The characteristics of the catalytically supported thermal combustion with Pd-based catalyst using the bench scale high pressure combustor has been investigated up to 7 atm. The emission of $NO_{\chi}$ depends on the preheating temperature and the excess air ratio. Most $NO_{\chi}$ emission seems to come from the pre-burner for the preheating of the inlet gas. Decreasing excess air ratio in the inlet gas below 1.5 results in the stable catalytically supported thermal combustion in the post combustion region while the $NO_{\chi}$ emission increased up to 15 ppm. Further, the increase of the pressure shows the dramatic increase of the emission CO and THC. However, the $NO_{\chi}$ emission decreased slightly due to the lower combustion temperature at the high pressure.
Molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) power plant is expected to be one of the most promising future power generation system for the electric utilities because of its high efficiency, environmental suitability and capability of using coal as fuel. To get such attractive performance, it is necessary to consider optimizing operation and gas recycling system. This paper describes the simulation results of 7 kW MCFC stack in KEPRI and the effects of the three possible gas recycling operations, i.e. cathode gas recycling, anode gas recycling, anode gas recycling with catalytic burner.
The selective non-catalytic reduction(SNCR) performance is sensitive to the process parameters such as flow velocity, reaction temperature and mixing of reagent(ammonia or urea) with the flue gases. Therefore, the knowledge of the velocity field, temperature field and species concentration distribution is crucial for the design and operation of an effective SNCR injection system. In this work, a full-scale two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics(CFD)-based reacting model involving a droplet model is built and validated with the data obtained from a pilot-scale urea-based SNCR reactor installed with a 150 kW LPG burner. The kinetic mechanism with seven reactions for nitrogen oxides($NO_x$) reduction by urea-water solution is used to predict $NO_x$ reduction and ammonia slip. Using the turbulent reacting flow CFD model involving the discrete droplet phase, the CFD simulation results show maximum 20% difference from the experimental data for NO reduction. For $NH_3$ slip, the simulation results have a similar tendency with the experimental data with regard to the temperature and the normalized stoichiometric ratio(NSR).
This paper focuses on a systematic configuration of steam reforming fuel processor, particularly designed for small and medium sized hydrogen production application. In a typical integration of the fuel processor, there exist significant temperature gradients over the entire system which has negative effect on both catalyst life-time and system performance. Also, the volumetric inefficiency should be avoided to obtain the possible compactness for the commercial purpose. In the present work, the computational analysis will be performed to gain the fundamental insight on the transport phenomena and chemical reactions in the reformer consisting of preheating, steam reforming (SR), and water gas shift (WGS) reaction beds in the flow direction. Also, the fuel processing system includes a top-fired burner providing necessary thermal energy for endothermic catalytic reactor. A fully two-dimensional numerical modeling for a integrated fuel processing system is introduced for in-depth analysis of the heat and mass transport phenomena based on surface kinetics and catalytic process. In the model, water gas shift reaction and decomposition reaction were assumed to be at equilibrium. A kinetic model was developed and then computational results were compared with the experimental data available in the literature. Finally, the case study was done by considering the key parameters, i.e. steam to carbon (S/C) ratio and temperature. The computer-aided models developed in this study can be greatly utilized for the design of advanced fast-paced compact fuel processors research.

Global climate changes caused by $CO_2$ emissions are currently debated around the world; green sources of energy are being sought as alternatives to replace fossil fuels. The sustainable use of biogas for energy production does not contribute to $CO_2$ emission and has therefore a high potential to reduce them. Catalytic steam reforming of a model biogas ($CH_4:CO_2$ = 60%:40%) is investigated to produce $H_2$-rich synthesis gas. The biogas utilized 3D-IR matrix burner in which the surface combustion is applied. The ruthenium catalyst was used inside a reformer. Parametric screening studies were achieved as Steam/Carbon ratio, biogas component ratio, Space velocity and Reformer temperature. When the condition of Steam/Carbon ratio, $CH_4/CO_2$ ratio, Space velocity and Refomer temperature were 3.25, 60% : 40%, $14.7L/g{\cdot}hr$ and $550^{\circ}C$ respectively, the hydrogen concentration and methane conversion rate were showed maximum values. Under the condition mentioned above, $H_2$ yield, $H_2$/CO ratio, CO selectivity and energy efficiency were 0.65, 2.14, 0.59, 51.29%.

It is well known that the majority of the emissions measured from vehicle exhaust in the US Federal Test Procedure(FTP-75) are emitted during the first 60 seconds. This paper describes an experimental study on SI engine emissions reduction after cold start with interval secondary air injection and coolant control. Secondary air injection after cold start to reduce exhaust emissions causes an exothermic reaction at the exhaust port and gives sufficient air to the catalyst. For that reason engine-out emissions oxidized in the exhaust port and the rapid heating of a catalytic converter after cold start with CSAI and ISAI are estimated. The influence of the coolant temperature on SI engine emissions has been estimated. In the present studycoolant control of the cylinder head tempeature is used to investigate the effect of coolant temperature on SI engine emissions. The results show that engine-out hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions are considerably reduced with interval secondary air injection and coolant control.
The molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) is endowed with the high potential especially in future electric power generation industry by its own outstanding characteristics. KEPCO (KEPRI) started a 100 kW MCFC system development program in 1993 and has been executed 100kW system develpilot plant successfully completed first phaseopment by 2005 on the basis of successful results of 25kW system development. In this program, the components and mechanical structure for 100 kW stack and system construction were completed on last year and now system pre - commissioning was being executed. A 100 kW MCFC power plant was constructed at the site of Boryeong Thermal Power Plant. A 100 kW MCFC system has characterized as a high pressure operation mode, CO2 recycle, and externally reforming power generation system. The 100 kW MCFC system consisted with stacks which was made by two 50 kW sub-stacks, 90 cells with 6,000 cm2 active area and BOP including a reformer, a recycle blower, a catalytic burner, an inverter, and etc. The system has been operated from 13th of September on this year and produced 50 kW AC under atmospheric pressure condition and expected to operate by the end of this year.

This work is mainly focused at developing the hydrogen production unit with the capacity of 20 $Nm^3/h$ of high purity hydrogen. At present steam reforming of natural gas is the preferable method to produce hydrogen at the point of production cost. The developed hydrogen production unit composed of natural gas reformer and pressure swing adsorption system. To improve the thermal efficiency of steam reforming reactor, the internal heat recuperating structure was adopted. The heat contained in reformed gas which comes out of the catalytic beds recovered by reaction feed stream. These features of design reduce the fuel consumption into burner and the heat duty of external heat exchangers, such as feed pre-heater and steam generator. The production rate of natural gas reformer was 41.7 $Nm^3/h$ as a dryreformate basis. The composition of PSA feed gas was $H_2$ 78.26%, $CO_2$ 18.49%, CO 1.43% and $CH_4$ 1.85%. The integrated production unit can produce 21.1 $Nm^3/h$ of high-purity hydrogen (99.997%). The hydrogen production efficiency of the developed unit was more than 58% as an LHV basis.
In order to enhance combustion efficiency, oxygen-enriched combustion is used by increasing the oxygen ratio in the oxidizer. However, since the flame temperature increases, NOx formation in the furnace seriously increases for low oxygen enrichment ratio. In this case, reburning is a useful technology for reducing nitric oxide. In this research, experimental studies have been conducted to evaluate the hybrid effects of reburning/selective non-catalytic reaction (SNCR) and reburning/air staging on NOx formation and also to examine heat transfer characteristics in various oxygen-enriched LPG flames. Experiments were performed in flames stabilized by a co-flow swirl burner, which were mounted at the bottom of the furnace. Tests were conducted using LPG gas as main fuel and also as reburn fuel. The paper reported data on flue gas emissions, temperature distribution in furnace and various heat fluxes at the wall for a wide range of experimental conditions. Overall temperature in the furnace, heat fluxes to the wall and NOx generation were observed to increase by low level oxygen-enriched combustion, but due to its hybrid effects of reburning, SNCR and Air staging, NOx concentration in the exhaust have decreased considerably.
Accelerated aging of engine exhaust system components such as catalytic converters are traditionally performed using an engine/dynamometer test stand. $SwRI^{(R)}'s\;FOCAS^{(R)}$ system reduces or eliminates many of the engine based aging limitations. This paper will describe several studies. These include: 1) replication of engine based catalyst aging cycles with added precision and dependability; 2) catalyst aging with and without lubricating oil effects; 3) effects of lubricant phosphorus on catalyst performance; and 4) the potential to thermally age components beyond the capabilities of engine based systems. The first study includes the development of the SwRI FOCAS system to run programmed aging conditions with or without lubricating oil. A description of the subsystems is given. The second two studies used the SwRI FOCAS system to age catalysts. One study compared thermal-only aging using of the SwRI FOCAS system with equivalent aging on a traditional engine/dynamometer test stand. The other study examined the effect on catalyst performance of two lubricating oils containing different levels of phosphorus, and compared the results to field data generated using the same oils in a fleet of vehicles.
