Highly ordered pure-silica MCM-41 materials possessing well-defined morphology have been successfully prepared with surfactant used as a template. The fabrication of mesoporous silica has received considerable attention due to the need to develop more efficient materials' for catalysis, separations, and chemical sensing. The surface modified MCM-41 was used as anadsorbent for biomolecules. Silica-supported organic groups and DNA adsorption on surface modified MCM-41 were investigated by FT-IR and UV-Vis spectrometer, respectively. The use of MCM-41 as the modification of electrode surfaces were investigated electrochemical properties of metal mediators with biomolecules. The modified ITO electrodes increased peak currents for a redox process of $[Ru(bpy)_3]^{2+}$ relative to the bare electrode. The electrochemical detection of DNA by cyclic voltammetry when the current is saturated in the presence of the mediator appeared more sensitive due to a higher catalytic current on the MCM-41 supported electrodes modified by carboxylic acid functional groups. The carboxyl or amine groups on the surface of MCM-41 interact and react with the $-NH_2$ groups of guanine and backbone, respectively. Highly ordered mesoporous materials with organic groups could find applications as DNA sensors.
Imaging of surfaces and structures by near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) has matured and is routinely used for studies ranging from biology to materials science. Of interest in this review paper is a versatility of modified or multi-functional NSOM (mf-NSOM) to enable high resolution imaging in several modes: (1) Concurrent fluorescence and Topographical Imaging (gases) (2) Microspectroscopy (gases) (3) Concurrent Scanning Electrochemical and Topographical Imaging (SECM) (liquids) (4) Concurrent Photoelectrochemical and Topographical Imaging (PEM) (liquids) The present study will summarize some of the recent advances in mf-NSOM work confirmed and supported by the results from several other imaging techniques of optical, fluorescence, electron and electrochemical microscopy. The studies are directed at providing local information on pitting precursor sites and vulnerable areas on metal and semiconductor surfaces, and at reactive sites on heterogeneous, catalytic substrates, especially on Al 2024 alloy and polycrystalline Ti. In addition, we will introduce some results related to the laser-induced nanometal (Ag) synthesis using mf-NSOM.
The X-ray structure of the cydodextrin-glucanotransferase of Bacillus macerans was solved by molecular replacement at 2.0 ${\AA}$ resolution. The refined structure has a crystallographic R-factor of 16.6%, (R$\sub$free/ = 20.5%). A new metal binding site occupied by two Ca$\^$2+/-ions was found at an accession channel of the active site. There is a large accumulation of negative charges that bind these Ca$\^$2+/-ions, thereby connecting segment ${\beta}$13-${\alpha}$G (residue 254-276) to the main body of domain A (at ${\alpha}$H, residue 283-297). The segment 313-${\alpha}$G contains the catalytic residue Glu258 between subsite 1 and -1 and Tyr260 (subsite 2) which is located at the entrance of the active site. The Ca$\^$2+/-site 3a,b may have a major role for the activity and specificity of this CGTase, although it is not even conserved for the a-subclass of CGTases.
The stereoselective synthesis of chiral terminal epoxide is of immense interest due to their utility as versatile starting materials as well as chiral intermediates. In this study, new chiral Co(salen) complexes bearing cobalt(II) chloride, iron(III) chloride and zinc(II) nitrate have been synthesized and characterized. The mass and EXAFS spectra provided the direct evidence of formation of complex. Their catalytic activity and selectivity have been demonstrated for the asymmetric ring opening of terminal epoxides such as styrene oxide and phenylglycidylether by hydrolytic kinetic resolution technology and for the synthesis of glycidyl buthylate. The easily prepared complexes exhibited very high enantioselectivity for the asymmetric ring opening of epoxides with $H_2O$ nucleophile, providing enantiomerically enriched terminal epoxides (>99% ee). The newly synthesized chiral salen showed remakablely enhanced reactivity with substantially low loadings. The system described in this work is very efficient for the sinthesis of chiral epoxide and 1,2-diol intermediates.

Pitch based activated carbon fiber(ACF) was prepared from reformed naphtha cracking bottom oil(NCB oil) by melt spinning. The fibers obtained were stabilized, carbonized, and then steam activated. The ACF was sensitized with Pd-Sn catalytic nuclei via a single-step activation approach. This sensitized ACF was used as precursors for obtaining copper plated ACFs via electroless plating. ACFs uniformly decorated with metal particles were obtained with reduced copper plating in the reaction solution. Effects of the amount of copper on characteristics of ACF/Cu catalysts were investigated through BET surface area, X-ray diffraction, scanning emission microscopy, and ICP. The amount of copper increased with plating time, but the surface area as well as the pore volume decreased. NO conversion increased with reaction temperature. NO conversion decreased with increasing the amount of copper, which is seemed to be due to the reduction of surface area as well as the dispersion of copper.

The direct synthesis of $C_2$ chemical directly from methane was studied by employing catalysts with ordered mesopores in a dielectric barrier discharge plasma reactor. The reaction was carried out using MgO/OMA (ordered mesoporous alumina), $MgO/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and $MgO/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ as catalysts. When MgO/OMA was applied, it showed excellent performance in the plasma reactor using pulse-type power supply and the selectivity of $C_2$ chemicals was measured as 67%. The effects of metal oxide type, textural property of support, alumina phase and power supply type on catalytic performance were investigated especially in terms of $C_2$ chemical formation. BET (Brunauer, Emmett, Teller), X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope and thermogravimetric analysis were used to investigate the characterization of the catalyst before and after the reaction.

Dimensionally stable anode(DSA) can be used for the electrowinning of non-ferrous metal like as a Zn, and electrolysis of sea water. $MnO_2$ electrode satisfies the requirements of DSA, and has a good cycle life and a low overpotential for oxygen evolution. $MnO_2$ electrodes coated with DMF and PVDF based on Pb alloy produced at several compositions and dry temperatures. The viscosity of solvent used as a binder of $MnO_2$ powder increased with the increasing PVDF contents. When the ratio of PVDF to BMF with the 5 times dipping at the solution mixed with PVDF and DMF was 1/9, the coating thickness was $150{\mu}m$. When the ratio of PVDF to $MnO_2$ was lower than 1/6, the electrode didn't show any reaction irrespective of the concentrations of DMF. However, When the ratio of PVDF to $MnO_2$ was higher than 1/6, the electrode showed a constant current reactions and homogeneous cyclic voltammetry even though at a high cycle. The reason for the high current and homogeneous cyclic voltammetry is the good catalytic reactions of $MnO_2$ powder in electrode. The reactions of Pb electrode coated with $MnO_2$ and PVDF based on the pure Pb electrode.
Cerium oxide (ceria, CeO2) is one of the most wide-spread oxide supporting materials for the precious metal nanoparticle class of heterogeneous catalysts. Because ceria can store and release oxygen ions, it is an essential catalytic component for various oxidation reactions such as CO oxidation (2CO + O2 2CO2). Moreover, reduced ceria is known to be reactive for water activation, which is a critical step for activation of water-gas shift reaction (CO + H2O → H2 + CO2). Here, we apply van der Waals-corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with U correction to study the mechanism of water chemisorption on CeO2(111) surfaces. A stoichiometric CeO2(111) and a defected CeO2(111) surface showed different water adsorption chemistry, suggesting that defected CeO2 surfaces with oxygen vacancies are responsible for water binding and activation. An appropriate level of water-ceria chemisorption energy is deduced by vdW-corrected non-local correlation coupled with the optB86b exchange functional, whereas the conventional PBE functional describes weaker water-ceria interactions, which are insufficient to stabilize (chemisorb) water on the ceria surfaces.

Since the first obserbvation of carbon nanotubes, extensive researches have been done for the synthesis using arc discharge, laser vaporization, and plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Carbon nanotubes have unique physical and chemical properties and can allow nanoscale devices. Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes with high quality on a large area is particularly important to enable both fundamental studies and applications, such as flat panel displays and vacuum microelectronics. we have grown vertically aligned carbon nanotubes on a large area of Si substrates by thermal chemical vapor deposition using C2H2 gas at 750-950$^{\circ}C$. we deposited catalytic metal on Si susbstrate using thermal evaporation. The nanotubes reveal highly purified surface. The carbon nanotubes have multi-wall structure with a hollow inside and it reveals bamboo structure agreed with base growth model. Figure 1 shows SEM micrograph showing vertically aligned carbon nanotubes whih were grown at 950$^{\circ}C$ on a large area (20mm${\times}$30mm) of Si substrates. Figure 2 shows TEM analysis was performed on the carbon nanotubes grown at 950$^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. The carbon nanotubes are multi-wall structure with bamboo shape and the lack of fringes inside the nanotube indicates that the core of the structure is hollow. In our experiment, carbon nanotubes grown by the thermal CVD indicate base growth model.
Metal nanoparticles have been intensively studied within the past decade. Nano-sized materials have been an important subject in basic and applied sciences. Zinc oxide nanoparticles have received considerable attention due to their unique antibacterial, antifungal, and UV filtering properties, high catalytic and photochemical activity. In this study, microbiological aspects of scale formation in PVC pipelines bacteria and fungi were isolated. In the emerging issue of increased multi-resistant properties in water borne pathogens, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticle are being used increasingly as antimicrobial agents. Thus, the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and minimum fungal concentration of ZnO nanoparticles towards pathogens microbe were examined in this study. The results obtained suggested that ZnO nanoparticles exhibit a good anti fungal activity than bactericidal effect towards all pathogens tested in in-vitro disc diffusion method (170 ppm, 100 ppm and 30 ppm). ZnO nanoparticles can be a potential antimicrobial agent due to its low cost of production and high effectiveness in antimicrobial properties, which may find wide applications in various industries to address safety issues. Stable ZnO nanoparticles were prepared and their shape and size distribution characterized by Dynamic light scattering (35.7 nm) and transmission electron microscopic TEM study for morphology identification (20 nm), UV-visible spectroscopy (230 nm), X-ray diffraction (FWHM of more intense peak corresponding to 101 planes located at $36.33^{\circ}$ using Scherrer's formula), FT-IR (Amines, Alcohols, Carbonyl and Nitrate ions), Zeta potential (-28.8). The antimicrobial activity of ZnO nanoparticles was investigated against Bacteria and Fungi present in drinking water PVC pipelines biofilm. In these tests, Muller Hinton agar plates were used and ZnO nanoparticles of various concentrations were supplemented in solid medium.
