  • The effects of drying temperature on the microstructure of porous W fabricated by the freeze-casting process of tert-butyl alcohol slurry with WO3 powder was investigated. Green bodies were hydrogen-reduced at 800℃ for 1 h and sintered at 1000℃ for 6 h. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that WO3 powders were completely converted to W without any reaction phases by hydrogen reduction. The sintered body showed pores aligned in the direction of tert-butyl alcohol growth, and the porosity and pore size decreased as the amount of WO3 increased from 5 to 10vol%. As the drying temperature of the frozen body increased from -25℃ to -10℃, the pore size and thickness of the struts increased. The change in microstructural characteristics based on the amount of powder added and the drying temperature was explained by the growth behavior of the freezing agent and the degree of rearrangement of the solid powder during the solidification of the slurry.

  • Korean bell is a macroscopically axi-symmetrical structure, but has a slight asymmetry due to complex patterns and casting irregularity. Small asymmetry separates one vibration mode into a mode pair with slight frequency difference. The mode pair interferes and creates a beat. The vivid beat with an appropriate period makes the bell sound magnificent and lively feeling. In this study, we propose a method to make the vivid beat using artificial dumshoi. This method creates the vivid beat by designing artificial dumshoi that overwhelms the bell asymmetry. To this end, the asymmetry of Korean bell is quantified by analyzing the beat period data of a number of Korean bells cast in modern times. Based on the measured beat period data, the magnitude of asymmetry is quantified using an equivalent bell model and artificial dumshoi is applied. The movement of mode pair by dumshoi is predicted through finite element analysis. Finally, a design example of the artificial dumshoi for clear beat is introduced.

  • The characteristics and behavior of bullets are important because they are directly related to the firearm performance. However, research related to bullets have been small. In this paper, scientific analysis was conducted to find out the materials and manufacturing process of metal bullets during the Joseon Dynasty, owned by Korea Army Museum, and the types of firearms available were classified and organized according to the bullet diameter. As a result, bullets were classified into iron bullets, lead bullets, and lead-coated iron bullets. Most of the iron bullets and lead bullets were made from casting. Some iron bullets were made from forging. And the lead-coated iron bullet was made by pouring molten lead after putting the iron bullet into the mold. Finally, the bullets could be used for Hand Cannon, Matchlock Musket, Frankish Cannon, Hyeon-ja Cannon, Dae-Wiwon Cannon, Small Cannon, and Hong-Yi Cannon.

  • Tuna purse seine fishery (TPF) constitute more than 60% of distant water fishery production in Korea based on a statistic of 2018, and 28 ships from four different companies were under operation at the western and central Pacific Ocean. On this research, common risk factors during TPF were investigated via enumeration of five years Korean fisherman's insurance payment statement, followed by some counterplans to diminish the accident rate. The accident rate of TPF on the Pacific Ocean peaked by 43.0% in 2014 and constantly decreased to 23.0% until 2018, presenting an average of 33.6%. Meanwhile, the accident rate on the Indian Ocean reached the highest point 55.1% in 2014 and declined to 11.6% in 2016, having an average of 24.7%. The average accident rate of the Indian Ocean scored 8.9% lower than the rate of the Pacific Ocean, but no statistic significance was observed. Depending on the process of operation, 'casting or hauling of net' was the most frequent part that people received an injury (40.4%). When the accidents were classified by their types, 'falling down' was the most recurrent cause of the injuries (28.5%). At the point of severity, the worst injuries were induced by crush hazard. Considering aforementioned accident frequency and severity, all the factors on the accident type list were divided into three different groups including high risk, moderate risk, and common risk. This study is expected to contribute to the reduction of occupational accidents during the work of fishermen and establishment of a safety management system for distance water fishing vessels.

  • TMCP(Thermo Mechanical Control Process) steel was continuously cast (CC) by varying the argon gas flow rate and vacuum time in the Ruhrstahl Heraeus (RH) refining process. Using the CC specimens, the distribution of the inclusions and the mechanical properties were evaluated. A lot of oxides and Al-O type inclusions were observed. The average Vickers hardness did not show a constant, but showed dispersion in a certain range. The shape and scale parameters of the CC specimen with an argon gas flow rate of 160Nm3 and a vacuum time of 12 minutes was the best. Mechanical properties (tensile strength, yield strength and elongation) were consistent with the Weibull probability distribution analysis results. The impact resistance was the best for CC specimens with an argon flow rate of 140 Nm3 and a vacuum time of 12 minutes. Although the inclusions and mechanical properties of the CC specimens were evaluated according to the argon gas flow rate and vacuum time, these values were no significant difference.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of removable partial denture (RPD) frameworks produced using different digital protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 80 frameworks for RPDs were produced using CAD-CAM technology and divided into four groups of twenty (n = 20): Group 1, Titanium frameworks manufactured by digital metal laser sintering (DMLS); Group 2, Co-Cr frameworks manufactured by DMLS; Group 3, Polyamide PA12 castable resin manufactured by multi-jet fusion (MJF); and Group 4, Metal (Co-Cr) casting by using lost-wax technique. After the digital acquisition, eight specific areas were selected in order to measure the Δ-error value at the intaglio surface of RPD. The minimum value required for point sampling density (0.4 mm) was derived from the sensitivity analysis. The obtained Δ-error mean value was used for comparisons: 1. between different manufacturing processes; 2. between different manufacturing techniques in the same area of interest (AOI); and 3. between different AOI of the same group. RESULTS. The Δ-error mean value of each group ranged between -0.002 (Ti) and 0.041 (Co-Cr) mm. The Pearson's Chi-squared test revealed significant differences considering all groups paired two by two, except for group 3 and 4. The multiple comparison test documented a significant difference for each AOI among group 1, 3, and 4. The multiple comparison test showed significant differences among almost all different AOIs of each group. CONCLUSION. All Δ-mean error values of all digital protocols for manufacturing RPD frameworks optimally fit within the clinical tolerance limit of trueness and precision.

  • The purpose of this study is to derive the design characteristics of the pattern, which can effectively support the building facade design and to analyze the correlation of their characteristics. This paper deals with five different design patterns suggested by Ben Pell. They are the applied pattern, perforated pattern, layered pattern, casting pattern, and tiled pattern. This paper analyzes the design characteristics of the applied pattern, which shows the highest point in the previous survey. The 'continuous' has a high emotional correlation. The high correlation with the emotional word 'continuous' and 'regular' was derived. The final emotional design characteristic is 'continuous-discontinuous', and 'irregular-regular'. and these emotional words can be summarized as the relatively highest correlation. In this paper, it is worth analyzing design characteristics of building facade by a support of digital technology and discussing utilization of design characteristics derived.

  • Recently, there has been an increasing attempt to replace defect detection inspections in the manufacturing industry using deep learning techniques. However, obtaining substantial high-quality labeled data to enhance the performance of deep learning models entails economic and temporal constraints. As a solution for this problem, semi-supervised learning, using a limited amount of labeled data, has been gaining traction. This study assesses the effectiveness of semi-supervised learning in the defect detection process of manufacturing using the MixMatch algorithm. The MixMatch algorithm incorporates three dominant paradigms in the semi-supervised field: Consistency regularization, Entropy minimization, and Generic regularization. The performance of semi-supervised learning based on the MixMatch algorithm was compared with that of supervised learning using defect image data from the metal casting process. For the experiments, the ratio of labeled data was adjusted to 5%, 10%, 25%, and 50% of the total data. At a labeled data ratio of 5%, semi-supervised learning achieved a classification accuracy of 90.19%, outperforming supervised learning by approximately 22%p. At a 10% ratio, it surpassed supervised learning by around 8%p, achieving a 92.89% accuracy. These results demonstrate that semi-supervised learning can achieve significant outcomes even with a very limited amount of labeled data, suggesting its invaluable application in real-world research and industrial settings where labeled data is limited.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a common hydrophilic polymer that is synthesized through the saponification reaction of poly(vinyl ester)-based polymers, mostly using poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) as a precursor. The heterogeneous saponification reaction of poly(vinyl ester)-based films leads to PVA films with new surface properties. Cellulose acetate (CA), in which the hydroxyl group of cellulose is replaced by an acetyl group, is a typical cellulose derivative capable of overcoming the low processability of cellulose due to strong hydrogen bonding. In this study, P(VAc/VPi)/CA blended films were prepared by the solvent casting, and then PVA/Cellulose blended films with improved surface properties were prepared by heterogeneous saponification. The structural changes caused by heterogeneous saponification were confirmed by FT-IR analysis, where both saponification and deacetylation reactions occurred in the saponification solution. In addition, the surface property changes were analyzed by FE-SEM and contact angle analyses, and the transmittance changes of the modified films were also assessed.
