Purpose: The aim of the present study was to identify the relationship between educational needs and the caregiving burden of primary caregivers with stroke patient. Methods: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted in 2016 with 115 primary caregivers for stroke patients at a university hospital. The caregiving burden and educational needs were investigated using structured questionnaires via interviews. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, the t-test or ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics version 23.0. Results: The scores of caregiving burden and educational needs of primary caregiver with stroke patient were $77.65{\pm}1.66$ and $123.33{\pm}2.37$, respectively. The caregiving burden was associated with health status in primary caregivers' general characteristics. The caregiving burden and educational needs of primary caregivers have a significant correlation (r = .44, p <.001). Conclusions: Educational needs of primary caregivers with stroke patient are associated with their caregiving burden. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a primary caregiver centered intervention program considering educational needs to improve their caregiving burden. Also, to promote quality of nursing, there is the need to increase the educating competency of nurse and nursing professionalism of clinical nurse using various educational training program.
This study analyzes the effects of caring for grandchildren on Korean grandparents' health, using the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging from 2006 to 2012. We investigate how caregiving is provided and analyze the effects of caregiving on grandparents' physical health, mental health, and health-related behaviors. As elderly people's health is generally frail, it is unclear whether the provision of childcare affects their health negatively. We control for the endogeneity of caregiving by an individual fixed effect (FE) model and instrumental variable-fixed effect (FE-IV) models. Using these models, we determine the endogeneity of caregiving and show that the significant effects of caregiving on health disappear as we control for endogeneity in the FE and FE-IV models. Even after controlling for endogeneity, we find that caregiving increases the probability of feeling pain as well as the number of different types of pain. Furthermore, caregiving increases the probability of restrictions on daily activities because of pain. On the other hand, caregiving reduces the symptoms of depression. In relation to health-related behaviors, caregiving reduces the probability of physical exercise and regular meals. Our results imply that although caregiving has a positive effect on mental health, the increase in physical pain and in non-healthy behaviors may lead to a deterioration of the caregiver's long-term health, which in turn may increase the medical costs of the elderly. Potential policy alternatives are discussed in the paper.
The concept of empathy was examined In the professional caregiving relationship and its application was extended to the context of informal caregiving. Using the Lazarus and Folkman model, the influence of empathy on the caregiver's experience in the caregiving relationship was illustrated. The effects of the caregiver's empathy on his/her own caregiving outcomes were investigated by examining the relationship between empathy and burnout experience and life satisfaction. Empathy increased emotional exhaustion while increased personal accomplishment and personalization, indicating conflicting relationship between empathy and burnout. This conflict relationship between empathy and burnout can be explained by suggesting the distinct roles of two dimensions of empathy emotional and cognitive. The needs for more research to support the critical roles of empathy in informal caregiving context and to examine the definite roles of two dimensions of empathy were suggested.
This study investigated the relationships among factors in the caregiving process for caregivers with older parents. A model was presented to help identify some of the dynamics in he family caregiving process Fifty-nine caregivers participated in the study. They were adult chldren who were currently providing care to at least one older parent. Using LVPLS program support for the proposed structural equation model was found through the identification of paths among the variables, The findings indicated that the experience of life events was negatively associated with perceptions and positively with active coping A positive relationship was found between perceptions and active coping. Past relationships had positive effects on perceptions and relationships with parents. Active coping was negatively associated with the relationship with parents. whereas perceptions were not a good predictor for the relationship with parents. The results of the family caregiving process model demonstrated that past relationships and perceptions of caregiving were related to current caregiving experiences with older parents.
The Purpose of this study was to explore the degree of caregiving stress in caring for dementia elderly according to objective resources, perceived adequacy resource and locus of control in homemakers. The subjects of this study were 141 married women who had cared for dementia elderly. A questionnaire was used as survey method. The data was analyzed by means of Cronbach $\alpha$, factor analysis, MANOVA, and Scheffe test. The main findings were as follows First, there was significant difference in the degree of caregiving stress in caring for dementia elderly according to objective resources. Second, the degree of caregiving stress in caring for dementia elderly was significantly different according to perceived adequacy resource. Third, the degree of caregiving stress in caring for dementia elderly differed significantly according locus of control.
Although the relation of caregiving burden to well-being has been frequently examined, the effect of caregiving on marital quality has been virtually ignored. The current study explores the impact of parent care on the marriages of adult children by using a nationally representative longitudinal sample. It was hypothesized that parent care would negatively influence the marital quality of adult child caregivers, the effect of parent care would differ between women and men caregivers, and the nature of marital relationship variables would moderate or mediate the impact of care on marital quality. Overall, marital quality does not appear to suffer if caregiving load is light. However, the impact of parental caregiving on some dimensions of marital quality was conditioned by gender, gender role attitudes, and congruence between attitudes and behavior.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of perceived gain in caregiving on the positive aspects of psychological well-being. The data were gathered from 262 informal caregivers who provided care for relatives or friends in need due to illness or disability. The main results were as follows: First, overall level of perceived gain in caregiving was above the median level. Second, higher gains were perceived by the caregivers who were more educated and who had more remote relationships with care recipients. Third, perceived gain was a significant variable influencing caregiver' psychological well-being. In addition, when the perceived gain variable was added to the regression model, no socio-demographic characteristics of the caregiver and the caregiving context were found to be related to psychological well-being. Theoretical and practical implications of these results were discussed.
Purpose: The aim of the study is to determine factors influencing quality of caregiving by caregivers for the elderly with dementia. Methods: Data were collected from 87 caregivers for elders with dementia who had visited in Busan Metropolitan Center for Dementia and D-University hospital outpatient center from July 10 to September 30, 2015. A self-reported questionnaire was used to assess the severity of the elders' dementia and knowledge of dementia, burdens and quality of caregiving by the caregivers. The SPSS 21.0 version program was used for data analysis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression. Results: Significant predictors of quality of caregiving by caregivers included caregivers' burdens (explanation power 25%), knowledge of dementia (explanation power 4%) and levels of education (explanation power 3%). These factors explained 32.3% of the variances in quality of caregiving. Conclusion: Burdens on caregivers were a major factor that decreased quality of caregiving, and knowledge of dementia was a factor that increased it. These findings show that educational programs and intervention for reducing burdens and improving knowledge of dementia are necessary to improve quality of caregiving by caregivers.
