A study on determining the optimum mixing ratio of carbon source for anaerobic treatment (혐기성처리를 위한 탄소원의 최적 혼합비율 결정에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study were to determine the optimum mixing ratio of sewage sludge and papermill sludge as carbon source required to SRB in treating abandoned mine drainage with natural purification wetland. If mixing sewage sludge/papermill sludge 2.0 SO42- reduced 46.2%, and then 30% in mixing ratio 0.5.Because sewage sludge was faster biodegradability than papermill sludge, effluent SCOD was 40mg/L in mixing ratio 0.5, and after that was all but regular. pH and ORP were almost neutral and -160mV, but after that was all but regular and it indicated that SRB activity was suitable. Fe removal rate was 60% in mixing ratio 2.0, and 54% in mixing ratio 0.5. In point of carbon source supply, It indicated that mixing ration 0.5 was considered as the most appropriate, because degradability of swewage sludge under short time was higher than that of papermill sludge.

Diffusivity of Carbon Dioxide in Concrete (콘크리트 내 이산화탄소 확산계수 예측에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the diffusion coefficients of carbon dioxide for various concrete mixtures. The test results indicate that the diffusion coefficient increases with the increase of water-cement ratio. The diffusion coefficient decreases with the increase of relative humidity at the same water-cement ratio. The diffusion of carbon dioxide reached the steady-state within about five hours after exposure. It was found that the diffusion coefficient of cement paste is larger then that of concrete or mortar. The quantitative values of diffusivity of carbon dioxide in this study will allow more realistic assessment of carbonation depth in concrete structures.

  • Expanded graphite/carbon fiber hybrid conductive polymer composites were fabricated by the preform molding technique. The conductive fillers were mechanically mixed with a phenol resin to provide an electrical property to composites. The conductive filler loading was fixed at 60wt.% to accomplish a high electrical conductivity. Expanded graphites were excellent in forming a conductive networking by direct contacts between them while it was hard to get the high flexural strength over 40MPa with using only expanded graphite and phenol resin. In this study, carbon fibers were added in composites to compensate the weakened flexural strength. The effect of carbon fibers on the mechanical and electrical properties was examined according to the weight ratio of carbon fiber. As the carbon fiber ratio increased, the flexural strength increased until the carbon fiber ratio of 24wt.%, and then decreased afterward. The electrical conductivity gradually decreased as the increase of the carbon fiber ratio. This was attributed to the non-conducting regions generated among the carbon fibers and the reduction of the direct contact areas between expanded graphites.

  • In this work, carbon black(CBs)-embed multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) as conductive fillers for activated carbon(ACs)-based electrodes for supercapacitor were prepared by chemical reduction of oxidized MWNTs and CBs. The effect of CBs-MWNT composites on electrochemical performances of ACs-based electrodes were investigated as a function of CB-MWNT ratio. It was found that CBs-MWNTs composites were formed by the reduction reaction of the functional groups of oxidized MWNTs and CBs. It was resulted in the conjugation of CBs onto the MWNT having high surface area and aspect ratio, leading to the enhanced electrical properties of MWNTs. The electrochemical performances, such as current density, charge-discharge, and specific capacitance of the ACs/CBs-MWNT electrodes were higher than that of ACs/MWNTs and conventional ACs/CB electrodes, which was attributed to the synergistic effect of CBs-MWNTs as a conductive filler.

Physical and Mechanical Properties of Porous Concrete Using Waste Activated Carbon (폐활성탄을 사용한 다공성 콘크리트의 물리.역학적 성질)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of porous concrete using waste activated carbon. Material used were ordinary portland cement, recycled coarse aggregate, waste activated carbon and superplasticizer. The replacement ratios of waste activated carbon were 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, and 10 %. The void ratio was decreased and ultrasonic pulse velocity was increased with increasing the waste activated carbon powder, respectively. The compressive strength and flexural strength of porous concrete using waste activated carbon powder were in the range of 8.21${\sim1}$6.58 MPa and 1.69${\sim1}$3.68 MPa, respectively. The pH degree of porous concrete in 1day and 77days were shown in 12.50${\sim1}$12.63 and 10.21${\sim1}$10.70, respectively. Accordingly, waste activated carbon can be used for porous concrete material.

Effect of Microstructure Change on the Mechanical Properties in Hot-Forged Ultra High Carbon Steel (열간 단조에 의한 고탄소강의 미세조직 변화가 기계적 성질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the hot forging ratio on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ultra high carbon steel. The microstructure of ultra high carbon steel with 1.5%wt.C consisted of a proeutectoid cementite network and acicular microstructure in pearlite matrix. With increasing hot forging ratio, the volume and thickness of the network and acicular proeutectoid cementite decreased. Lamella spacing and the thickness of eutectoid cementite decreased with increasing hot forging raito, and were broken up into particle shapes, which then became spheroidized. When the forging ratio was over 65%, the network and acicula shape of the as-cast state disappeared. With increasing hot forging ratio, hardness, tensile strength, elongation and impact value were not changed up to 50%, and then rapidly increased with the increase of the forging ratio.

A Study of Salmon Oil Type Analysis by FT-IR and Carbon Isotopes Ratio (FT-IR과 탄소동위원소 분석을 통한 연어유의 구분에 관한 연구)

  • This study analyzes the structure types of salmon oil to evaluate the purity of salmon oil products based on the 38 different types of imported salmon oil products distributed in the Republic of Korea. The major types of omega-3 foods in the salmon oil are ethyl ester (EE) and triglyceride (TG). If the salmon oil contained potential contaminants and was processed in order to remove it, EE type omega-3 fatty acids are found in concentration. This provides a good guide in assessing if products were made with EE type ingredients or re-esterified contaminated materials. The results of the FT-IR analysis showed significant difference in the C=O, C-O band positions in TG and EE. There were 19 TG type products and 19 EE type products. The analysis of carbon isotope ratio was performed on the types of TG and EE. There were different properties in the 19 TG type products. In one product, the carbon isotope ratio was -25.15 and the other 18 products showed -22.15~-23.96. The carbon isotope ratio of all 19 EE type products showed -21.91~-23.74. The results of the TLC analysis showed similar results with FR-IR. The re-esterified TG form was not detected in the TG type products, confirming that the TG type products contained natural salmon oil. This study aimed to provide the basic material in classifying the types of natural salmon oil and re-esterified salmon oil, by analyzing the pattern and proportion of FT-IR spectrum, carbon isotope ratio, and TLC.

A Study on the Water Gas Shift Reaction of RPF Syngas (RPF(Refuse plastic fuel) 합성가스의 수성가스 전환 반응 연구)

  • The water-gas shift reaction is the subsequent step using steam for hydrogen enrichment and H2/CO ratio-controlled syngas from gasification. In this study, a water-gas shift reaction was performed using syngas from an RPF gasification system. The water-gas shift using a catalyst was performed in a laboratory-scale tube reactor with a high temperature shift (HTS) and a low temperature shift (LTS). The effects of the reaction temperature, steam/carbon ratio, and flow rate on H2 production and CO conversion were investigated. The operating temperature was 250-400℃ for the HTS system and 190-220℃ for the LTS system. Steam/carbon ratios were between 1.5 and 3.5, and the composition of reactant was CO : 40 vol%, H2 : 25 vol%, and CO2 : 25 vol%. The CO conversion and H2 production increased as the reaction temperature and steam/carbon ratio increased. The CO conversion and H2 production decreased as the flow rate increased due to reduced retention time in the catalyst bed.

Adsorption of Nitrogen Oxides on Manufactured Impregnated Activated Carbon Fibers with Potassium Hydroxide

  • In this paper, impregnated activated carbon fiber (IACF) was manufactured to pitch-based activated carbon fibers (ACF) with potassium hydroxide (KOH) by using wet impregnation method to raise nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) adsorptivity. The properties of IACF were observed using EPMA, TGA and DSC and $NO_x$ adsorptivity was observed at high and low temperature. Before and after adsorption was analyzed using ToF-SIMS for examine surface characterization of adsorbed $NO_x$. The results showed that the better adsorptivity appeared for increasing KOH ratio. So, $NO_x$ adsorptivity showed result that is proportional between KOH and the adsorbed amount. On the other hand, adsorbent that manufactured without washing was better $NO_x$ adsorptivity than adsorbent that manufactured with washing. The behavior of adsorption show that crossing time of NO and $NO_2$ delayed for a rising adsorptivity. And NO ratio increased but $NO_2$ ratio decreased according as KOH ratio increases. $NO_x$ was confirmed through surface analysis that remain in $NO_2^-$ and $NO_3^-$ form on IACF surface.

Chip Forming Characteristics of Bi-S Free Machining Steel (Bi-S 쾌삭강의 칩생성특성)

  • In this study the characteristics of chip formation of the cold drawn Bi-S free machining steels were assessed. And for comparison those of the cold drawn Pb-S free machining steel the hot rolled low carbon steel which has MnS as free machining inclusions and the conventional steels were also investigated. During chip formation the cold drawn free machining steels show relatively little change in thickness and width of chip compare to those of the conventional carbon steels. And a single parameter which indicates the degree of deformation during chip formation chip cross-section area ratio is introduced. The chip cross-section area ratio is defined as chip cross-section area is divided by undeformed chip cross-section area. The variational patters of the chip cross-section area ratio of the materials cut are similar to those of the shear strain values. The shear stress however seems to be dependent on the carbon content of the materials. The cold drawn Bi-S and Pb-S steels show nearly the same chip forming behaviors and the energy consumed during chip formation is almost same. A low carbon steel without free machining aids shows poor chip breakability due to its high ductility. By introducing a small amount of free machining inclusions such as MnS Bi, Pb or merely increasing carbon content the chip breakability improves significantly.
