The crystal structure of sulindac, $C_{20}H_{17}Fo_3S$, one of the nonsteroid antiinflammatory agents, has been determined by the X-ray diffraction techniques using diffractometer data obtained by the $\varpi-2{\theta}$ scan technique with Cu $$K_{\alpha}$$ radiation from a crystal with space group symmetry Pbca and unit cell parameters a = 8.166(1), b = 18.291(8), c = 23.245(10) ${\AA}.$ The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by full-matrix least-squares to a final R = 0.11 for the 1153 observed reflections. The carboxyl group is nearly perpendicular to the indenyl ring as observed in indomethacin. The dihedral angle between the indenyl and phenyl rings is $35^{\circ}while$ the corresponding angle in indomethacin is $67^{\circ}.$ Crystal packing consists of a hydrogen bond and partial ring stacking between the indenyl rings.

By utilizillg whole cell enzyme of the Xantho-monas citri IFO 3835, cephalexin is synthesized directly from 7-amino-deacetoxy cephalosporanic acid (7-ADCA) and phenyl glycine methyl ester (PGM). To date, cephalexin has been manufactu-red by chemical process involving fairly large number of steps to protect the amino group of phenly glycine and carboxyl group of 7-ADCA. However, the enzymatic process involves only a single step with 85% conversion in 90 minutes. The fermentation variables studied indicate that oxygen transfer is limiting step in the enzyme production. Optimum conditions for enzymatic reaction were 37 C, pH 6.0, and the optimum substrate molar ratio of PGM to 7-ADCA was 2. Other variables that are related to the biochemical properties of whole cell enzyme temperature stability, pH stability, kinetic constants, reusing effect, enzyme loading effect were also evaluated.

To prepare the waterborne silicone acrylic resin coatings, acrylic resin was prepared by a radical polymerization. Glass transition temperature(Tg) of the acrylic copolymer was fixed at 30℃ and the contents of tertiary amine monomer(DMAEMA), were varied to be 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt%, hydroxyl monomer, and carboxyl monomer were fixed 10 wt%, and 4 wt% respectively. γ-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane(GPTMS) containing epoxy group was used for curing agents. The eqivalent ratio of amine to epoxy was 1:1. The prepared coatings exhibited excellent adhesion to various substrates, and various physical properties of the coatings were satisfactory. The gloss retension and color difference were improved at low tertiary amine concentration. The coatings containing 10wt% tertiary amine concentration have especially good weather resistant properties.
When $[U-^{14}C]$ 3,3', 4,4'-tetrachloroazobenzene$([U-^{14}C]\;TCAB)$ was added to the $MM_2$ medium as a sole carbon source for the isolated microorganisms and incubated, some radioactive metabolites were detected by autoradiography. No $^{14}CO_2$ was evolved from $[U-^{14}C]\;TCAB$ which was added as a sole carbon source to an organic matter-free soil inoculated by the isolates, wetted with the $MM_2$ salt medium, and incubated at $30^{\circ}C$. One of the metabolites in pure culture of Achromobacter group VD, which was isolated and identified, was tentatively identified as a compound of m/z 250 by means of GC/MS. The possible pathways for its formation are thought to include dechlorination from the TCAB structure, hydroxylation, ortho fission of the two benzene rings, and reduction of the resulting carboxyl group.
Wool yarns were treated in dimethylformamide solutions containing various concntrations of three dibasic acid anhydrides: succinic, itaconic, and phthalic arthydrides in various conditions. The structurl aspects of these dibasic acid anhydries are different: succinic, itaconic, and phthalic acid arthydrides have saturated aliphatic ethylene, unsaturated aliphatic vinyl and aromatic phenyl one groups, respectively. The properties of acylated wool keratin are as follows: Decreasing amino group and increasing carboxyl group by acylation lowered the hydrophilic property, and then moisture regain, and decreased acid dye uptake and enhanced cationic dye uptake of wool keratin. In the case of phthalic acid anhydries, in spite of lowest acyl content, the minimum of moisture regain was resulted from the bulk benzen ring, occuping much more voids on wool keratin molecules than other reagents. Acid solubility was increased by the decrease of amino group and hydrogen bonding by acylation. Alkali solubility was also increased formation of new amide group on the side chain of keratin, which can be degraded easily by alkali. In the case of phthalic acid anhydride, the relative high solubility was resulted from the much higher molecular weight of dissolved fractions. The surface of wool keratin was not damaged by treatment with any acylating agent.
The action of ascorbic acid on the sodium Plus potassium activated ATPase activity in the rabbit red cell membrane has been investigated and the experiments were also designed to determine the mechanism of action if ascorbic acid on the ATPase activity The following results were observed. 1. The activity of the NaK ATPase from red cell membrane is stimulated by ascorbic acid and the concentration of ascorbic acid for maximal activity is about 8 mM. 2. The activating effect of ascorbic acid on the ATPase activaty, with a given concentration of sodium in the medium, is increased by raisins the potassium concentration but activity ratio is decreased. 3. The activating effect of ascorbic acid on the ATPase activity, with a given concentration of potassium in the medium, is increased by raising the sodium concentration but activity ratio is decreased. 4. The action of ascorbic acid on the ATPase activity is stimulated by calcium ions and activity ratio is increased by raising the calcium concentration. 5. The activating effect of ascorbic acid on the ATPase activity was not related to the sulfhydryl group of cysteine or the hydroxyl group of threonine. 6. The activating effect of ascorbic acid on the ATPase activity is due to amino group and carboxyl group of the enzyme of NaK ATPase.
B13 analogues are being considered as therapeutic agents for cancer cells, since B13 is a ceramide analogue and inhibits ceramidase to promote apoptosis in cancer cells. B13 sulfonamides are assumed to have biological activity similar to B13, since they are made by bioisosterically substituting the carboxyl moiety of B13 with sulfone group. Twenty B13 sulfonamides were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxicities against human colon cancer HT-29 and lung cancer A549 cell lines using MTT assays. Replacement of the amide group with a sulfonamide group increased cytotoxicity in both cancer cell lines. The sulfonamides with long alkyl chains exhibited activities two to three times more potent than that of B13 and compound (15) had the most potent activity with $IC_{50}$ values of 27 and $28.7{\mu}M$ for HT-29 and A549, respectively. The comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) and comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) were used to carry out QSAR molecular modeling of these compounds. The predictive CoMSIA models for HT-29 and A549 gave cross-validated q2 values of 0.703 and 0.830, respectively. From graphical analysis of these models, we suppose that the stereochemistry of 1,3-propandiol is not important for activity and that introduction of a sulfonamide group and long alkyl chains into B13 can increase cytotoxicity.

6FDA-based polyimides were prepared from the thermal imidization reaction of 6FDA with diamines of BAPAF, DAP, and DABA having a polar group of hydroxyL or carboxyl. Properties of the dense polyimide membranes were characterized and their gas permeation properties for H$_2$, $CO_2$, $O_2$, $N_2$, and CH$_4$ were investigated. Permeabilities, diffusion coefficients and diffusivity selectivities of polar group-containing polyimide membranes including 6FDA-BAPAF, 6FDA-DAP, and 6FDA-DABA polymer for the gases did not change largely. The separation properties of 6FDA-TrMPD polyimide membrane used as a reference polymer were compared with those of the polyimide membranes mentioned above. It was found that the polyimides of 6FDA-BAPAF, 6FDA-DAP, and 6FDA-DABA, which were soluble in alcohol or/and 2-methoxyethanol, could be applicable to the preparation of a dense composite membrane by dip-coating method.

Various studies have been conducted to improve silica dispersion of silica filled tire tread compounds; among them, silica wet masterbatch (WMB) technology is known to be suitable for manufacturing silica filled compounds that have high silica content and high dispersibility. Till now, the WMB study is focused on the natural rubber (NR) or emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber (ESBR) that does not have a silica-affinity functional group, and a study of NR or ESBR having a silica-affinity functional group is still not well known. Unlike the dry masterbatch technology, the WMB technology can solve the problems associated with the high Mooney viscosity when applied to silica-friendly rubber. However, a coagulant suitable for each functional group has not yet been determined. Therefore, in this study, different coagulant applied silica WMB was prepared by applying calcium chloride, sulfuric acid, acetic acid, and propionic acid by using a carboxyl group functionalized reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer ESBR. The evaluation of the WMB compounds revealed that the calcium chloride added WMB compound showed excellent silica dispersion, abrasion resistance, and rolling resistance.
Prussian blue (PB) is known to be an effective material for radioactive cesium adsorption, but its nano-range size make it difficult to be applied for contaminated water remediation. In this study, a simple and versatile approach to immobilize PB in the supporting matrix via surface functionalization was investigated. The commercially available poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) sponge was functionalized by acrylic acid (AA) to change its major functional group from hydroxyl to carboxylic, which provides a stronger ionic bond with PB. The amount of AA added was optimized by evaluating the weight change rate and iron(III) ion adsorption test. The FTIR results revealed the surface functional group changing to a carboxyl group. The surface functionalization enhanced the attachment of PB, which minimized the leaching out of PB. The $Cs^+$ adsorption capacity significantly increased due to surface functionalization from 1.762 to 5.675 mg/g. These findings showed the excellent potential of the PB-PAA-PVA sponge as a cesium adsorbent as well as a versatile approach for various supporting materials containing the hydroxyl functional group.
