  • In a densely developed metropolitan area, the subway system is often constructed to address the mobility problems. Subway system was first introduced in Seoul in late 1970s, then Korean metropolitan cities began to adopt the system later. Subway systems not only resolve the mobility problems, but also interact with regional socioeconomic landscape. This study aims to find the association between the subway network and land rent within the subway catchment areas in Gwangju metropolitan city in a spaciotemporal framework. The analysis results indicated that proximity to the subway station and the size of nearest road were positively associated with the land rent. Also from a cluster analysis, it was found that the old and new Central Business Districts as well as stations at peripheral areas had distinctive land rent change characteristics. This empirical analysis indirectly proves the strong association between land rent and urban planning and also the positive relationship between land rent and transportation networks.

  • The major 24 tributaries in Nam-River mid-watershed were monitored for discharge and water quality in order to understand the characteristics of the watershed and to select the tributary catchment for improving water quality. According to the analytical results of discharge and water quality monitoring data of 24 tributaries, the mean value of discharge below $0.1m^3/s$ was 62.5% among the monitored tributaries and it mostly exceeded the water quality standards of Nam-river mid-watershed ($BOD_5$ = 3 mg/L, T-P = 0.1 mg/L over). According to the stream grouping method and the water quality delivery load density ($kg/day/km^2$) based on the results of tributary discharge and water quality monitoring, the tributary watersheds for improving the water quality were selected. In the Nam-River mid-watershed, tributaries in the GaJwaCheon, HaChonCheon catchment (Group D, $BOD_5$ = 3 mg/L over) and in the UirYeongCheon, SeokGyoCheon catchment (Group A, T-P = 0.1 mg/L over), which have a small flow (and/or large flow) and a high concentrations of water pollutants. The various water quality improving scheme for tributaries, in accordance with the reduction of potential point source pollution by living sewage and livestock wastewater, should be established and implemented.

  • The objectives of this study are to introduce flash flood forecasting system in Korea and to develop a system for computing threshold runoff on very fine catchment scale. The developed GUI system composed of 9 steps starting from input data preparation to Input file creation for flash flood forecasting compute basin subdivision, hydrologic subbasin characteristics, bankfull flows, unit peak flows and threshold runoffs on about 5 $\textrm{km}^2$ scale. When the developed system was applied on Pyungchang IHP basin, the computed 1-hour threshold runoffs ranged 18.72~81.96mm with average value of 46.39mm. Judging from the comparison of the computed threshold runoffs between this study area and three other basins in United States, the computed results in this study were reasonable. It can be concluded that the developed system on ArcView/Avenue are useful for computing threshold runoff on small catchment and can be used as a component of flash flood forecasting system.

  • A new methodology for selecting spatially variable model control parameter values through consideration of inference models within a Hydroinformatic system has been developed to overcome problems associated with determination of spatially variable control parameter values for both ungauged and gauged catchment. The adopted Hydroinformatic tools for determination of control parameter values were a GIS(Arc/Info) to handle spatial and non-spatial attribute information, the SWMM(stormwater management model) to simulate catchment response to hydrologic events, and lastly, L_BFGS_B(a limited memory quasi-Newton algorithm) to assist in the calibration process. As a result, high accuracy of control parameter estimation was obtained by considering the spatial variations of the control parameters based on landuse characteristics. Also, considerable time and effort necessary for estimating a large number of control parameters were reduced from the new calibration approach.

  • The major 81 tributaries in Chungcheongnam-do were monitored for flowrate and water quality in order to understand the characteristics of the watershed and to select the tributary catchment for improving water quality. The value of flowrate in the tributaries at Nonsancheon catchment at the Geum-River watershed and Gokgyocheon, Muhancheon, Sapgyocheon at the Sapgyo-Reservoir watershed, which is located in the southern and northern area in Chungcheongnam-do, was relatively greater than the other watersheds. The concentration of water pollutants regardless of water quality parameters in Nonsancheon catchment at the Geum-River watershed, Gokgyocheon catchment at the Sapgyo-Reservoir watershed and the Anseongcheon watershed, which have a dense source of pollution, were higher than the other watersheds. However, 64 percent of the tributaries at the Geum-River watershed, 45 percent of tributaries at the Sapgyo-Reservoir watershed, 26 percent of tributaries at the Geum-River watershed all satisfied the Class II regulations in the Framework Act on Environment Policy, but all of the tributaries located in the Anseongcheon watershed exceeded the Class II regulations. Therefore, the policy for improving the water quality of the tributary in Chungcheongnam-do should be established in the following order: Anseongcheon, Seohae, Sapgyo-Reservoir watersheds. Consequently, the tributary catchment for improving water quality, which has a large flowrate and a high concentration of water pollutants, was selected at Ganggyeongcheon, Geumcheon, Nonsancheon, Seokseongcheon, Seungcheoncheon, Jeongancheon, Jeungsancheon (so far Geum-River watershed), Gokgyocheon, Namwoncheon, Maegokcheon, Muhancheon, Sapgyocheon Oncheoncheon, Cheonancheon (so far Sapgyo-Reservoir watershed), Gwangcheoncheon, Dangjincheon, Daecheoncheon, Dodangcheon, Waryongcheon, Cheongjicheon, Pangyocheon, Heungincheon (so far Seohae watershed), Dunpocheon, Seonghwancheon, Ipjangcheon (so far Anseongcheon watershed). The plans as installation of environmental facilities to reduce the source of pollution for improving the water quality of these tributary catchments should be urgently established and implemented.

  • Water shortage as well as water control problems including urban flood and drought have led to developing technologies for rainwater utilization in order to provide a sustainable water supply. However, relatively few works have been done to improve the water quality during rainwater utilization. Therefore, in this study, the characteristics of rainwater were examined in terms of pollutant concentrations and outflow rate. A experimental rain and roof model($1m{\times}1m$) were produced to evaluate wash-off properties of pollutants. And rainfall intensity were standardized in 10 mm/hr, a experimental model roof catchment surface were coated in $TiO_2$ photocatalyst. Samples of runoff rainwater collected from a experimental model were analyzed for physicochemical parameters such as Turbidity, Suspended Solid, EC. The results show that the first flush of rainwater contains substantial amount of contaminants that potentially pollute the whole rainwater. Surface treatment of roof catchment area using $TiO_2$ photocatalyst allowed a better runoff property of rainwater because of its improved hydrophilicity.

  • According to the technical guideline of water pollutant load management, the rainfall captured ratio which can be estimated by the empirical formula is an important element to estimate reduction loads of non-point pollutants water quality control basin. In this study, the rainfall captured ratio is altered to stormwater captured ratio considering its meaning in the technical guideline of water pollutant load management, and the new empircal formula of stormwater captured ratio is suggested. In order to do this, we calculate stormwater captured ratio by using the hourly rainfall data of seven urban weather stations (Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Gangreung, Seoul, Gwangju, and Jeju) for 43 years. The regression coefficients of the existed empirical formula cannot reflect the catchment properties at all, because they are fixed values regardless of regions. However the empirical formula of stormwater captured ratio has flexible regression coefficients by runoff coefficient(C), so it is allowed to consider the characteristics of runoff in catchment. It is expected that reduction loads of storage based water quality control basin can be more reasonably estimated than before.

  • Recently, climate change causes climatic anomaly such as global warming, the typhoon and severe rain storm etc. and it brings damage frequently. Climate change and global warming are prevalent all over the world in this century and many researchers including hydrologists have studied on the climate change. In this study, Seonakdong river watershed in the Nakdong river basin was selected as a study area. Real-time monitoring system was used to draw the rating curves, which has 0.78 to 0.96 of $R^2$. To predict runoff change in Seonakdong river watershed caused by climate change, the change in hydrologic runoff were predicted using the watershed model, SWAT. As a result, the runoff from the Seonakdong river watershed was increased by up to 45 % in summer. Because of the non-point sources from the farmland and the urban area, the water quality will be affected by the climate change. In this study, the operating plan of the water gates in Seonakdong river will be suggested by considering the characteristics of the watershed runoff due to the climate change. The optimal watergate opening plan will solve the water pollution problems in the reservoir-like river.

  • This Study is to develop the suitable hydrologic models for determination of the size and location of detention storage facilities to restrain stormwater runoff in urban areas. Hypothetical areas of two levels are considered to seize the hydrologic response characteristics. A one-square-kilometer ares is selected for the catchment level, and a 10-square-kilometer area consisting of 10 catchments is adapted at the watershed level as representative of urban drainage area. In this analysis, different rainfall freqyencies, land uses, drainage patte군, basin shates and detention storage policies are considered. Folw reduction effect of detention storage facilities is deduced from storage ratio and detention basin factor. A substantial saving in detention storage volumes is achieved 노두 the detention storage is planned at the watershed level rather than the catchment level. For the application of real watersheds, two watersheds in Seoul metropolitan area-Jamshil 2 and Seongnae 1-are selected on the basis of hydrologic response charactaristics. Through the regression analysis between dimensionless deterntion storage volume, dimensionless upstream area ratio and reduction rate of storage ratio, the regression equations to determine the size and location of detention storage faclities are presented.
