Recently much research efforts have focused on how to manage carbon emissions in logistics operations. This paper formulates a model to determine an optimal shipment size with aims to minimize the total cost consisting not only of inventory and transportation costs but also cost for carbon emissions. Unlike the literature assuming carbon emission factors as a given condition, we consider the emission factors as decision variables. It is allowed to make an investment in improving carbon emission factors. The optimal investment decision is shown to be of a threshold type with respect to unit investment costs. Moreover, the findings in this work provide insights on the various elements of the investment decision and their impacts.
The recent interests in securing alternative resource have increased due to environmental issues and exhaustion of natural resources. The government notices production of recycled aggregate using waste concrete as the substitute of the natural aggregate. However, It's important to reduce environmental burden being inevitably made in the process producing recycled aggregate. In this study, the scenarios of transportation distance were set in the transportation phase of production of recycled aggregate. In addition, The possibility of emissions and reduction of carbon dioxide were studied depending on the scenarios. For this study, data about a amount of waste concrete, transportation distance, kind of vehicle, the number of required vehicle, fuel efficiency of vehicle and etc were gathered from 15 companies of intermediate treatment and 60 constructions sites located in Daegu city and Kyungpook area. Based on those data, fuel consumptions and $CO_2$ emissions according to the transportation scheme of waste concrete were calculated. As a result of the study, the emission of carbon dioxide was possible to be reduced by 27.8~75.4% depending on the scenarios of transportation distance.
With recent attempts to improve quality and productivity, the prefabrication manufacturing system has been occupying an increasing share of the construction area. To minimize site work, material is more frequently being produced and partially assembled at a plant, and then installed at a site. For this reason, the production process is being divided and the materials are being delivered to the site after passing through multiple plants. With these changes in the production process, the materials delivery plan is becoming an important management point. In particular, as road transportation using trucks has a 71 percent share of the domestic transportation market, selecting the proper transportation path is important when delivering materials and equipment to a site. But the management system at the project design phase to calculate the delivery cost by considering the production process of the pre-fab material and the $CO_2$ emission at the material delivery phase is currently lacking. This study suggests a process design model for assembly production of the pre-fab material and transportation logistics based on carbon emission. The suggested model can be helpful to optimize the location of the intermediate plant. It is expected to be utilized as a basic model at the project plan and design phase when subcontractors make decisions on items such as materials procurement, selecting the production method, and choosing the location of the assembly plant.

In order to examine the feasibility of Carbon Capture & Sequestration, a major technological strategy for the national goal of greenhouse gas reduction, this paper studies the various methods and corresponding costs for the transportation of $CO_2$ captured at the domestic thermal power plants, as well as performing comparative analysis with overseas CCS demonstration projects. It is predicted that the investment cost would be about 98 million USD when the using land-based pipelines to transport captured $CO_2$ from the thermal power plant located in the south coast. And using marine-based offshore pipelines, it will cost about twice the amount. When the captured $CO_2$ is transported from the power plant in the west coast instead, the cost is expected to increase substantially due to the transportation distance to the storage site being more than double to that of the south coast power plant case.
Recently, the problem of global warming caused by greenhouse gases is getting serious due to the development of industry and the increase in transportation means. Accordingly, the need for a technology to reduce carbon dioxide, which accounts for most of the greenhouse gas, is increasing. Among them, a catalyst for converting carbon dioxide into fuel is being actively studied. Catalysts for reducing carbon dioxide are classified into thermal catalysts and photocatalysts. In particular, the photocatalyst has the advantage that carbon dioxide can be reduced only by irradiating ultraviolet rays at room temperature without high temperature or additional gas. TiO2 is widely used as a photocatalyst because it is non-toxic and has high stability, but has a disadvantage of low carbon dioxide reduction efficiency. To increase the reduction efficiency, 1-propanol was used in the synthesis process. This prevents agglomeration of the catalyst and increases the specific surface area and pores of TiO2, thereby increasing the surface area in contact with carbon dioxide. As a result of measuring the CO2 reduction efficiency, it was confirmed that the efficiency of TiO2 with 1-propanol and TiO2 without 1-propanol was 19% and 12.3%, respectively, and the former showed a 1.5 times improved efficiency.
Interest about Modal Shift is not being decreased, and it is drawing limelight as green logistics which meets low carbon green growth of National development vision. As an effect of Modal Shift, not only reduction in CO2 emission but also reduction in social cost, logistics cost etc. are being discussed. However, until now research about its practical transformation effect has been scanty. In this study, the actual expenses via CO2 emission, social cost, and logistics cost etc. by road transportation and rail transportation of container cargo with Origin/Destination between Busan-Kyeonggi Area were calculated and we propose beneficial effects when transportation mode is transformed from road to rail with Scenario Planning.
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have given rise to climate change which is one of the most serious environmental challenges that the world faces today. In response, Republic of Korea has proposed "Low Carbon, Green Growth" as a new economic paradigm accompanying with the ultimate aim of building a sense of responsibility for the environment. Korean government has set the ambitious national GHG emission reduction target which aims 37% reduction in the business-as-usual (BAU) level of 2030. The transportation sector plays a key role in this target. In the transportation sector, the GHG reduction target of 34.3% in the BAU level by 2020 has been allocated in order to consider the industrial specificity. Furthermore, it is known that the GHG reduction in the transportation sector has relatively minimal side effects compared to those of other sectors. In order to meet this national GHG reduction target, Korean government has set $CO_2$ emission regulation of vehicle for 2020. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the reduction effects by the average GHG regulation of vehicles. $CO_2$ emissions, between 2009 and 2013 were analysed by reduction measure such as technology improvement, light-weight, segment shift, diesel vehicle sales. During this period, $CO_2$ of vehicle was reduced every year by 19.9 g/km (i.e., 3.3% reduction per year). $CO_2$ reduction of imported vehicle is greater than domestic vehicle because of segment shift toward small size vehicle and higher diesel vehicle sales.
The growth rate of international aviation is expected to be higher than that of most industries and the proportion of carbon emissions from the aviation industry will become very significant as the year 2050 approaches. Constraining the growth of this industry is not desirable because it is essential for human welfare as well as the development of related industries. However, reduction of carbon due to aviation is not easy because it is difficult to improve fuel efficiency in a significant way. The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), which is the main organization responsible for handling this problem, developed a program named CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation). The present study analyzes various strategies for countries and airlines to comply with CORSIA using a fuel-efficient system. We conclude that countries should improve their airspace utilization systems, airport facilities, and air navigation systems. Additionally, based on the results of a flight data analysis, airlines should improve their operational efficiency in terms of operations control, flight operation, and maintenance management.
Recently environmental regulations like the Kyoto Protocol, adopted in 1997, required the reduction of the greenhouse gas of 5.2% up to 1990's emissions and 13th General Assembly in 2007, held in Bali of India, have agreed to duty reduction even in developing countries in 2013. Korean government needs research on climate change and greenhouse gas management, such as carbon emissions calculation system and the introduction of greenhouse gas reduction program. Using Top-Down approach with method of IPCC, greenhouse gas emissions from energy, transportation, agriculture, land use and forest, and waste was calculated. Total amount from Shiheung-City in 2007 was about 3,299.581 tons of greenhouse gas $CO_2$. By sectors, the total greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector mostly accounted for 78 percent, 12 percent from transportation, 6 percent of waste, the landuse/forest sector, 4% of the greenhouse gas emissions. Approximately 5,401,618 tons of the greenhouse gas $CO_2$ was total amount from Ansan-City in 2007. The share of energy sector greenhouse gas emissions was the highest portion of 79 % and 14 percent of transportation, 4% from the waste sector, 3 % from landuse/forest sector.
