The design of a current collection system of high speed train requires the fundamental understandings fer the dynamic characteristics of a catenary system and pantograph. The stiffness of the catenary system of high speed train has the varying characteristics for the change of the contact point with a pantograph, since the supporting pole and hanger make the different boundary conditions for the updown stiffness of a trolley wire. The variation of stiffness results in Mathiue equation, which characterizes the stability of the system. However, the two terms variation of the stiffness due to span length and hanger distance cannot be solved analytically. In this paper, the stiffness variations are calculated, and the physical reasoning of linear model and one term Mathieu equation are reviewed. And the numerical analysis for the two term variation of the stiffness is done for the several design parameters of the pantograph.

A catenary system should be designed to have an uniform elasticity over a span in order to maintain the lowest possible loss of contact between a pantograph and a contact wire. A elasticity uniformity of a catenary can be regarded as a important design factor used for predicting the current collection performance for a catenary. There are a couple of formulas to calculate the degree of elasticity uniformity of a catenary according to the literature survey. The effectiveness of these formulas is reviewed by performing catenary elasticity and loss of contact analysis for various different configurations of catenary systems using a beam element based FEM program. The results reveals that these formulas are not suitable to predict the current collection performance for a catenary. Therefore, a new formula based on the standard deviation of the elasticity over a span is proposed in this study. The analysis results show that the new formula for an elasticity uniformity of a catenary is very effective in predicting the current collection performance for a catenary.
In this study, the dynamic response of a catenary system that supplies electrical power to high-speed trains is investigated. One of the important problems which is accompanied by increasing the speed of a high-speed rail, is the performance of stable current collection. Another problem which has been encountered, is maintaining continuous contact force between the catenary and the pantograph without loss of panhead. The dynamic analyses of the catenary based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) are performed to develop a pantograph suitable for high speed operation. The static deflection of the catenary, the stiffness variation in contact lines, the dynamic response of the catenary undergoing the force of a constantly moving load and the contact force were calculated. It was confirmed that a catenary model is necessary to study the dynamic characteristics of the pantograph system.

In this study, a simulation model to estimate the current-collection performance of a high-speed train was developed by using a commercial finite element analysis software, SAMCEF. A three-dimensional springDdamperDmass model of a pantograph was created, and its reliability was validated by comparing the receptance of the model to that of the actual pantograph. The wave propagation speed of the catenary model was compared with the analytical wave propagation speed of the catenary system presented in the UIC 799 OR standard. The length of the droppers was controlled, and the pre-sag of the contact wire due to gravity was considered. The catenary and the pantograph were connected by using a contact element, and the contact force variation when the pantograph was moved at velocities of 300 km/h and 370 km/h was obtained. The average, standard deviation, maximum, and minimum values of the contact force were analyzed, and the effectiveness of the developed simulation model was examined.

Electric power collection is one of the most important factors for the high-speed trains' operation. For the stable current collection, the contact wire of a catenary and the panhead of a pantograph should maintain a constant contact each other. In this paper, the catenary was modeled as a spring with time-varying stiffness from the point of a pantograph moving along the catenary, and the pantograph was modeled as a 3-D.O.F. mass-spring-damper system. Using the adaptive control method, the desired control performance could be obtained with the modeling errors and the time varying parameters. Also the state estimator was used considering the difficulty of applying the sensors obtaining feedback signals. Simulations were accomplished in various ...

This paper presents design of the linear propulsion system of a high-speed (200km/h) dynamic tester for catenary-current collection. Among various propulsion systems, a permanent magnet linear synchronous motor is chosen for need of high acceleration force. The design is performed by the equivalent magnetic circuit method and verified by the finite element method. In addition, analysis of the main effects of various design variables for performance of the propulsion system has been done by using simulation-based DOE method.
The railway catenary is softer in the middle of a span than at the end. This stiffness variation induce the vertical motion of a moving pantograph, which results in the large variation of contact forces. To reduce the vertical motion of a pantograph, we can introduce a pre-sag of the contact wire. The pre-sag changes merely equilibrium position of the contact wire. Because the pantograph must follow the sag added to the motion of the contact wire, the sag gives downward forces to the pantograph. If the pre-sag is proper, the variation of the vertical motion of the pantograph is reduced. However, excessive sag worses the current collection performance because the pantograph receives too large downward forces by the contact wire. The objective of the paper is to establish the theoretical basis to understand how the pre-sag affect the contact force variation and to propose the proper sag for the railway catenary for the train speed up to 200 km/h.

In this paper, as a conceptual design of the catenary-current collection run tester which is planning to be constructed by KRRI, the feasibility study is described. In this study, reviews to determine the propulsion linear motor rating based on the target distance-speed curve through various simulation of LSM propulsion system were conducted. Moreover, the reviews of simulation results and desirable linear motor specifications are discussed in this paper.
This paper presents the optimal design of a high-speed (200[km/h]) Linear Synchronous Motor which will be used as a propulsion system of a dynamic tester for catenary-current collection used in railways. Motor performance, especially detent force minimization on various design schemes has been investigated in detail by using FEM (Finite Element Method). Simulation-based DOE (Design of Experiments) method is also applied in order to reduce the large number of analysis according to each design variable and consider the effect among variables. The optimal design in all aspects is proposed by an optimization algorithm using a regression equation derived from the simulation-based DOE and the performance is verified by FEM.

The contact force between the pantograph and the catenary is a key factor determining the current collection quality, as they can ensure stable electrical power to the train. In this study, we analyzed the dynamic contact force for HEMU-430X depending on the train speed. It was confirmed through the results that the standard deviation of the contact force increases with an increase in the train speed. It was also verified that the span of the catenary system is a very important factor with regard to the contact force when analyzed with frequency analysis. To secure stable power in speed that exceeds 400km/h, the statistical variation of the contact force should be minimized. To realize this, the catenary tension was increased and the mass of the pan-head was decreased. The ensuing effects were then quantitatively analyzed in terms of the contact force. In addition, the differences in the contact force between a tunnel and an open field were analyzed based on a frequency analysis.
