the exemplary purpose and tested in terms of IS quality, service quality, and net benefits from the service for the public information service. Implications from the simulation runs are also discussed.
The interconnectedness of all things is continuously expanding. For example, bluetooth low energy (BLE) beacons are wireless radio transmitters that can send an identifier to nearby receivers and trigger a number of applications, from proximity marketing to indoor location-based service. iBeacon technology which is one of the newest technologies in the smart tourism field, is reckoned as being very useful for travelers in enhancing the experience with visiting places. However, there is consequently not much existing research yet about the connection between iBeacon technology and tourism destination. Considering that, this study analyzes the adoption of iBeacon in tourism destination, this study examine the interrelationships and feedback structures of key factors in iBeacon adoption. To serve the purpose, this study used system dynamics approach to develop a model of iBeacon adoption in tourism destination. The analysis results showed that the concept of 'Social Influences' is one of the significant predictors for individual's intention behavior to accept iBeacon, and word of mouth (WOM), subjective norm, privacy concern, and perceived usefulness are key factors influencing the iBeacon adoption.
The current paper presents a system dynamics model which can generate the land use anq transportation system performance simultaneously is proposed. The model system consists of 7 submodels (population, migration of population, household, job growth-employment-land availability, housing development, travel demand, and traffic congestion level), and each of them is designed based on the causality functions and feedback loop structure between a large number of physical, socio-economic, and policy variables. The important advantages of the system dynamics model are as follows. First, the model can address the complex interactions between land use and transportation system performance dynamically. Therefore, it can be an effective tool for evaluating the time-by-time effect of a policy over time horizons. Secondly, the system dynamics model is not relied on the assumption of equilibrium state of urban systems as in conventional models since it determines the state of model components directly through dynamic system simulation. Thirdly, the system dynamics model is very flexible in reflecting new features, such as a policy, a new phenomenon which has not existed in the past, a special event, or a useful concept from other methodology, since it consists of a lots of separated equations. In Chapter I, II, and III, overall approach and structure of the model system are discussed with causal-loop diagrams and major equations. In Chapter V _, the performance of the developed model is applied to the analysis of the impact of highway capacity expansion on land use for the area of Montgomery County, MD. The year-by-year impacts of highway capacity expansion on congestion level and land use are analyzed with some possible scenarios for the highway capacity expansion. This is a first comprehensive attempt to use dynamic system simulation modeling in simultaneous treatment of land use and transportation system interactions. The model structure is not very elaborate mainly due to the problem of the availability of behavioral data, but the model performance results indicate that the proposed approach can be a promising one in dealing comprehensively with complicated urban land use/transportation system.
