We extend the octree subdivision process from Cartesian coordinates to spherical coordinates to develop more efficient space-partitioning structure for surface models. As an application of the proposed structure, we apply the octree subdivision in spherical coordinates ("S-Octree") to geometry compression in progressive mesh coding. Most previous researches on geometry-driven progressive mesh compression are devoted to improve predictability of geometry information. Unlike this, we focus on the efficient information storage for the space-partitioning structure. By eliminating void space at initial stage and aligning the R axis for the important components in geometry information, the S-Octree improves the efficiency in geometry information coding. Several meshes are tested in the progressive mesh coding based on the S-Octree and the results for performance parameters are presented.
The Immersed boundary method(IBM) is one of CFD techniques which can simulate flow field around complex objectives using simple Cartesian grid system. In the previous studies the IBM has mostly been implemented to fractional step method based Navier-Stokes solvers. In these cases, pressure buildup near IB was found to occur when linear interpolation and stadard mass conservation is used and the interpolation scheme became complicated when higher order of interpolation is adopted. In this study, we implement the IBM to an incompressible Navier-Stokes solver which uses SIMPLE algorithm. Bi-linear and quadratic interpolation equations were formulated by using only geometric information of boundary to reconstruct velocities near IB. Flow around 2D circular cylinder at Re=40 and 100 was solved by using these formulations. It was found that the pressure buildup was not observed even when the bi-linear interpolation was adopted. The use of quadratic interpolation made the predicted aerodynamic forces in good agreement with those of previous studies.
In this paper, the authors developed a multidimensional interpolation method inside a finite volume cell in the computation of high-order accurate numerical flux such as the fifth order WEND (weighted essentially non-oscillatory) scheme. This numerical method starts from a simple Taylor series expansion in a proper spatial order of accuracy, and the WEND filter is used for the reconstruction of sharp nonlinear waves like shocks in the compressible flow. Two kinds of interpolations are developed: one is for the cell-averaged values of conservative variables divided in one mother cell (Type 1), and the other is for the vertex values in the individual cells (Type 2). The result of the present study can be directly used to the cell refinement as well as the convective flux between finer and coarser cells in the Cartesian adaptive grid system (Type 1) and to the post-processing as well as the viscous flux in the Navier-Stokes equations on any types of structured and unstructured grids (Type 2).
Mesh generation for the region of interest is prerequisite for numerical analysis of governing partial differential equations describing phenomena with proper physic. Mesh generation is, however, usually considered as a major obstacle for a routine application of numerical approaches in Engineering applications. Therefore automatic mesh generation is highly pursued. In this paper automated quadrilateral surface mesh generation is proposed. According to the present method, Cartesian cells of proper resolution for a region bounding the whole region of interest are first generated and the interior cells are identified. Then projecting their surface meshes onto the boundary surfaces gives surface mesh consisting of quadrilateral cells. This method has been implemented as an application program, and example cases are given.

In the present paper, a numerical method based on the constraint interpolation profile (CIP) method is applied for simulating two-dimensional violent sloshing problems. The free surface boundary value problem is considered as a multiphase problem which includes water and air. A stationary Cartesian grid system is adopted, and an interface capturing method is used to trace the shape of free surface profile. The CIP combined unified procedure (CCUP) scheme is applied for flow solver, and the tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) scheme is used for interface capturing. Numerical simulations have been carried out for partially-filled 2D tanks under forced sway and roll motions at various filling depths and frequencies. The computational results are compared with experiments and/or the other numerical results to validate the present numerical method.
In the present study, two-dimensional numerical investigation of flow past a square cylinder beneath the free surface has been performed to identify the effects of presence of the free surface. An immersed boundary method was adopted for implementation of the cylinder cross-section in a Cartesian grid system. Also, a level-set method was used to capture the interface of two fluids. To prevent transition to three-dimensional flow, Reynolds number chosen for this simulation was 150. The cases for Froude number 0.2 and gap ratio(h/D) between 0.25 and 5.00 were examined. At the specific Reynolds number, we study the effects of gap ratio on flow characteristics around a square cylinder by computing flow fields, force coefficients and Strouhal number.
Recently, an iterative reconstruction-reprojection (IRR) algorithm has been suggested for application to incomplete data computed tomography (CT). In the IRR, the interpolation operation is performed in the image space during reconstruction-reprojection. The errors associated with the interpolation degrade the reconstructed image and may cause divergence unless a large number of rays is used. In this paper, we propose an improved IRR algorithm which eliminates the need for interpolation. The proposed algorithm adopts a new sampling scheme in which samples (projection data) is taken in phase with the samples of the Cartesian grid.
The incorporation of radiation from massive stars is essential for modeling the dynamics and chemistry of star-forming clouds, yet it is a computationally demanding task for three-dimensional problems. We describe the implementation and tests of radiative transfer module due to point sources on a three-dimensional Cartesian grid in the Eulerian MHD code Athena. To solve the integral form of the radiation transfer equation, we adopt a widely-used long characteristics method with spatially adaptive ray tracing in which rays are split when sampling of cells becomes coarse. We use a completely asynchronous communication pattern between processors to accelerate transport of rays through a computational domain, a major source of performance bottleneck. The results of strong and weak scaling tests show that our code performs well with a large number of processors. We apply our radiation hydrodynamics code to some test problems involving dynamical expansion of HII regions.
Effect of computational domain size in simulating of periodic obstacle flow has been investigated for the flow past tube banks. Reynolds number, defined by freestream velocity (U) and cylinder diameter (d), was fixed as 200, and center-to-center distance (P) as 1.5d. In-line square array was considered. Drag coefficient, lift coefficient and Strouhal number were calculated depending on domain size. Circular cylinders were implemented on a Cartesian grid system by using an immersed boundary method. Boundary condition is periodic in both streamwise and lateral directions. Previous studies in literature often use a square domain with a side length of P, which contains only one cylinder. However, this study reveals that size is improper. Especially, RMS values of flow-induced forces are most sensitive to the domain size.

In the study, numerical simulation on the greenwater impact load of free surface offshore structure in the regular waves using fixed cartesian grid system and Modified Marker-Density (MMD) method were carried out and the results were reviewed. In order to compare numerical simulation and experimental results, the FPSO with the scale ratio of 1/100 model ship with fixed rectangular deck was selected and turbulence characteristic of the flow was considered by applying the Sub-Grid Scale (SGS) in laminar flow. As a result, it is reviewed how the greenwater impact load inflowed from bow in regular headsea wave influence the flow on the deck and the flow characteristic by numerical simulation and the experiment results were compared and reviewed. Based on this study, it would be useful to numerically study the effect of greenwater on offshore structure.
