Effect of Prickly Castor-Oil Tree (Kalopanax pictus) Extract on Naengmyeon Broth during Storage (해동피 추출물이 냉면육수의 저장성에 미치는 영향)

  • Quality improvements of Naengmyeon broth were explored by adding prickly castor-oil tree extract to the broth. Samples of Naengmyeon broth containing various levels (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4%) of prickly castor-oil tree extract were stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for five days. During storage, the pH decreased with an increase of total acidity; however, this decrease in pH was slowed with by increasing levels of prickly castor-oil tree extract. Turbidity levels, along with total solid contents in the liquid portion of the Naengmyeon broth, increased in all treatments as storage proceeded, although the extent was somewhat suppressed by the prickly castor-oil tree extract. As a result of storage, colorimetric lightness values decreased and redness and yellowness increased. Total viable cells and coliform bacteria were lower in the Naengmyeon broth with added prickly castor-oil tree extract compared to the control. Also, with increasing prickly castor-oil tree extract concentration, fewer total viable cells and coliform bacteria were observed. The VBN contents of the broth samples containing prickly castor-oil tree extract was higher than of control, and the more prickly castor-oil tree extract were higher than the VBN content of the control; moreover, as prickly castor-oil tree extract content increased, less VBN was detected. In sensory evaluations, the 0.3% treatment was the most favored in terms of color, smell, sour taste, carbonated taste, and the overall acceptability. In conclusion, the addition of prickly castor-oil tree extract, having antimicrobial activity and natural antiseptic qualities, improved the storage duration of Naengmyeon broth. Also, the sensory characteristics of the 03% treatment were especially preferred.

Effect of Soil Salinity and Flooding on Plant Growth and Yield of Rape-Castor Bean Cropping System in the Newly Reclaimed Tidal Land of Western Seaside of Korea (서해안 신간척지에서 유채-피마자 작부체계시 토양염농도 및 침수가 생육 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • Double cropping system of oilseed crops introduced rape and castor bean was studied in the newly reclaimed tidal land of Korea. Surface soil EC to reach at 50% of growth reduction to the tallest height of crops was estimated $4dS\;m^{-1}$ for castor bean and $6dS\;m^{-1}$ for rape by logarithmic function. The castor bean cultivated during rainy summer much more suffered serious growth and yield reduction by flooding damage in the Hwaong and Yeonsangang reclaimed lands having low soil conductivity and finer textured soil than in the Iweon reclaimed land having higher soil conductivity and coarse sandy textured soil. Rape cultivated during dry winter-spring much more suffered serious growth and yield reduction by high soil salinity come from re-salting process. 50% yield reduction was estimated at $2.0\;2.5dS\;m^{-1}$ of surface soil EC by logarithmic function. Consequentially, it was concluded that oilseed production for energy by double cropping system of rape and castor bean might be possible under good controling soil salinity below $4dS\;m^{-1}$ for castor and $3dS\;m^{-1}$ for rape in the newly reclaimed land of Korea.

  • We investigated the effects of ethanol on solubilization of L-menthol solution. L-menthol solution was prepared by addition of PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil and PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil as nonionic surfactant. Ethanol was added in the solution to investigate effects of ethanol concentration on solubilization. We measured physical properties such as particle size and surface tension. The particle size and the surface tension became smaller with the increase of ethanol concentration.

The Toughness of Castor Oil Modified Epoxy Resins by Various Cure Temperatures (경화온도에 따른 Castor Oil/epoxy의 강인성)

  • The toughness and morphology of epoxy resin based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A(DGEBA) cured with of tris (dimethylaminomethy]) phenol(DMP-30) and castor oil (CO) as a toughening modifier have been studied. Mixtures of CO and an epoxy resin showed a higher miscibility than the classical CTBN modified epoxy resin. The glass transition temperature($T_g$) was decreased with the CO content and the cure temperature. It is interpreted that the networks of epoxy matrix obtained at high temperature are apparently looser and more flexible due to the lower crosslinking density. The toughness was slightly increased with the CO content at $40^{\circ}C$ of curing temperature. The toughness increased with increasing the cure temperature and CO content.

Leaf blight of Castor Bean Plants caused by 2 Species of Phytophthora(oral)

  • A leaf blight disease caused by a species of Phytophthora has been observed on castor bean plants growing near dwelling houses in Manchon-dong, Daegu since 1993. The first isolate that we have kept was producing papillate, ovoid-obpyriform to obpyriform sporangia with on a simple sympodial sporangiophore from diseased tissue placed on water agar plates. The pure isolate, however, did not sporulate on agar media, and rarely even in water, but produced mycelial swellings and chlamydospores in water. Sporangia measured 26.1-77.4 ${\times}$ 23.2-44.0$\mu\textrm{m}$. Chlamydospores were either terminal or intercalary, and measured 24-29.4$\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter. Sex organs were not formed in a single culture. In 2003, another pure isolate was isolated from castor bean plants with similar symptoms at the same place. The second isolate was distinct from the first one in that the second isolate was readily and abundantly sporulating on V8 juice agar plates. Sporangia of the second isolate were papillate, ovoid and caduceus with a pedicel. Sporangia measured 19.5-48.8 x 17.6-34.3$\mu\textrm{m}$ with 3.7$\mu\textrm{m}$ high papilla and 4.1$\mu\textrm{m}$ long pedicel. No sex organs were formed in a single isolate culture. Both isolates were pathogenic on castor bean plants. Results of the efforts to identify the two species of Phytophthora will be discussed.

Composting of the Mixtures with Pig Manure and Castor Meal (돈분과 피마자박의 혼합비율에 따른 퇴비화 연구)

  • This study was conducted to estimate the humificating grade according to experiment of physico-chemical characterization and phyto-toxicity during composting of using with pig manure and castor meal. The material ratios of the compost which was mixed with pig manure(P), castor meal(C), and saw dust(S) were 5 : 1 : 4(PCS-I), 5 : 2.5 : 2.5(PCS-II) and 5 : 4 : 1(PCS-III) by volume to volume, and they were decomposed for 60 days. In the result, the changes of temperature in all treatments during composting were rapidly increased more than $68^{\circ}C$ at the incipient stage, and gradually decreased within $39^{\circ}C$ at 60 days the after treatment. pH was slowly increased from 7.5 to 7.7, and the C/N ratio was 13~14 at the final composting stage. The low C/N ratio value in this compost was caused by the castor meal contented high nitrogen level(T-N 5.7 %). G.I.(germination index) was showed 73 to 78 range in all treatments at the $60^{th}$ day. Among all treatments PCS-I was appeared to be the best condition for composting.

  • Castor oil can be used as a useful raw material for chemical industries such as intermediates of surfactants through hydrogenation reaction. In this study, effects of the preparation method and pretreatment condition on the nickel catalyst for the hydrogenation of castor oil were investigated. The nickel catalyst was supported on the silica carrier by the precipitation method with different Ni contents, solution pH values, and precipitants. Repeated pretreatments of oxidation and reduction cycles were then carried out. The activity of the nickel catalyst was measured by comparing the iodine value of the castor oil. The dispersion of nickel on the catalyst was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), $N_2$ adsorption-desorption, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The activity of nickel catalyst was also compared by CO oxidation experiments. The redispersion of nickel occurred on the silica by repeated oxidation and reduction cycles, and this effect contributed to promoting the castor oil hydrogenation activity.

Analysis of Properties of Water-Dispersed Bio-Polyurethane Based on Caster Oil for Lamb Leather Surface (Lamb Leather용 Caster Oil 기반 수분산 바이오 폴리우레탄필름의 제조)

  • Unmodified castor oil (CO) was used to obtain a castor-based aqueous polyurethane (CPUD) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) was used to obtain a transparent film. The mixing effect of polypropyleneglycole (PPG) was analyzed to increase flexibility. In addition, ethylenediamine (EDA) was used as a chain extender. Tensile strength, elongation, and abrasion resistance were measured according to the change according to the castor oil content and the change in the chain extender, respectively. The tensile strength of the sample containing a lot of castor oil was 1.112 kgf/㎟, and the elongation was 88%. The tensile strength of the sample containing a lot of chain extender was 3.33kgf/㎟, and the elongation was 99%. The surface strength was visually confirmed through SEM. Thermal Stability and Fracture Toughness of Epoxy Resins Modified with Epoxidized Castor Oil and Al2O3 Nanoparticles

  • This study examined the effects of the epoxidized castor oil (ECO) and $Al_2O_3$ content on the thermal stability and fracture toughness of the diglycidylether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA)/ECO/$Al_2O_3$ ternary composites using a range of techniques. The thermal stability of the composites was decreased by the addition of ECO and $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles. The fracture toughness of the composites was improved significantly by the addition of ECO and $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles. The composite containing 3 wt % $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles showed the maximum flexural strength. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed tortuous cracks in the DGEBA/ECO/$Al_2O_3$ composites, which prevented deformation and crack propagation.
