  • Underwater images carry information that is useful in the fields of aquaculture, underwater military security, navigation, transportation, and so on. In this research, we transmitted an underwater image through various underwater mediums in the presence of underwater turbulence and beam attenuation effects using a high-speed visible optical carrier signal. The optical beam undergoes scintillation because of the turbulence and attenuation effects; therefore, distorted images were observed at the receiver end. To understand the behavior of the communication media, we obtained the bit error rate (BER) performance of the system with respect to the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Also, the structural similarity index (SSI) and peak SNR (PSNR) metrics of the received image were evaluated. Based on the received images, we employed suitable nonlinear filters to recover the distorted images and enhance them further. The BER, SSI, and PSNR metrics of the specific nonlinear filters were also evaluated and compared with the unfiltered metrics. These metrics were evaluated using the on-off keying and binary phase-shift keying modulation techniques for the 50-m and 100-m links for beam attenuation resulting from pure seawater, clear ocean water, and coastal ocean water mediums.

  • Recently, number of intentional jamming has increased significantly. If GNSS jammers are activated, user receivers can be largely influenced due to the vulnerable characteristic of the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) signal. When the reception power of the jamming signal and that of the navigation signal are similar, the C/A (Coarse Acquisition) chip delay error can occur in the delay locked loop. To evaluate the jamming effect, a new measurement model is formulated based on previous research works. The new model explains how the jamming to signal ratio affects the ranging measurement accuracy and other parameters. To evaluate the validity of the newly formulated model, the experiment results of the previous research works under actual jamming environment are utilized. By evaluating the consistency of the carrier-to-noise ratio (C/N0) and the position error with the actual jamming environment, the validity of the newly formulated model is verified.

  • In this paper, a cross-layer resource allocation mechanism is proposed for wireless multimedia service. In particular, a game theory based on quality of service (QoS) for multimedia users is introduced to deal with the fairness of network resource allocation in wireless networks. Moreover, the channel states of wireless users are additionally regarded under the cross-layer design in WiMAX environment. In details, the bargaining solution is adopted to discover the efficient and fair resource allocation strategy for multimedia service in considering QoS in the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and the channel states in the carrier-to-interface ratio (CINR). The proposed mechanism is illustrated and evaluated by simulation results of transmitting video sequences in WiMAX environment.

  • In this paper, we compare the performance of IS-OFDM(interference suppressing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) system with that of the conventional OFDM system. Each parallel branch symbol of IS-OFDM is multiplied by the orthogonal sequence and distributed into all sub-carriers. Then, each sub-carrier transmits information composed of the symbol components of all parallel branches in the given frame. The structure of IS-OFDM shows the frequency diversity characteristic. Therefore, IS-OFDM can be robust to the narrowband interference. BER performances are found in the narrow-band interference and a harmonic noise channels. When JSR(Jamming to signal ratio) increases from -10 dB to +10 dB in the constant interference bandwidth, IS-OFDM outperforms the conventional OFDM and the BER difference between IS-OFDM and OFDM is reduced as JSR increases. Also, the similar properly can be shown when interference bandwidth increases at the constant JSR. In the harmonic noise channel, we can find the good performance of IS-OFDM when the h-rate(harmonic noise bandwidth to signal bandwidth ratio) increases from 0.01 to 0.8. So, simulation results show that the IS-OFDM is more robust to the interference than the conventional OFDM.

  • Reliable detection and parameter estimation of a radar cross section(RCS) fluctuating target have been known as a difficult task. To reduce the effect of RCS fluctuation, various diversity techniques have been considered. This paper presents a new method for synthesizing a covariance matrix applicable to a coherent multi-input multi-output(MIMO) radar with frequency diversity. It is achieved by efficiently combining covariance matrices corresponding to different carrier frequencies such that the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) in the combined covariance matrix is maximized. The value of a synthesized covariance matrix is assessed by examining the phase curves of its entries and the improvement on direction of arrival(DOA) estimation.

  • The error rate pquations of digital radio signals transmitted throught the Nakagami's m-distribution fading channel have been both for nondiversity reception and for diversity reception cases in the environmment of Gaussin noise. Using the derived equation. erro rate performance has been evaluated and represented in figures as a function of carrier to noise ratio, fading figure, and the power correlation coefficient between two diversity branches. By comparing the diversity reception case with nondiversity reception case. We could measure the amount of error rate performance improvenment of digital radiosignals in fanding enviroment.

  • In this paper, LPI(low probability of intercept) and AJ(anti jamming) performance of the chirped BPSK system are analyzed. In the chirp method the cyclostationary of the signal is eliminated, since the instantaneous frequency is varied randomly within the whole spread bandwidth. Therefore, chirp method is considered for good LPI system against DAM(delay-and-multiplier) or SC (squaring circuit) interceptor which detects the chip rate or carrier frequency. Longer chirp duration makes the LPI performance better. From the simulation results, the chirp method has better AJ performance than DS(direct sequence) system in the PBNJ(partial band noise jammer) channel. At the same JSR(jammer to signal power ratio) level, chirped BPSK system has more robust AJ performance against MTJ(multi-tone jammer) than PBNJ.

  • We propose an ATR (Adaptive Tone Reservation) scheme based on clipping noise for PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio) reduction of OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) signals. The proposed scheme is composed of three steps: clipping, tone selection, and TR procedures. In the first step, the peak samples in the IFFT (Inverse Fast Fourier Transform) outputs are scaled down by clipping. In the second step, the sub-carrier position where the power of the clipping noise is the maximum, is selected. Finally, the generic TR procedure is performed. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme does not require all the possible combinations for the original TR procedures, while maintaining the PAPR reduction performance.
